Tera aana bhi dhokha thhaa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The film “Mere Armaan Mere Sapne” is a 1963 release by Lalit Kala Mandir, Bombay. This film is directed by Arbind Soni. The main star cast includes Pradeep Kumar, Kumari Naaz, Aeem Kumar, Jayshree Gadkar, Sumitra Devi, Pran, Asit Sen, Agha, Manmohan Krishan, Badri Prasad, Padma Devi, Paro Devi, Johnny Whisky, Samar Chatterjee, Pal Mahendra etc.

The following is adapted from the synopsis that has been sent by Arun ji, our in-house encyclopedia of films and film music from yesteryears.

Mere Armaan Mere Sapne (1963) was produced and directed by Arvind Sen – who also wrote the screenplay. The story is by Binoy Chatterjee and dialogues by Vishnu Sharma.

Kumar (Pradeep Kumar) is a brilliant student with a bright future. He is expected to marry Prabha (Jayashri Gadkar), a rich man’s daughter. But suddenly, Kumar’s father (Badri Prasad) passes away. Before passing away he takes a promise from Kumar to look after his younger brother Arun (Ashim kumar). The expected liaison with Prabha does not happen, and we get to know later in the film that Prabha gets married to someone else, a lawyer.

Arun is not interested in studies. He has a romantic fling with Shanti (Naaz). Kumar helps him, Shanti encourages him and he passes his exams with 1st class marks. He is then sent to the city for higher education, but before that he is engaged to Shanti.
Arun joins Kumar’s old college where he meets Vilas (Agha) an old classmate of Kumar. Vilas once saves him from ragging and takes him out to the city streets where Vilas meets Kalpana (Sumitra Devi) who is a society girl. Arun is attracted to her. Kalpana is originally a good girl but gets into clutches of Pran (Pran) and is spoiled. One day, Jogeshwar (Asit Sen) sees Arun with Kalpana. He goes to the village and gives this information to Arun’s mother (Padma Devi), who dies from shock on hearing this. Kumar is also angry and goes to city to meet Arun.
Meanwhile, being a good girl basically, Kalpana throws Arun out of her house. Pran is angry and he murders Kalpana. Kumar reaches there only to find her dead body. He is arrested and tried in court by the Govt. pleader. It turns out that Prabha (Kumar’s old flame) is the wife of the Govt. pleader. Prabha cones to meet Kumar in the lock up, gets to know the complete truth and defends him in the court. Kumar is released, and Pran is arrested by the police. Kumar and Arun return to the village and Arun marries Shanti.

This is another film that has some very memorable songs. One song is already posted on this blog – “Aankhen Hamaari Hon Sapne Tumhaare Hon” . The songs of this film are written by Rajinder Krishan, and the music is by N Dutta. This is a lovely song sung by Rafi Saab – a song of melancholia, of things lost, of love lost, a song of regretful emotions. On screen, this song is presented as a background song, and picturized on Kumari Naaz. From the tone and the setting it appears that the lady has been given a serious jolt by the one she loves. And the song expresses the feelings of disbelief that this has happened.

Enjoy this memorable song, of a sad heart, broken in love.

tera aanaa bhi dhokhaa thaa
tera jaanaa bhi dhokhaa hai
mera dil to na maanegaa
jo in aankhon ne dekha hai

That you came into my life
Seems it was a deception
And that you are gone from my life
Seems like an illusion
This heart, it does not believe
What all these eyes have seen

tujhe paa kar, har ik shay ki tamannaa chhod baitthe thhe
hamen ab ye na samjhaanaa mohabbat ik tamaashaa hai
jo in aankhon ne dekha hai

With your coming into my life
I had lost desire of anything else in life
And now, you try to tell me
That this love of ours was a false show
That these eyes have seen

jo dil mera nahin badlaa, nazar teri bhi kyun badle
magar duniya to kehti hai yahaan aisa bhi hota hai
jo in aankhon ne dekha hai

My heart is still the same
Whyfore your eyes, your glance is different
The world tells me
That is how things happen here
That these eyes see

Sudhir ji,
I have given the film story and other details on 16-1-2012 as comments on the song’ ankhen tumhari ho….’ of this film.
The above song is sung by Shanti(Naaz) when Arun(Ashim kumar) deserts her.

Beautiful song by Rafi. Just like in Dhool Ka Phool (Daaman mein daagh lagaa baithe), N.Dutta has used Rafi, a male singer for a background song picturized on a female. Thanks Sudhirji.

The tune of the song is reminiscent of “Sanam tu bewafaa ke naam se..mashhoor ho jaaye…”

Not only tune, meaning too…

Just my 2 cents’ worth 🙂
