Piya khul ke na nain milaaye re

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Music director N Dutta started his career as an independent composer in 1955. That year, two films were released which have music created by him. The films are ‘Marine Drive’ and ‘Milaap’. The musical scores are very impressive in both these films, and that set the pace for N Dutta’s career in subsequent years. Three songs each from both these films are already represented on this blog. But as I reviewed the remaining songs from this film, there is still a few gems contained in these movies that need to be discussed here. In this post, I present the fourth song from ‘Milaap’, that is listed as the debut film for N Dutta.
Milaap (1955) is a Dev Anand – Geeta Bali starrer, and a film of significant note. Produced under the banner of Filmarts, Bombay by TR Fatehchand, it is directed by Raj Khosla. The main star cast of this film includes Dev Anand, Geeta Bali, KN Singh, Johnny Walker, Krishan Dhawan, Kumkum, Rajender, Uma, Jagdish, Indira, Ambar, Balbir, Kesarbai, Williams, Lily Kerkar, TN Charlie, Uma Devi, Rajan Kapoor, Devikaran etc. The lyrics for this film are penned by Sahir Ludhianvi.
Raj Khosla, having worked with Guru Dutt as an assistant director in memorable films like Baazi (1951), Jaal (1952), Baaz (1953) and Aar Paar (1954), made his debut as a full director in this film. For him, this film did not do any wonders, and he waited another year before his name was acknowledged as a director of repute, with the release of ‘CID’ in 1956. However, for N Dutta, it was a start of a memorable journey. The film boasts of many a wonderful melodies, viz. “Ye Baahaaron Ka Samaa” ), “Bachnaa Zaraa Ye Zamaanaa Hai Buraa”, “Jaate Ho To Jaao Par Jaaoge Kahaan” amongst other.
This song here is another lovely melody that has been rendered so well by Asha Bhonsle. On screen, this song is performed by Geeta Bali, addressing a pesky and mischievous grouse against an un-protesting, but hesitant Dev Anand. The starting music of the song sets a wonderful pace, announcing the arrival of a new sound and a new melody maker on the scene. Coupled with words by Sahir, that are with an intent that is deeper than it appears on a casual listen, this turns out to be a very hummable tune. The line “wohi jiyegaa jo marr jaaye re” is reminiscent of a depth of philosophy ensconced in a playful and naughty expression. Geeta Bali, an actress of a very unique talent, had a capacity to say a thousand things with just a twitch of her eye brows, a tilt of her head and playful smile on her lips. It is a wonder and a treat to watch her express emotions in minutest details, without repeating herself – truly a rare performer.
Enjoy this lovely melody by N Dutta, that will make you sit up and take notice of the emotions being expressed.
piyaa khul ke na nain milaaye re
jiyaa taras taras reh jaaye re
koi kaise isey samjhaaye re
jiyaa taras taras reh jaaye re
(My lover is bashful)
Timidly, he is nervous to let our eyes meet
And yearning persists in my heart
O how do I convey this to him
That a yearning persists in my heart
oodhi ghataa bhi kahe, sard hawaa bhi kahe
kar le tu kahin pyaar ye mausam ki adaa bhi kahe
dil ki sadaa bhi kahe
yoon hi saawan beet na jaaye re
The dark clouds above, the cool breeze
And the flourishes of spring
All say it’s the time to be in love
Even the heart calls out (the same)
Lest this romantic season of rain may pass us by
dil bhi hai pyaar bhi hai, hum hain bahaar bhi hai
thodaa sa teri aankh mein chaahat ka iqraar bhi hai
thodaa inkaar bhi hai
kaahe banti baat gawaaye re
The heart is willing
The love is in blossom
We are here in this lovely ambience
I can see a glimmer of assent in your eyes
And I can see, too, a hesitant nay
Oh why let this budding thought astray
dil mein armaan bhi hai, mausam jawaan bhi hia
zulfon ki ghanee chhaon mein jeene ka samaan bhi hai
marnaa asaan bhi hai
wohi jiyegaa jo marr jaaye re
Longings abound in the heart
The weather is crisp and fresh
All the reasons to be alive
Are in the shades of (my) tresses
The life is unto him
Who is ready to die

Milaap was loosly based on Hollywood movie “Mr. deed goes to town..(1935). With Gary Cooper and here Dev saab…I often compare them 🙂
The par excellence of the song sequence by Raj khosla. He understand the songs better as himself being a classical singer plus having an unparallel working experience from Guru Dutt.
Asha, Sahir, N.Dutta with and wihtout SDB..they have created so many unforgettable melodies.
