Dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
Posted on: February 16, 2012
I S Johar was quite a maverick character in Hindi movies. He tended to make fun movies. His movies were inspired by the British series “Carry on..”. The titles of this movies, that took an irreverent view of things, tended to be along the lines of “Johar in …..”.
This particular movie, which also had Mehmood, was called ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa” (1965) and it was based on the freedom struggle of Goa. Goa, now an integral part of India was a Portuguese colony till 1961 and it became a part of India only after that. This movie takes a light hearted look look at the state of affairs of Goa just before its independence.
Today (16th february) is the birth anniversary of I S Johar. On this occasion, here is this nice song from “Johar Memhmood in Goa” (1965). In this story, I S Johar enters Goa to help the Goans in their freedom struggle. As is the wont of Hindi movie heroes, they can still find spare time to romance and sing romantic songs. And that is what I S Johar is doing in this song. He is seen romancing a pretty Goan belle, viz Sonia Sahni in this song.
This song is sung by Mukesh with his usual Midas touch. This lovely song is written by Qamar Jalalbadi. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.
Lyrics of this song were sewnt to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
kamar na lachke haaye sajaniya
dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
teri bikhri zulfen dekh dekh ye
mast ghata sharmaayee
ho dekho
mast ghata sharmaayee
tera roop jo dekha
jhoom jhoom li
bijli ne angadayee
ho li bijli ne angadayee
kaale baal gora roop
jaise saaye mein ho dhoop
tujhe dekh jiya bharma hi gaya
ho dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
dheere re chalo mori baaki hiraniya
kamar na lachke haaye sajaniya
dheere re chalo mori baaki hiraniya
dheere re chalo mori baaki hiraniya
kyun dil ki raahen chhod chhod ye
phool chala khaaron pe
ye phool chala khaaron pe
tera pighle aise roop ke jaise
mom ho angaaron pe
jaise mom ho angaaron pe
tera mukhda gulaabi
teri chaal sharaabi
mujhe ram kasam
nasha aa hi gaya
ho dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
kamar na lachke haaye sajaniya
dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya
dheere re chalo mori baanki hiraniya

Atul ji,
INDRAJEET S JOHAR or I.S.Johar(16-2-1920 to 10-3-1984) was a multifaceted and an interesting film personality. He was highly qualified with his MA LLB degrees in those days, when such persons were rare in filmdom. He started his career with Ek thi Ladki-1949 and from the begining he paired successfully with another comedian Majnu(Harold Lewis) in several movies.Johar was so carried away with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby pair films that with Mehmood he made some films in the footsteps of ” Road to…” series.(Bob Hope,Bing Crosby and Dorothy leymur acted in 7 Road to…movies, like Road to Singapore,Zanzibar,Bali,Morocco,Utopia,Rio and
Hong kong from 1940 to 1962).
Johar had married 5 times. His first wife was the(now) famous fitness expert Rama Bans, whom he married in 1943 when she was only 16 years. His 3rd wife was Sonia Sahni. His daughter Ambika Soni also was an actress.
Johar was a prolific writer and wrote many s/plays He directed 12 films.Today’s successful Director Yash Chopra was once his asst.Director.
He also acted in 5 Hollywood movies and one TV series.

I was a regular reader of his ‘Question Box’ in Filmfare where he used to give very witty replies.
I thought that his full name was Inder Sen Johar. I may be wrong.
Ambika Soni?? or Ambika Johar?

Thank you Arunji for the detail info on Johar Saab. I saw him in “Goonj Uthi Sehnai” on Doordarshan when I was a kid. So, I took his identity as a bad person. Lekin baad me doosri movies dekhane ke baad pata chala ki “aadmi bura nahi hai dil ka” 🙂

Kamath ji,
Sorry,it was a slip on my part.
The name of his daughter should be AMBIKA JOHAR and not Soni.
And,his name was INDRAJEET SEN JOHAR,but in filmy style it became Inder sen Johar.

IS Johar was indeed a very interesting person, from what I remember from my younger days. He always seemed to have an opinion – and never seemed to shy away from expressing it. 🙂 And it was often not a politically-correct one, so he would sometimes get into trouble.
I remember he had run-ins with the IT Dept also – and used to bring this up in his films. 🙂 And then, in the early 1970s, he made a spoof called “5 Rifles” when he worked with star look-alikes! (it had that famous song “jhoom barabar jhoom sharaabi”).
All in all, quite a character!!! Did not realise it is his birth anniversary today. Well done, Atul, to put up a song on the occasion.
And the song! I remember this song very well – and the movie too. It was quite a (surprise?) hit – and had other hit songs like “ye do deewaane dil ke” and “ankhiyon ka noor hai tu”.
IS Johar’s pairing with Sonia Sahni was popular in that generation, much like Dara Singh and Mumtaz. 😉 The movies may have been B-movies but they had their following. Johar’s wit (he almost always had a riposte for every situation) was legendary. His movies used to be full of one-liners. 🙂
I’ve seen some of those “Road to..” movies that Arunji talks about. Timepass movies – and now that Arunji mentions it, I can see that Johar was probably inspired by them.
Arunji mentions Majnu (Harold Lewis). I think I’ve very vaguely heard of him. Maybe Arunji can throw some more light on him? Would be great to know. Thanks in advance, Arunji. 🙂

Raja ji,
MAJNU-Harold Lewis was a punjabi christian. He was the childhood friend of Roop K.Shorey.When Shorey wanted to make his second film,he chose Harold as a Hero. The film was MAJNU-1935,which was a satirical spoof on the old Laila-Majnu story. There were many stunts and in one scene Majnu is tied up on railway track by the villain. The film became a hit and Harold was renamed MANJU for his film career. He appeared inalmost all of Shorey’s films.he was also doing films with other producers. In 1942 he did a double role in Nishani and in 1943 he directed his first film Paapi.Shorey also gave him a film Badnami-1946 for direction and it was here that Majnu met I.S.Johar who wrote the story and Dialogues of Badnami.
majnu paired with I.S.Johar in EK THI LADKI-1949,the debut film of Johar.Later they made a comedy pair in 10 films, including the hit HUM SAB CHOR HAIN-1956.
Majnu acted in about 50 films, from 1935 to 1966 film Akalmand-also with Johar for the last time.
Majnu directed 10 films including,Paapi-43,Badnami-46,Son of Alibaba-55,Tatar ka chor-55 baghi sardar-56,Chandu-58 etc.

Wow, that’s an interesting background! Thank you very much.
I always like to read about people who lived and acted pre-1950 because they must have gone through the experience of the partition – I believe many careers got redefined due to the partition (many artistes migrated from the Indian film industry to newly-formed Pakistan, either rightaway or over a period of time after partition – like Noor Jehan and Meena Shorey).
Actually this is a totally different subject – and quite fascinating in itself. Would be wonderful if you could elaborate more on this subject, Arunji.

Also, to add to the comment above, I went back to an old post here where we did talk about Majnu. He is in this absolutely delightful song and was identified then by Arunji. If he has indeed acted in 50-odd movies (from 1935-1966), imdb is shocking in its filmography on him. It has just a few films mentioned. I myself remember seeing him in quite a few films.
Am now going to request memsaab to put his picture up in the artist gallery based on this Dholak song (unless she has a better pic somewhere).

Raja ji,
IMDB is not a site I would believe as they are notoriously famous for incomplete or wrong info.I know of one case where they declared a living actress as dead. They even gave the date of her death.
if you see any of the reviews they provide for some films, they are either incomplete or they focus on unimportant aspect of the film.
It is realy frustrating that internet movie sites are of not much use.instead, blogs on specific issues are much better for info.
As far as majnu’s list of movies is concerned,I can provide the list to interested persons anytime required.

Kalyanji and Mukesh were two of a kind. They had a very close knit bond between them. K-A did not restrict Mukesh to Raj Kapoor and Manoj Kumar but used him on verious heroes. Mukesh did most songs with K-A than with others.
Inder Sen Johar was married four times. Sonia Sahani was his third wife.
Sonia Sahani played as a mother of Rishi Kapoor in ‘Bobby’. (Actually .Sadhana was offered for that role).
I saw this movie becouse of this song.
