Dilwaale dilgeer huaa

This article is written by Khyati Bhatt, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Yatrik, a vintage film was made in 1952. I had heard so many times, so many good things about this movie from my mother, when I was a little kid. But, was never too much interested in old movies mainly because they had too many songs. Because of the age & my limited “soch” to understand the depth of these songs, I never paid any attention either to watch any movies on Doordarshan or to listen to those songs on radio.

Every Sunday, I had to ask my father if I could watch the hindi movie on TV. His first question was “Which movie?” . By the name of the movie, he would know if it is of K.L.Saigal, Pankaj Malik, P.C.Barua, Sohrab Modi, Ashok Kumar. In that case, he would agree to let me watch that movie. As I mentioned, not too much interested in those movies, I would still watch the movie at least halfway, just because I had a craze of watching hindi movies from very young age and it was free 🙂 .

I remember one day, while my cousin was watching Zanjeer on DD and my father just saw the glimpse of a part where Amitabh Bhachchan was showing Jaya Bhaduri all dead bodies of children who were killed in the truck accident. OMG! That was the turning point in my life! After watching AB’s acting, he called me and gave me the permission to watch rest of the movie. I believed him only after my mother told me to go and watch. I am very thankful to Amitji for his acting in Zanjeer 🙂 . That movie not only changed his life, but mine too 🙂 . And then Amitabh Bachchan was added in my father’s list of nice/decent actors.

My two uncles (in-laws) were radio artists on Rajkot (Gujarat) Radio Station. It was during this time(after my engagement) that I was exposed to more of these songs, as one of them was a big fan of K.L.Saigal. Can’t forget those days when the entire family (almost 30 to 40 people) would just sit and sing these songs of Saigal and Pankaj Malik whole night with just two or three lanterns and that also in our farm. The environment created by the impact of his voice with harmonium and tabla played by his son on this stary night was so peaceful. Mumbai mein to is ka sapna bhi nahi dekh sakte thhe. This was my second phase in which I started loving these GEMS as now I could understand depth of the song & the love and passion of those singers and music directors.

After leaving India with just few audio cassettes, again forgot these songs. Then the era of technology! CDs, videos and now dvds and above all, internet and You Tube. I don’t have any words to express my gratitude to all those, who posts these songs on YT and many other websites. For us, NRI’s, with only few Indian Channels, internet is the only source to enjoy the beauty of hindi cine songs with the detail info.

This movie, “Yatrik” is the Hindi version of the Bengali film “Mahaprasthaner Pathey” which was adopted from a novel by the same name and written by Prabodh Kumar Sanyal. Hindi version was produced by New Theatres, Calcutta and was directed by Kartik Chatterjee. Cast includes Vasant Choudhury, Abhi Bhattacharya, Arundhati Mukherjee, Manorama, Tulsi Chakrabarti. All songs of this movie are composed by Pankaj Malik. Info on the various sites mentions Pandit Bhushan and B.M.Sharma as the two lyricists of songs in this movie with credit given to Pandit Bhushan for this particular song. Dhananjay Bhattacharya is the singer of this song whose voice sounds like Pankaj Malik. Here is a philosophical song to remember a great artist, composer and singer, Pankaj Malik on Jan 19th, his 34th death anniversary.

Song-Dilwaale dilgeer huaa (Yatrik)(1952) Singer-Dhananjay Bhattacharya, Lyrics-Pandit Chand, MD-Pankaj Mullick

Lyrics

oo oo oo
dilwale
dilgeer hua
aa aa aa
kya kya soch raha
hai ae ae tu
dilwale
dilgeer hua kya
soch raha hai tu
soch raha hai tu
sukh aur dukh ko samajh baraabar
dheeraj tu dheeraj dhar sadhu
kyun soch raha
kyun soch raha
kya soch raha hai tu
dilwaale
dilgeer hua kya
soch raha hai tu

khoti duniya bhale burey ki
kar na sake pehchhan
gyaanwan par keech uchhale
moorakh ko de maan
moorakh ko de maan
tu apmaan ko maan samajhkar
ponchh daal aansoo
kyun soch raha
kyun soch raha
kya soch raha hai tu
dilwaale
dilgeer hua kya
soch raha hai tu

hansi khushi aur
rona dhona
jag ke jhoothhe khel
jag ke jhoothhe khel
tan man mein jo basa hai
tan man mein jo basa hai
sabke badha tu us se mel
badha ke us se mel
sadhu man par paa kaaboo
sadhu man par paa kaaboo
kyun soch raha
kyun soch raha
kya soch raha hai tu
kya soch raha hai tu

Dhananjay Bhattacharya is in the tradition of ditto copies (of Pankaj Mallik), just as Subir Sen and Dwijen Bhattacharya are of Hemant Kumar. YouTube, typical of their unintelligence, have removed the video version. I am surprised at their attitude, because music lovers like us, who have no commercilal interests, only popularise their channel and those songs. But audio is good enough. Thanks.

Khyati ji,
I can not express in words my joy to see a song from Yatrik-52,being posted here.
Yatrik film is very close to my heart and I shall never-never forget this film in my life.I not only loved this film but also I have some songs of this film in my possession, sung by Pankaj Mullick.
This was one film which showed important places of worship, sacred to Hindus and I remember my parents taking my grandparents and many other aged, old members of the family to this film to make a filmi ‘Yatra’ of sacred places which they were wanting but could not visit.
As you have mentioned, this was based on the travelogue of PKSanyal when he went on a search for Truth in the Himalayas. The screenlpay, story and dialogues were done by he himself. Two versions, one Bengali and one Hindi were made. The Bengali version had Arundhati devi, making her film debut as Rani-a widow on a pilgrimage, whereas in the Hindi version it was Abhi Bhattacharya,as Bramhachari ji from Haridwar, making the pilgrimage.
He sees Setubandh, dwarka,Ajanta and Konark. Now he is on a tour of Himalayas,Badrinatn, kedarnath,Amarnath,Manasarovar, dev prayag and Hrishikesh.
In his travel,he meets several characters, like a band of Terrorists from Midanapore,Aghornath,Radha rani and her mother etc.he has an argument with Aghornath, because being a prostitutes,Radha Rani is denied entry to temples by him.
Later,Bhatta. is lost in Himalayas and a mysterious Bhill girl Rani appears and guides him to safety and disappears.
The scenes of Himalayas and and the background singing of Punkaj Mullick are etched on my mind.
In this film,Pankaj babu sings “Astyutarasyam dishi devtatma…..” in a chorus. This is written by Kalidas in the praise of Himalayas, and appears in the begining part of his drama “Kumarsambhavam’.It is simply divine. With the background of kedarnath,Pankaj babu again sings a stuti or a stotra of lord Shankar,”Hey chandrachud madanantak shoolpani…” another gem. Then there are some more Shiv stotras,Aratis and other devotional songs.
Thanks once again for giving me the sweet memories.

Arunji,
Thanks for those kind words and the detail info about Bengali and Hindi versions of this movie. I was about to post the Hey Chandrachud madanantak shoolpani , Shiva Naamavali Ashtakam on PM’s b’day combining with Maha Shivaratri on Feb 20th. But I thought that I won’t be able to justify writing Sanskrit slokas in English. You are lucky to have all those songs in your collection. I just have two songs from this movie on my CD of PM. As I have mentioned in my post, I have heard all of its songs from my uncle-in-law. Like you said, all prayers, bhajans, songs of this movie are true gems, my fav being Ram naam Ghanshyam & Tu dhoondhata hai jisko. During our visit to India in 2010, we as a family did this Chaardhaam Yatra in 12 days. My father told me that my uncle did this Chaardhaam Yatra somewhere in late 1940s with my aunt and another brother and it took them almost two months for a round trip from Bombay as there were no developed roads or any means of transportation during that time. So, while writing about this post, I was thinking that how this New Theatre have managed taking the whole unit to this area with limited resources of transportation. That’s why I salute to their love, devotion, dedication, to their work. How perfectionist they were! Without any help of digital technology, they did the best job.

Thanks for the reminder. Yes I have it on my list to start posting Pankaj Mullick songs again. Got rolled up into some posting activity for the past few weeks. Let me plan to re-start that set of songs also.
Hopefully soon. 🙂
