Chaandni aayi ban ke pyaar o saajna

Posted on: February 20, 2012

“Dulaari” (1949) is a movie which is today fondly remembered as the movie that helped Rafi break into the big league with the song Suhaani raat dhal chuki. Till then, Rafi’s style of singing had few takers in the Hindi movie music and with this movie it became the new style of singing. It was a paradigm shift which few people at that time may have realised. In fact the management term “Paradigm Shift” itself was not coined at that time.

“Dulaari” (1949) had several other nice and memorable songs in it. As many as six songs from this movie have already been discussed in this blog.

Here is yet another song from this movie. Music lovers will automatically categorise this song as a “How come this song was not discussed earlier” category song. 🙂

This song is sung by Shamshad Begam and it is picturised on Geeta Bali. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and Naushad comosed the music.

Listening to this song and after going through the list of songs in this movie, one wonders how one movie can have so many timeless classics in it. And when one takes a look at the other movies of the era, the same thought crosses the mind for their music as well. It was an era that was buzzing with creativity, no doubt about that.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Chaandni aayi ban ke pyaar o saajna(Dulaari)(1949) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

chaandni aayi ban ke pyaar
o saajna
o saajna
chaandni aayi ban ke pyaar
o saajna
o saajna
laagi mere dil par kataar
o saajna
o saajna
laagi mere dil par kataar
o saajna
o saajna

jeewan mein preet na ho
ye bhi hai reet koyi
ee ee
ye bhi hai reet koyi
dekho ji mere bina
gaana na geet koyi
dekho ji mere bina
gaana na geet koyi
gaana na geet koyi
toot na jaayen dil ke taar
o saajna
o saajna
laagi mere dil par kataar
o saajna
o saajna

bedardi sainyyan
mujh dukhiya ki laaj rahe
dukhiya ki laaj rahe
kehne ki baat nahin
ab tum se kaun kahe
kehne ki baat nahin
ab tum se kaun kahe
ab tum se kaun kahe
sun lo mere dil ki pukaar
o saajna
o saajna
laagi mere dil par kataar
o saajna
o saajna

ankhiyaan mila ke zara
ulfat kaa rang bharo
ulfat kaa rang bharo
mere ban jaaoge tum
is ka iqraar karo
mere ban jaaoge tum
is ka iqraar karo
is ka iqraar karo
aata nahin dil baar baar
o saajna
o saajna
laagi mere dil par kataar
o saajna
o saajna
chandni aayi ban ke pyaar
o saajna
o saajna

One of my favourite Shamshad begum songs. The opening prelude is out-of-this-world. Only a maestro like Naushad could be behind it. Awesome.

Atul ji,
Thanks for posting this evergreen song, which is one of my favourites.
Like you,I too many times wonder how can one film have so many fantastic songs, and above that-how can there be so many films with lots of good songs in them ? Perhaps, due to all such films the period 45 to 65 is the ‘fasl-e-bahar’ of hindi film music.
BTW,I have given the synopsis of Dulari film on 30-1-12,as comment on ‘Aankhon mein aa jaa..’
