“Deccan Queen” (1936) is a very old movie that was released in the early formative days of Hindi talkies. This movie had Surendra and Aruna Devi in lead roles.
Here is a song from this movie. Only the audio of this song is available. Seeing that this song is sung by Surendra, it is obvious that the song is picturised on him as well.
Zia Sarhadi is the lyricist. Music was composed by Pransukhlal Nayak, though youtube link mentions the music director as Ashok Ghosh. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie as well as on the music director of this movie.

Lala Niranjan mal is a very wealthy person.When he dies,his croocked trustees make a plan to swallow his large estate,instead of giving it to his 2 heirs.His daughter Aruna(Aruna Devi) is imlicated falsely in a crime and she goes to jail.His only son is given such medicine that he becomes mad and wanders away far off.
When Aruna comes out of Jail,she decided to take revenge and becomes a dreaded criminal,who is called Deccan Queen,because she is too fast to be caught by the police.Inspector Suresh (Surendra) is appointed specially to catch Deccan queen.Once he meets Vrinda (Aruna Devi) a clerk in an Insurance company and they fall in love.
Impressed by his daring personality and nature,even Deccan queen falls in love with Suresh.By a coincidence it becomes apparent that Vrinda and Deccan Queen look alike.suresh plans to use this to catch DQ,but she is one step ahead.DQ kidnaps vrinda and replaces herself in her role.Then she forces Suresh to get married to her immediately.
Suresh gets a suspician,and with the help of a friend(Bhudo Advani),confirms that she is DQ.
Before Suresh arrests DQ,she runs away and uses Vrinda for a safe passage to safety.Suresh meets her and promises to help her punish the trustees who betrayed her.vrinda is released.
Vrinda and Suresh make a plan and get the trustees to confess.
They are sent to jail and DQ disappears stating that she will find out her brother.
Suresh and vrinda get married.

Thnx a lot. Surendra might have been called “Saigal of Bombay” but he lacked the quality of Saigal. Surendra’s voice ws flat. He didnt have depth

Thanks for ending the week with the 3rd movie of the 30s.
DECCAN QUEEN -1936 was a landmark movie,for it was the FIRST stunt film from Sagar Movietone.
It was the FIRST film of actor Surendra.
It was also the FIRST film where Surendra sang his first song in a film.
It was also the FIRST and the only stunt film of director Mehboob.
Above all,it was the FIRST film having a DOUBLE ROLE.
The Music Director of the film was Prransukh M. Nayak,a wellknown composer of the 30s.
The background music of the film was by Ashok Ghosh.
Pransukh Nayak hailed from Gujrat and was into the Gujrat dramas.He started his Music career with MADHURI-1932 which became the FIRST hindi film in which a Record was made for commercial selling.There were 2 records of 78 RPM,for 4 songs,all sung by Vinayak rao Patwardhan .
Pransukh Nayak gave music to 24 films in his career.some of his films were bharati Mata,madhuri,Daku ki Ladki,Do rangi Duniya,devki,Bambai ki billi,Do deewane,jeevan Lata,Kulvadhu etc.
The above song is Surendra’s debut song.

It was also the first film for which Zia Sarhadi wrote songs. So this film has a flurry of firsts.He was a friend of Mehboob, the director of Daccan Queen and was summoned by him from Peshawar to write songs for this film. I think he also wrote screenplay for the film and played a small role as well. He deserves to be considered as one of the eminent lyricists of his times but has been so far ignored for no reason or rhyme. May be his contribution as a lyricist did not get due recognition because he is better known as a director of films like Hum Log and Footpath. He married the daughter of the singer and music director Rafique Ghaznavi and went to Pakistan after partition where he had to suffer at the hands of military dictator Zia-ur-rehman and had to die in exile. He was not very active in IPTA but always felt proud of being an independent Marxist.
