Gunaahon ka diyaa thha haq

Posted on: March 5, 2012

“Ye Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke” (1963) was based on a real life story, but the Indian censors, movie makers as well as the Indian audience were not matured enough to deal with the subjet. As a result, the topic got diluted, trivialised and sensdanalised to such an extent that the end product was no longer a faithful representation of the case that this movie was based on. In any case, the movie makers had their disclaimer ready (just in case) that their story bore no resemblence to any persons or incidents.

The movie failed at the box office, and that was only to be expected seeing that the above mentioned parties worked overtime to contributed to its downfall. The storyline was made quite tame by the maovie makers, and the censors on their part awarded an A certificate to the already watered down movie. And when it came to Indian audience, they were not ready for watching A certificate movie then, and in fact Indian audience of even today are not yet ready to watch A certificate movies even today. Till date it is belived that A certificate movies equate titillation and vulgarity. The fact that A certificate means storyline dealing with topics for mature minds which may not necessarily mean showing nudism etc in lost on censors and movie watchers alike. And it is a big shame really because the kind of movie watchers who get attracted to the movie halls for an A certificate movie are not the target audience for whom such movies are meant.

The movie itself was a well made movie within its constraints. and the music of this movie was quite good, but it did not quite get the attention that it deserved.

Here is a song from this movie. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it was picturised on Leela Naidu as the movie opening song while credits roll on the screen.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and music is composed by Ravi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Gunaahon ka diya thha haq (Ye Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke) (1963) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

Gunaahon ka diya tha haq
to pachthaane ka haq de de
mujhe apne kiye pe
aap sharmaane ka haq de de
jo thokar khaa chukaa ho
usko thukraane se kya haasil
agar girne ka haq tha phir
sambhal jaane ka haq de de

rooh khatm ho gayee
dil tabaah ho gaya
doosre se rok le
ek gunaah ho gaya
rooh khatm ho gayee
dil tabaah ho gaya
doosre se rok le
ek gunaah ho gaya

raaste na band kar
ek gunaahgaar ke
raaste na band kar
ek gunaahgaar ke
chun sake to ashq chun
ek sharmsaar ke
jalke apni aag mein
dil siyaah ho gaya
doosre se rok le
ek gunaah ho gaya
rooh khatm ho gayee
dil tabaah ho gaya
doosre se rok le
ek gunaah ho gaya

aftaab ke khuda
roshni ke bheekh de
aaftaab ke khuda
roshni ke bheekh de
mar chuki hoon
ek nayee zindagi ke bheekh de
ab karam bhi kar sitam

bepanaah ho gaya
doosre se rok le
ek gunaah ho gaya
rooh khatm ho gayee
dil tabaah ho gayaa
doosre se rok le
ek gunaah ho gaya
rooh khatam ho gayee

As I mentioned in my earlier comment about this movie, it was the idiotic censors and our immature moviegoers who successfully murdered this well made film. Yes, I agree that some changes were made from the real life story. The protagonist in the movie’s an airline pilot, while Nanavati was a high ranking officer in the Indian Navy. The playboy was killed by Nanavati himself. In the movie, to preserve the hero’s ‘purity’, the murderess is Shashikala, the playboy’s jilted lover. In real life, Nanavati was given a President’s pardon after which he, his wife and two sons migrated to Canada. In the movie, Sunil Dutt is acquited of the murder, but it’s too late. Leela Naidu, his wife, dies in her arms. But as I said, the censors and the moviegoers killed this otherwise good movie….

Menon ji,
The changes made in the film, took away all the drama and sensation of the true incident-already known to all educated people-away and reduced the film only to a routine’ run of the mill’ movie. It handed over a big disappoint to the viewers’ expectations resulting in a rejection.
I feel that even if the real incident had not happened and this film was made,as it was made now,it would have failed, as it did not have anything to pull the crowds.
Commander Nanavati was a Hero in the eyes of the people, upholding the culture of India and had punished the person who tried to crush Indian Values. In the movie, none of this happened.
The film had unjustifyably bloated the viewer’s expectations by sensational ads in the papers, filmfare and Screen mentioning that
the film was based on the Nanavati case, albeit subtlely. They even arranged such misleading reviews. All this became the film’s nemesis.
This is my opinion.
