Life is often likened to a journey in Hindi movie songs. This is one comparison that I find quite appropriate. In fact, many other activities during our lifetimes can also be likened to a journey. For instance, this blog is indeed much like a journey. I have often described it as a musical bandwagon that is going on and on, adding fellow passengers on the way and passing milestones after milestones.
Today we arrive at yet another milestone. Yes, this song marks the 5600th song of the blog.
These century songs give us an opportunity to do some introspection and indulge in some low key celebration after which we are once again off to our next milestone, which typically arrives about two weeks later.
There are a few words/ phrases that I am very fond of repeating quite often. One such phrase is “labour of love”. In my experience, I have found that love of any kind, including “labour of love” is an enormous source of energy, and it can keep you going on and on. And indeed this small and innocuous looking phrase is the source of energy that is driving this blog on and on.
During this journey, we have added some wonderful fellow travellers who share the same passion , commitment and values. We in this blog respect, appreciate and recognise the contributions made by all the contributors though various means. We all “follow 4 principles of Ethics, Honesty, Involvement and Devotion” (to paraphrase Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our respected inhouse encyclopaedia).
In this blog, we do not treat songs as FMCG. We treat each song as a work of art, which it definitely is. We listen to the songs to get the lyrics right, we discuss the picturisation of the song (if video is available), and we discuss background information about the songs. During the discussion, we come across information that was not known to us before. In fact, people now visit the blog not just for the songs and the lyrics, but also for the comments !
That is not all. It gave me goosebumps when Memsaab, whom we all respect highly, commented that she has taken elaborate notes based on Sudhir jee’s translations of songs and she refers to it often to try and understand Hindi words/phrases. It is voluntary praises like this that make our day. Of course I am basking in reflected glory, but I am sure Sudhir jee is magnanimous enough to allow us to bask in what is largely his contribution in making Hindi songs lyrics understandable to non Hindi speakers.
With time, we have notched up some impressive feats. The blog now contains all the K L Saigal songs (filmy as well as NFS). We are nearly one third to halfway there in case of a few artists like S D Burman, Naushad, Roshan, O P Nayyar, Mukesh, Madan Mohan etc. It is a matter of time when we will have all the known compositions of these and many other artists.
But this blog is not about quantity. It is about quality. We will not have songs in the blog for the sake of formality. We have songs in this blog because those songs belong here. We are not interested in posting songs indiscriminately treating them as FMCG insted of as works of art. I recently consulted the regulars of this blog and they all overwhelmingly came out in support of values and standards that we have set for ourselves. ”

We want to drink in from the ocean of gems, sip by sip. 6-8 songs a day is just fine. We enjoy every sip, we discuss every sip. We could easily gulp down the whole glass but we wouldn’t taste or enjoy anything, would we? This is not a competition of amassing songs in the quickest possible time, this is an experience of enjoying the journey.
Indeed I could not have said it better.
During this long and fruitful journey, I have had quite an enjoyable time in the company of the fellow travellers. During the journey, we discussed well known songs, as well as rediscovered forgotten gems. In fact, we dug up a few songs that were considered extinct !
The 5600th song is a very special song. Its farmaish was given by Mr arunkumar Deshmukh. Here is what he had to say about this song :-

Very few sustain the rigours of struggle and make it,while 99.9% go back from where they came, disillusioned. That is why there are “ONE FILM” wonders in the categories of Producers,Directors,Actors,singers and Music Directors in addition to many other categories like Technical etc.….one such song from a film, in which the Music Director,Lyricist,Story writer, Screenplay writer, Dialogue writer, the Production House and the Singer were all ONE TIME performers in Hindi films. None of them ever featured in any other Hindi film thereafter.
This song is sung by Ashalata Kulkarni. Pal Jaykumar is the lyricist and music is composed by Sami Manik.
I am not aware about the actress on whom this song is picturised. Going by the trend of involvement of one timers, I will not be surprised if the actress too was a one time wonder in Hindi movies :).
On this occasion, I once again thank all the supporters and well wishers of this blog for their continued support. I hope that this musical journey will go on and on and we will achieve many more milestones on the way.

Thank you for selecting this song which was unique,in the sense that so many people were FIRST AND LAST TIMERS in hindi films from this one film.
Before I discuss the film,here are my random thoughts about this Blog.
I first visited this blog sometime around the last part of 2009,and then became a regular observer and reader of the comments,enjoying the songs posted etc from the second half of 2010.
what I liked about this Blog was that it was run with some noble purpose and the contributors seemed to be devoted to the Blog.I fell in its love and decided to stick here .
Over a period,I realised that certain norms,unwritten rules,ethics and hard work was the hallmark of the blog.This suited me fine as I am a disciplined person myself.
I feel that now I am a part of this Blog.I like the way songs are enjoyed,Lyrics are paid full attention and every contributor doing his bit very dutifully,with respect to the rules and traditions of this blog.
one major difference between this Blog and ALL other Blogs is the love,affection,devotion and involvement which is apparent in every contributor.
This is all because Atul ji has always respected everybody,tried to give credit where it was due and encourage people.thats how this has become a great caravan of Music Lovers.

The story of the film was a run of the mill story.
There is an international gang of gold smugglers,which is disturbing the country’s economy.A special cellis opened to trace and end the ring and Insp.Ramesh is the Chief.He resembles smuggler Ramesh.Taking advantage of this and with the help of his asst. Mary he reaches a Timber Factory where Dr.Mukherji and Col.Williams run the smuggling under a guise of Timber business.Ramesh falls in love with Sheela,d/o Dr.Mukherjee.Lily,the dancer also falls in his love.
Suddenly,Sheela and the doctor disappear and Ramesh is caught.he is kept in a cell,to be killed soon,but Lily rescues him. With additional force from the police Ramesh exposes,Col.Williams as the Gang leader,who has also kept Sheela and the Doctor as hostages and thus the entire gang is busted.
The singer of this song hailed from Hyderabad-AP.she was a classical singer of local repute in Hyderabad.In one of her programmes in Hyderabad,one Dr.Madhusudan heard the singing of Ashalata Kulkarni and he offered her 2 songs in the Telugu film ‘Saduvukunna Ammayeelu (girls who are learning),which he was producing/Directing.her songs became popular and she got many more offers in Telugu films.She sang in her only Hindi film,”Mujrim Kaun”.Although there were 7 songs in the film,only 1 record came out having 1 solo and 1 duet of Ashalata Kulkarni.
later she devoted herself to the classical music,earning a Doctorate.She got married and presently lives in Aurangabad(Maha.) running a Music Academi.

The actress in “Main hoon albeli” is RAJASREE, a popular Tamil and Telugu heroine of the 60s who has acted opposite MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, NT Ramarao and Nageswara Rao.
Hey y’all! Don’t you remember Shashi Kapoor’s heroine in Pyar Kiye Jaa? Surely you can’t forget Phool ban jaaoonga shart ye hai magar! It was the same Rajasree.
She is settled in Chennai and attends star shows now and then.

Dear Atulji,
Hearty Congratulations to you and your dedicated encyclopedic team. First we must thank Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh for his prodigious investigative talent in coming up invariably with such information which never fails to overwhelm us, whether it be from 30’s or 40’s. Let us all doff our hats off to him. Let us hope he will come up with more and more gems from the ocean of memories and nostalgia and regale us for many years to come. His contributions ne chaar chand lagaa diye hain.
As rightly pointed out we need to do more in the field of NFS in respect of Mukesh, Rafi, Asha and Lata to begin with. Further some of MDs, lyricists and singers have yet to make the grade; we need to include them in our cart.
We have a long way to go. However the journey is more enchanting then the destination. Let us enjoy the temporary padavs in our musical odyssey.
Congratulations to all our contributors who made our day everyday and without whom this blog would not be what it is.

Greetings all, and congratulations – slowly but steadily, the marker flagpole is getting higher.
Atul ji,
I thought I was away from the blog and the comments for just four five days. And just as I turn back and check, wow, one more century of songs is posted. I have been tied down with personal matters for some days, and so was not in the groove with my contributions. Hope to make up in the coming week or so :).
The achievements on this blog are no doubt a sum total of the contributions by many wonderful friends. However, I continue to marvel at and salute the tenacious commitment and consistency with which Atul ji is driving this effort. If ‘Labor of Love’ is one phrase we love to use on this blog, the other that I prefer to repeat is ‘a yeoman’s service’ with reference to Atul ji’s single minded devotion to this effort.
And I repeat myself, but still I must say it,

I am following this blog since last three months ,and I must admit that this is the best blog I have come across in last few years . What a dedication, and what a wealth of wonderful information ! I am writing a book on Hindi film music ,and must confess that this blog has not only immensly helpful to me but also changed the design of the book ,for better.I specially thank Atulji and Mr. Arun kumar Deshmukh .

I’m a little late here, but I should say Atul that my by-now-quite-large “dictionary” of Urdu/Hindi to English has been influenced by just about everyone here, not just Sudhir ji (although I think his translations of Urdu are particularly elegant). Indeed all of you should be proud of this wonderful resource for any lover of Hindi cinema and its music 🙂

Many congratulations Atul, first of all to you for making all this happen. Next to the wonderful people who stand by and help out so greatly with precious comments.
This song reminds me of ‘Main Albeli’ from Zubeidaa which the protogonist of the film (her son) watches repeatedly to get a sense of his long dead mother who did only that one song. This song is really very rare, and so good too.
