Bedardi mere sainyya

Posted on: March 9, 2012

The mention of the title “Chaudhvin Ka chaand” (1960) is enough for one to recall the title song of this movie which I was aware of for as long as I can remember. That is how popular this song was. Let me hasten to add that I was not born when this movie and its songs were released, but I recall hearing this song in late 1960s. Other songs of this movie were also popular , but unlike the above mentioned song, they did not contain the title, so I was not aware that they also belonged to the same movie.

The songs of this movie were extremely popular and Ravi in fact was nominated for the Filmfare award for best music for this movie. He lost out winning the award. The award that year went to Shankar Jaikishan for “Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraayi” (1960). If this movie could beat off the challenges of musical blockbusters like “Chaudhvin Ka Chaand”, “Mughal e Azam”, “Kohinoor”, “Barsaat Ki Raat”, “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai” , “Kala Baazaar”,”Usne Kahaa Thha”, “Bambai Ka Babu” etc then the music of that music must have been really special, as far as the music lovers of that time were concerned.

When it came to “Chaudhvin Ka Chaand”, the movie did win the award for best lyricist (Shakeel Badayuni) and the best male playback singer (Rafi) for the title song.

I have discussed as many as seven songs from “Chaudhvin Ka Chaand” (1960). Here is the eight song from the movie.

This song is a mujra song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Minu Mumtaz. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and music is composed by Ravi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Bedardi mere sainyya shabnam hain kabhi shole (Chaudhvin Ka Chaand)(1960) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

aa aa aa aa aa aa aa aa

bedardi mere saiyaan
shabnam hain kabhi shole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
bedardi mere saiyaan
shabnam hain kabhi shole
bedardi mere saiyaan
shabnam hain kabhi shole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole

matlab ke yeh rasiya hain
koyi inhen kya samjhe
yeh khud bhi nahin apne
bas in ko khuda samjhe
aa aa aa aa
dam bhar mein yeh tola hain
dam bhar mein yeh maasha hain
dam bhar mein yeh tola hain
dam bhar mein yeh maasha hain
bante hain tamashaayi
aur khud hi tamasha hain
bante hain tamashaayi
aur khud hi tamasha hain
aur khud hi tamasha hain

aa aa aa aa
reh reh ke badalte hain
din raat naye chole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
bedardi mere saiyaan
shabnam hain kabhi shole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole

har ek ada mere baalam ki niraali hai
baaten hain mohabbat ki
dil pyaar se khaali hai
hai
aadat hai badi chanchal
soorat hai badi saada
aadat hai badi chanchal
soorat hai badi saada
aaj is ko diya dhoka
kal us se kiya waada
aaj is ko diya dhoka
kal us se kiya waada
kal us se kiya waada
haa aa aa aa

harjaayi hai harjaayi
inse koyi kya bole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
bedardi mere saiyaan
shabnam hain kabhi shole
bedardi mere saiyaan
bedardi mere saiyaan
bedardi mere saiyaan
shabnam hain kabhi shole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole
andar se bade zaalim
baahar se bade bhole

The late Ravi lost to Shankar Jaikishan’s “Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai ” in the 1961 Filmfare Awards and not Dil Diya dard Liya which was scored by Naushad.

The Filmfare awards are always given for movies of the previous year. So These movies of 1960s were in contention for Fimfare awards of 1961. Yes, you are right, it was “Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraayi”, it was absentmindedness on my part.

Although Ravi’s Chaudhvin Ka Chaand lost to Shankar Jaikishan’s Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi in the 1961 Filmfare awards in the Best Music category, the coming year, i.e. 1962, saw Ravi beat off S-J’s Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai to get the award for Gharana.

Personally, I find JDMGBH songs far more superior & deserving than Gharana’s.

JDMGBH is a 1960 movie but we find it nominated in the ’62 awards. Maybe it was released towards the end of the year, ergo not eligible for consideration for the ’61 awards.

Surprisingly, in both these years (’61 & ’62), the great Naushad was the other losing nominee – both, Mughal-e-Azam and Ganga Jamna, were denied! Hard to swallow the fact that Mughal-e-Azam could ever have lost in the running for Best Music – in ANY year of that decade.

Naushad felt defeated when Shanker-Jaikishan’s Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960) stole the Filmfare Best Music Award from under the nose of Mughal-e-Azam. Naushad spoke up, addressing J C Jain who was the influential general manager of the Times of India group. “Jainsaab,” regretted Naushad, “It’s okay, you have voted against my Mughal-e-Azam when this epic happens to be carrying my richest score in 20 years. I have only one point to make. After this, never let it be written, in any of your publications, why the standard of Hindi film music is going down.”
