‘Born with a silver spoon’ is a phrase which has often been used with reference to a person born in a rich family. It would not be out of place if If I coin a similar pharse ‘born with the golden Hindi film songs’ with reference to Bharat Bhushan and Pradeep Kumar. They were blessed with the best of the songs of the golden era by picturising on them. There was not much to talk about their acting capabilities but they were so lucky in their filmy career that they paired with some of the most prolific heroines with their impeachable acting capabilities. No doubt, most of their films became the box office hits. They are known today even to the new generation mainly because of the songs they got to sing on the screen rather than for their acting ability.
Recently, I was listening to some of the songs picturised on Karan Dewan, one of the leading actors of the 40s and 50s. In my view, he was also a potential candidate to be tagged with Bharat Bhushan and Pradeep Kumar in the category of ‘born with the golden Hindi film songs’. Although Karan Dewan was a distant third in this category, I feel he was somewhat better placed than the other two in terms of histrionic abilities. Another plus point in his favour was that he himself was a good singer. Most of his films were also hit on the box office. How I can forget ‘duniyaa hamaare payaar ki yoon hi jawaan rahe” from LAHORE (1949) and ‘aajaa nigaaon mein aajaa’ from DAHEJ (1950).
A few days back, I came across a lovely Rafi-Geeta Dutt duet song ‘achchhaaji maaf kar do thodaa hisaab kar do’ from film MUSAAFIRKHAANA (1955) picturised on Karan Dewan and a young Shyama. The song was written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and set to music by O P Nayyar. I find it interesting to note two features of this song. First, the facial expressions and hand gestures of Karan Dewan in this song are more or less similar to the ones in his another song ‘ kusoor aapkaa huzoor aapkaa’ from BAHAAR (1950). Second, the orchestration of the song almost resembles that of ‘ye lo main haari piyaa huyi teri jeet re’ from AAR PAAR (1954).
This typical O P Nayyar’s fun song is lovely to listen to with good picturisation to support.

Song-Achcha jee maaf kar do (Musaafirkhaana)(1955) Singers-Rafi,Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
thhodaa insaaf kar do
dil par jo teer chalaaye
unkaa hisaab kar do
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
thhodaa insaaf kar do
dil par jo teer chalaaye
unkaa hisaab kar do
jaaoji maaf kiyaa
hamne insaaf kiyaa
is dil ko dil mein rakh ke
jhagdaa hi saaf kiyaa
jaaoji maaf kiyaa
hamne insaaf kiyaa
is dil ko dil mein rakh ke
jhagdaa hi saaf kiyaa
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
teri nazar to dil mein
karke toofaan gayi
teri nazar to dil mein
karke toofaan gayi
teri adaa hi thahri
apni to jaan gayi
teri adaa hi thahri
apni to jaan gayi
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
thhodaa insaaf kar do
dil par jo teer chalaaye
unkaa hisaab kar do
jaaoji maaf kiyaa
hamne insaaf kiyaa
is dil ko dil mein rakh ke
jhagdaa hi saaf kiyaa
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
chori se aaye dil mein
tumne kusoor kiyaa
chori se aaye dil mein
tumne kusoor kiyaa
dekhaa naa bhaalaa kyun ji
itnaa ghuroor kiyaa
dekhaa naa bhaalaa kyun ji
itnaa ghuroor kiyaa
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
thhodaa insaaf kar do
dil par jo teer chalaaye
unkaa hisaab kar do
jaaoji maaf kiyaa
hamne insaaf kiyaa
is dil ko dil mein rakh ke
jhagdaa hi saaf kiyaa
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
sabse kahoongaa toone dil bekraar kiyaa
sabse kahoongaa toone dil bekraar kiyaa
meraa hi ban ke dilbar mujh pe hi waar kiyaa
meraa hi ban ke dilbar mujh pe hi waar kiyaa
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
thhodaa insaaf kar do
dil par jo teer chalaayaa
unkaa hisaab kar do
jaaoji maaf kiyaa
hamne insaaf kiyaa
is dil ko dil mein rakh ke
jhagdaa hi saaf kiyaa
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
toone wo chaal chal di
jiskaa hisaab nahin
toone wo chaal chal di
jiskaa hisaab nahin
chori aur seenaazori
teraa jawaab nahin
chori aur seenaazori
teraa jawaab nahin
achchhaa ji maaf kar do
thhoda insaaf kar do
dil par jo teer chalaaye
unkaa hisaab kar do
jaaoji maaf kiyaa
hamne insaaf kiyaa
is dil ko dil mein rakh ke
jhagdaa hi saaf kiyaa
achchhaa ji maaf kar do

Kamath ji,
You have aptly described the 3 lucky heros of Hindi films. Not only they got the best songs, they also got the best films, best heroins and ironically best supporting brothers.
very few people know that these 3 actors ( ? ),had their brothers producing most of their films and promoting them from behind the curtain.
R.Chandra made films for Bharat Bhushan,Kalidas made films for Pradeep Kumar and Jaimini Dewan made films for Karan Dewan.”Rattan” which catapulted Karan Dewan to Fame and Name, was also produced by his brother Jaimini.Though ‘Rattan’ made millions on its music,Dewan Brothers did not get much of it.
K.Dewan was the original Silver jubilee star-of 25 films, much before Rajendra Kumar was billed as Jubilee Kumar in later years.
He had worked with Noorjehan,Suraiyya,meenakumari,Nargis,Nalini Jayawant,madhubala,munavvar Sultana,Swarnalata,Meena Shorey,Kamini kaushal,Jayashree,Geetabali,Vyjayantimala,Sandhya etc etc
He married Manju Desai,(sister of singer/actor Balakram) who was child artist of Prabhat Films.
Unforunately,in his last days Karan Dewan had to work as production Manager of B.R.Chopra for a living. The worst thing was when he died and was cremated at Chandanwadi Crematorium in Mumbai, none of the Film Industry people were present except Chandrashekhar and Manmohan krishna, who worked with him in Cine Artists’ Association.

Thanks for the interesting information.
While I was aware of Jaimini Dewan producing films, it is news to me that brothers of Bharat Bhushan and Pradeep Kumar producced the films.
