Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Hongkong China Mina Singapore

Posted on: March 13, 2012

“Hongkong” (1962) was produced and directed by A S Pachchi. The satrcast included Ashok Kumar, B Saroja Devi, Helen etc. This movie was one of the first movies that treated Indian movie goers to the sights of foreign locations, which was then a novelty in Hindi movies.

Here is a song from this movie which could well be called the title song cum theme song of the movie since Hongkong gets mentioned repeatedly in the lyrics of this song.

This song is a club song. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Helen. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

The movie as well as the song has been forgotten by now, but it is one of the earliest songs depicting foreign locations and as such this song should be regarded as a song of some historical importance. It is curious to note that Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, who wrote some serious ghazals for Madan Mohan in “Anpadh” (1962) also wrote such light hearted lyrics consisting of Hinglish and gibberish words for O P Nayyar in the same year.

Atul ji,
HONG KONG-1962 was a Pachchi production film, produced and directed by Sant Singh Pachchi. As you rightly said it was almost the First
film which was shot abroad-though not entirely, but in few scenes and it proved to be a selling point for the film
.Pachchi was so impressed by the film that he repeated the same theme again in International Crook-1974.
He also directed the Raj kapoor film,Around the world in 1967.In all these films foreign locations played an important role and he considered himself an experienced person in that.
The cast included Ashok kumar and B.Saroja Devi(and NOT Jamuna),K.N.Singh and others.
MD was OPNayyar and the songs were written by Q.Jalalabadi,Shevan Rizvi,SHBihari and Raja mehdi ali khan. The story by pachchi,s/play and dia-by Baldev.
Ashok Bakshi (Ashok kumar) an ambitious police officer is appointed to trace and destroy an international gang of Gold,Diamond and Narcotic smugglers. It is operative in India and neighbouring countries.
Bakshi starts his work and soon finds that one Mr.Singh is Indian operator.he tracks him and travels to Rangoon,Singapore,Bangkok and Hong Kong.
In Hongkong he meets Rita(B.Saroja Devi) a dancer who works for Singh.Bakshi contacts HK Police. They are very honest, hardworking patriotic and disciplined. They extend all help.Singh(K.N.Singh)
tries to lure him with Rita’s dances, but Rita falls in his love and Bakshi also loves her.Even money could not buy Bakshi.
When Bakshi and Rita are caught by Singh and are about to be killed,HK police rescue them.Singh is arrested, his gang busted and Bakshi returns to India with 2 prize catches-Singh and his lover Rita.

It seems this film is lost to posterity, I’ve only ever seen bits and pieces of really really bad quality video…

Too bad, it seems like such fun!
