Aamdani athanni kharcha rupaiyya

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The union budget is being presented in the parliament today. Our able finance minister will be making this annual effort to analyze, manage and provide for the various expenses required to run this huge nation of almost 125 crore Indians. The success of the successive governments in honestly deciphering, managing and presenting a budget – well, it has been a questionable exercise over the years to say the least. The bane of the budget, and the misfortune of the entire nation, is the disastrous concept of deficit financing – a device used by the government (not just in India, but everywhere else in the world), wherein the budget outlay proposes expenses much more than the money that is there in government’s kitty.

Beginning to sound familiar :).

So where does this deficit financing come from? It is so well explained by the opening verse of this song – “Aamdanni Atthanni Kharchaa Rupaiyyaa”. That one earns half a rupee, and spends a full one rupee. And what would that result in? obviously – “nateejaa tthan tthan gopal”. That one is left with empty pockets at the end of the day. Actually more than empty pockets, one is left with burdens of debts that are never ending, and become a problem of subsequent generations.

The predicament is the same, whether it be a household, a family, or a the entire nation. Spending more than what one earns is a formula for disaster in any case. The age old proverbs we get to hear and read in our culture say, “jitni chaadar ho, paaon utney hi phailaane chaahiye” (stretch your legs only as much as is the size of your bedsheet). But alas, who pays heed to these homilies, not the government of course, for they are driven more by political motivations and vested interests, that the welfare of the nation. Anyways. . . 😦

This is a fun song from ‘Teen Bahuraniyaan’ (1968), Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi, music is by Kalyanji Anandji. The singers are Asha Bhosle, Kamal Barot, Mahendra Kapoor, and chorus. As I listened to the song again, I realize that there are two more voices that are not identified; one for Prithviraj Kapur, and another male voice. On screen one can see Prithviraj Kapoor, Agha, Ramesh Deo, Rajendranath, Sowcar Janaki, Jayanti, Vaishali, and a host of child artists. I request other knowledgeable readers to help identify the additional voices in this song, and the child artistes.

From the lyrics, it is evident that the grandfather and children are concerned with the way in which the parents are handling the domestic finances, and the words show the back and forth argument between the two teams on this issue.

‘Teen Bahuraaniyaan’ is 1968 production from Gemini, Madras. It is a social comedy that tells about how a happy joint family starts getting into trouble when they being to copy the life style of their neighbours. The film describes situations and gives a message that is as timeless as the concept of family itself.

The film is directed by SS Vaasan and SS Baalan. The songs are penned by Anand Bakshi and the music composition is by Kalyan ji Anand ji. The cast of actors includes Prithviraj Kapoor, Rajendranath, Shashikala, Lalita Pawar, Agha, Dhoomal, Ramesh Deo, Jagdeep, Kanhaiyalal, Niranjan Sharma, Sowcar Jaanki, Kanchana, Jayanti, Vaishali and a very young Farida Jalaal.

Enjoy is comic economic statement on the state of finances, a statement that applies equally well to a nation as well as to a family. Have laugh. . . and also a lesson. Enjoy

  1. What a timely and relevant article!
At least for now, the new Railway Minister should take note of this song 🙂

I had seen this movie in the theater and I immensely liked it. Subsequently, I saw this movie on TV many years back. This is one movie like PADAOSAN (1968), CHUPKE CHUPKE (1975) which can be watched umpteen times without getting bored.

Thanks for your ‘presentation’ to the readers of this blog on the budget day.

  3. Sudhir ji,
TEEN BAHURANIYAN-1968 was a remake of a Tamil hit film Directed by K. Balchander,BHAMA VIJAYAM-1967.It had become so popular that people used to stand in the q s for tickets whole night and next day.
This film was very hilarious and touched the chords in the hearts of the middle class audience as the subject matter was close to their hearts-how to adjust income with expenditure when fulfilling dreams !
Prithwiraj kapoor in the role of the head of the family-Deenanath excelled in his role.He has 3 sons-Shanker(Agha),Music Teacher, married to Parvati-Sowcar Janaki,Ram-Ramesh Deo,a clerk in the High court, married to Seeta-Kanchan and Kanhaiyya-Rajendranath,a Medical Rep.,married to Radha-jayanti.
Their family also has Mala, sister of Seeta, who is studying.
There are 6 children in the house.
When everything is going on well, the famous film star Sheela Devi-Shashikala,comes to stay as their neighbour and the entire family becomes topsy-turvy !
The film tries to convey a message that one should realise his limitations and not fall a prey to false prestige beyond one’s capacity.Afterall, the grass is always greener outside the Window !
like a typical south family drama, this film was full of plots, subplots and too many characters.
overall it was a very enjoyable film.

  5. Sadanand ji, Pradeep ji, Prakash ji, Arun ji,

Thanks so much for your messages.

One thing is that we are able to find a song to fit a situation, like today’s budget presentation. But the other associated fact is that Hindi films probably have a song that one can associate with practically any situation, any event. One just has to search for it deep enough.

    Arun ji,
Thanks once again for your detailed synopsis of the film. Your comments are indeed a fulfilling addition to the write ups.

    Prakash ji,
Thanks for the identifications that you have sent in your message.

I am still wanting to know who has sung the lines for Prithviraj Kapoor. One thought is that it could be Prithviraj ji himself. But I am just speculating. Maybe other readers can help.

  6. Sudhirji
It is Baby Farida, I think she is not our Farida Jalaal,
This Baby Farida is there(as a child artiste) in
Ram aur shyam(1967),Dosti(1964),Brahmachari(1968),Dil diya dard liya(as young waheeda),Jab Jab Phool khile(as shashi kapoor`s young friend),Aasra,Devar,Janwar

This Baby Farida is now playing her second innings:with the name FARIDA DADI->Like appeared as Ompuri`s wife in Dhol(2007) &
    3 Idiots(as Madhavan`s mother) and many Hindi T.V.serials.

Further about the playback voice of Prithviraj kapoor, It may be Prithviraj ji himself .

I am not very sure about this ->But Anandji of Kalyanji anand ji duo also sung some lines of their songs,This is pure speculation, this may be wrong. It may be his voice also.Again I am speculating this.

    regards
