“Batwaara” (1961) was a Deep and Sandeep Production movie. In other words, this movie was produced by Pradeep Kumar with his brother. Karunesh Thakur directed the movie and the starcast of the movie had names like Pradeep Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Rehman, Jabeen Jalil, Leela Chitnis, Jagdish Sethi, Wasti, Shashikala, Jawahar Kaul etc.
I became aware of this movie when I was informed about a superb song from this movie viz. Ye raat ye fizaayen phir aayen ya naa aayen.
This movie in fact has some very nice songs in it. It is one of those movies where the songs were so good that the movie so average that the movie did not deserve them.
Here is a nice birthday song from this movie. In this song, Shashikala is celebrating the birthday of her son by singing this song. In this song she imagines her to be a groom who will go in his baraat and bring home a bride. Hindi movie makers would tend to treat kids as a straight line extension of grown ups and would often show mothers imagining their kids as groom/bride in their imagination. And then kids would be shown playing games of gudda and gudiya. Hindi movies those days would did not allow kids to be kids, I suppose.
The song itself is nice to listen to and watch. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle with gusto. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S Madan.
This movie must be regarded as one of the finest achievement of this unsung music director .

Atul ji,
BATWARA-1961 was directed by Karunesh Thakur,who was essentially a writer of film stories,s/plays and dialogues.He directed 2 more films-Aanchal ke phool-68 and Albeli-74.
The story,s/play and dialogues were by C.L.Kavish and Music was by s.Madan.
S.Madan was Madan Sachdeva.Starting with Batwara,he went on to give music to Danka-69(unreleased),Ambe Maa-80,Teri pooja kare sansar-84,Yeh pyar Nahin-88,Test tube baby-91 and Duniya ki Rangeen Raten-97. He died in 2003 in Mumbai.
After Partition,the family of Dhaniram,consisting of his aged father,wife,3 sons,kundan,Pran and Madan,wives of Kundan and Pran settle in Dehradoon as displaced family.Dhaniram runs a Chemist shop with honesty.Kundan and Pran help him.When he refuses to cooperate with profiteers,Dhaniram is stabbed.Now Pran runs the shop.Instigated by his wife Pran resorts to illegal business to make money.Kundan works as stone contractor.
There is discord in the family and house is divided by a brick wall.Pran corners the shop.Shortly,Police arrest Pran for illegal work and is fined 25oo rupees or jail.Kundan who is in hospital due to a mining accident,runs back to home,pawns family jewels and pays his fine.Pran thinks,his friend has helped him.When Pran comes home,his son falls from terrace and requires medicine.No one in the market gives him any medicine,but Kundan brings it.Pran also comes to know Kundan’s sacrifice.Pran is not allowed to enter home,but his mother tries to help him thru a hole in the wall and her neck gets stuck.
To rescue her,the wall has to be broken and the repentant Pran and the entire family reunite.
