This blog, which began as a one man show has by now become a multiple contributor bandwagon of likeminded music lovers. With time, we now have several contributors who have begun to achieve their own landmarks of century and multiple century marks.
This song marks the 200th lyrics contribution by Prakashchandra. When it came to picking a song for the occasion, I had lots and lots of songs to chose from, because I have several contributions from him (as well as others) pending with me for quite some time. There may be occasions when I am unable to post songs for various reasons, and one of the reasons for not posting the songs is that these songs are often so good that I want to hold them back for some important occasions. I have lots and lots of such songs held up with me like this.
I was spoilt for choice when it came to discussing the 200th contribution of Prakashchandra. Finally I have decided upon this lullaby from “Aasra” (1966). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle with feeling and it is picturised with sensitivity on Nirupa Roy and Balraj Sahni who find an orphaned baby and bring him up as their own child. “Who says you are an orphan, you are the hope of our lives”- this is the refrain of this song, and it is quite a moving song indeed.
Here is hoping that we will continue to get lots and lots of great lyrics from Prakashchandra in the days to come as well.
As mentioned above, I have lots and lots of lyrics pending with me for discussions. It shows how much ground we still have to cover. I hope that all our contributors will show the same patience and understanding that they have shown so far towards my inability to discuss many of these songs soon enough.

Song-Mere soone jeewan ka aasra hai tu (Aasra)(1966) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)
Mere soone jeewan ka aasra hai tu
mere soone jeewan ka aasra hai tu
kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
mere soone jeewan ka aasra hai tu
kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
Kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
Munne tu bhi so jaa,
saare lage sone
aayee nindiya leke nainon ke khilone
Munne tu bhi so jaa,
saare lage sone
Aayee nindiya leke nainon ke khilone
Sapne salone
Mere soone jeevan ka aasra hai tu
Kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
Kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
Duniya ki nazar se,
tujhe main bachaaoon
Gore mukhde pe kaala,
teeka lagaaoon
Duniya ki nazar se,
tujhe main bachaaoon
Gore mukhde pe kaala,
teeka lagaaoon
Sabse chupaaoon
Mere soone jeewan ka aasra hai tu
kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
tere jaisa koi ,
phool hai na taara
mera raaja beta,
chandaa se bhi pyaraa
tere jaisa koi ,
phool hai na taara
mera raaja beta,
chandaa se bhi pyaaraa
sun le jag saara
mere soone jeewan ka aasra hai tu
kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
mere soone jeewan ka aasra hai tu
Kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
kaun kehta hai ,
be-aasraa hai tu
kaun kehta hai,
be-aasra hai tu

Aap hamaare bheje huye gaanon ko bolon ko lekar, hamse request mat keejiyega, Pleeeease, bahut SANKOCH mehsoos hota hai.
aapko apnaa samjhkar do baar maine aapka dil dukhaayaa hai, aap aur request karoge tho mujhe aur bhi kasht ho jaayega….
Par especially mujhse aap gaanon ke bolon ko lekar request karne ki zaroorat hi nahin. Aap mere bade bhai jaise hain…..

What a good and natural actor Balraj Sahni is!! Nirupa Roy is such an original in mother-kind of roles. Cute babies, Ashaji’s voice is a bonus.

I love this lori. I used to hear it on the radio all the time, like you said Atul, sung feelingly by Asha. Many congratulations Prakashji, may your contributions increase manyfold.

Prakash ji,
Wow, and congratulations. And apologies for the delayed message from my side.
Great going – two centuries, that is a lot of lyrics writing. Thanks so much for your effort; it is such a positive enrichment to this blog.
Btw, in the interim, I sent in translations for two ghazals from Umrao Jaan, “Zindagi Jab Bhi Teri Bazm Mein Laati Hai Hamen”, and “Ye Kya Jageh Hai Dosto”. And no, I have not forgotten your request for translation of “Dikhayi Diye Yun”, it should be coming up shortly also.
Keep it up, lots and lots of great songs still to go.
Cheers and all the best
Sudhir
