Greetings to all on the arrival of the Navratri festival, a nine days celebration of Maa Durga, the Mother Goddess. And even more – hearty greetings for a Happy New Year, Nav Samvatsar 2069, the beginning of the new year as per the Vikrami calendar, established by King Vikramaditya of Ujjain. The calendar starts with the first day after the new moon in the month Chaitra, and generally falls in March-April time frame.

Navratri, literally a celebration of nine nights, is a festival that actually occurs once in every quarter, i.e. four times a year. Of these, the celebration that occurs in the month of Chaitra and the month of Ashwin are the better known and more popular Navratri celebrations. The Chaitra navratri end with the celebration of Ram Navami, the birth anniversary of Lord Ram. The Ashwin Navratri are followed on the next day by Dushehra, the celebration of the victory of Lord Ram over Raavan, the King of Lanka. Besides these two, the navratri celebrations also occur in the months of Aashaad and Paush / Maagh. These are also called the Gupt Navratri, or the lesser known or secret Navratri.

The Navratri or the festival of nine nights, is a celebration of the nine manifestations of Mother Goddess. These nine forms of manifestation are Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta,Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyaayini, Kaalraatri , Mahagauri and Siddhidaatri. The description of these forms is as given below.

Shailaputri – On the first day of Navratri, the Mother Goddess is worshipped in the manifestation of Shailaputri, whose head is adorned by a halfmoon, who rides a bull and carries a spear. She is known as the form of Durga when she took birth as daughter of Great Himalayas.

Brahmacharini -The Brahmacharini form of Mother Goddess is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. She holds a rosary and a kamandalu in her lotus hands and her nature is to attain Sachchidanandamaya Brahmaswarupa – the Existence (sat)-Knowledge (chitt)-Bliss (anand) absolute. She represents the phase when Maa Parvati did penance as a Tapasvini, before her marriage to Lord Shiva.

Chandraghanta – On the third day of Navratri, the Mother Goddess is worshipped in the form of Chandraghanta, who rides on a Tiger. She wears the semi-circular moon (Chandra) which appears like a bell (Ghanta) on her forehead.

Kushmanda – On the fourth day, the manifestation of Mother Goddess is called Kushmanda. She holds two pitchers full of blood in her lotus hands and the universe is created, sustained and drawn within Devi’s ownself in a wink. In this form Mother Durga creates solar system by bestowing her powers unto Lord Sun.

Skandamata – The fifth day of Navratri is the celebration of Skandamata. She is eternally seated on a throne and her hands are adorned with lotuses. As the Mother of Skanda or Kartikeya, she is known as Skandmata.

Katyaayini – The sixth day of Navratri, the manifestation of Mother Goddess is Katyaayani. She holds shining Chandrahasa (Sword) in her hand and rides a magnificent lion and destroys the demons. When Maa Parvati’s partial power took birth in the home of Sage Katyaayan, then the Mother Goddess the known as Maa Katyaayini.

Kaalraatri – On the seventh day, the Mother Goddess is worshipped as Maa Kaalraatri. She is shown as having long lips, and rides an ass. She shines in various hues and is adorned with multi coloured ornaments. As per the description in Skand Purana, Maa Parvati liberates Devi’s golden outer sheath and becomes dark complexioned. In this form she is called as Maa Kaalraatri.

Mahagauri – On the eighth day, the Mother Goddess is worshipped as Maha Gauri. She rides a white bull and wears spotless white clothes. She represents purity and provides everlasting bliss to Lord Shiva.

Siddhidaatri – On the ninth day of celebrations, the manifestation of Mother Goddess is called Siddhidaatri. She is known as Siddhidaayini, the bestower of good fortune and success. In this form, the Mother Goddess was worshipped by Lord Shiva himself to manifest in the form of Goddess Ardhnaarishwara, and then the Mother Goddess appeared from the left side of Lord Shiva.

This bhajan tells about the celebrations of the nine forms of the Mother Goddess. I remember having heard this bhajan on the radio long time back, during the radio listening days. At that time I had no more information about it, and actually believed it to be a non-filmi bhajan. Some days back, as I was exploring for a good bhajan for today, I came across this creation that belongs to the film ‘Nav Durga’ (1953). When I played it, it turns out to be this long time favorite bhajan of mine.

Film ‘Nav Durga’ is a religious film produced under the banner of Basant Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Babubhai Mistry. The star cast of this film includes Usha Kiran, Mahipal, SN Tripathi, Sulochana Chatterjee, Rajni, Abhyankar, Maruti, Charubala, Dalpat, Shri Bhagwan, Roopmati, Amarnath, Chandralekha, Agha Shahpur, Leela Jaywant, Julian, Raja Sandow etc.

The lyrics of this wonderful bhajan are penned by Ramesh Chandra Pandey and its music is composed by SN Tripathi. The singing voice belongs to Chitragupt, who is better known to readers as another music director.

May the Mother Goddess bestow all good health and happiness, and bless all your endeavors with success. May this new Samvatsar 2069 herald in peace and prosperity for yourself and your family.

A very Happy New Year to all.

Sudhir ji,
Thanks a million for selecting and posting this song.I am more happy that this Bhajan has come on the auspicious day of GUDHI PADAVA,which is celebrated all over Maharashtra and is an important day here, today.
I wish all our readers a HAPPY NEW YEAR.This is a New year day in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka also along with Maharashtra. In AP it is called UGADHI(Yugadi= begining of the new period).
This bhajan occupies an important place in my memory. This was my father’s favourite Bhajan. We had a Gramophone and plenty of records. He had purchased 2 records of this Bhajan. His excuse was that after the first record is spoiled by overuse or if it is broken,we can always play the other one.In due course of time,we acquired an imported GRUNDING Tape recorder with large spools and I recorded all our records and Bhajans etc. on the spools.Later however we got the Cassettes of this Bhajan. So,for a very long time I have enjoyed this Bhajan.Of late however,it had disappeared, but today, you have given me back my fav Bhajan. Thanks a lot.
you have also given an excellent info on the 9 Roops or Avatars of Maa Devi Durga. For the uninitiated this is a mine of information. Thanks once again.
Come any Festival,be sure to get an appropriate song from Sudhir ji,with its History too. Thanks and delight us same way in future too.

Sudhir ji,
NAVDURGA-1953 was a very popular and a hit film in those days.As such there is a set of audience in India, comprising of seniors and women, who are a definite visitors to such mythological movies.I had a peculiar attraction of these movies, not for its Pauranik content but for the Trick scenes, for which the name of Babubhai Mistry was more than enough.
MD was SNTripathi and lyrics were by Anjum Jaipuri and Ramesh chandra Pandey-who specialised in writing for devotional, mythological and other C grade films. He wrote for about 25 such films from 1943 to 1976.
Mythological stories are always full of lot of characters and it is difficult to keep a track in the film as to who is who’s who, because due to similar costumes all look same-the only difference being male and female !
Suryawarcha is punished by Indra dev for his arrogance and is sent to mrityulok(Earth),when he is about to get married to Vishala. On Visahala’s request Vishnu assures that he will come back to swarga again, but she must prey to Maa Durga.
Maurvi d/o asur Mur wants to take revenge on Krishna for killing her father. She marries Ghatotkach s/o Bhima. They get a son Barbarik(Suryavarch),whom Murvi takes to Navdurga at Guptakshetra Sangam and prays.
Barbarik gets a boon of invincibility except for an Avtar of Vishnu. He goes to pandavas and challenges them, knowing that Krishna will also come there. In the war,Krishna severes his head with Sudarshan Chakra.Mata Durga appears and takes Suryavarcha to heaven where his consort Vishala is still waiting with a Garland.

Arun ji, Aparna ji, Prakash ji,

Thanks for the messages of greetings. Yes, this day is very widely celebrated across the country, maybe under different names, but with same spirit – of renewal and rejuvenation.

And Arun ji,
More thanks to you for posting the synopsis of this film. I am glad to know that this bhajan is so important for you. I remember it from my radio listening days, when the festivals were appropriately represented on the radio waves, with songs from films.

Bluefilre ji
Thanks for pointing out the error in the display while the song is playing. I missed mentioning that in the write up.

Rgds all
Sudhir
