The makers of “Qawwali Ki Raat” (1964) had a tough task ahead of them. They were required to make a movie along the lines of “Barsaat Ki Raat” (1960).
As a movie, “Qawwali Ki Raat” (1964) did not come close to “Barsaat Ki Raat” (1964) as far as box office success was concerned. I in fact think that “Qawwali Ki Raat” (1964) would have done better on its own if it was not sought to be projected as a challenge to “Barsaat Ki Raat” (1964).
If one does not compare between the two movies, then I would say that the qawwalis of this movie are wonderful on their own right. I have discussed as many as five songs from this movie, and they are all superb qawwalis.
Here is the title qawwali from this movie. Like most qawwalis, this song has lots and lots of singers singing for losts and lots of actors. The qawwali pits a lady qawwal (Mumtaz) against lots of male qawwals and shows her beating her male adversaries hands down. Bravo Mumtaz, and Bravo Asha Bhonsle. Asha Bhonsle and female chorus is pitted against the likes of Manna Dey, Rafi, Balbir and the male chorus and the over ten minutes long qawwali is a treat to the senses. Shewan Rizvi, who wrote the immortal qawwali Hamen to loot liya mil ke husn waalon ne (Al Hilaal) was the lyricist and he came up with superb lyrics which are the star attraction of this qawwali. Iqbal Qureshi is the music director.
Writing down the lyrics of such a long qawwali, and also indicating the singers against the lines is not easy. I thank Ava Suri for providing me the lyrics of this song. I would have loved her to provide the write up too, seeing that she had provided the subtitling for this qawwali for a compilation of Mumtaz songs done by Tom. Since Ava sent me only the lyrics, it gives me the opportunity to write about this song myself. And guess what ! This song is a special song for the blog ! It is the 5700 th song of the blog. Yes, we complete yet another century of songs in this blog with this qawwali.
I must say that this is a wonderful song to mark the 5700th song of the blog. Almost un noticeably, this blog now has lots of contributors joining the bandwagon, making this an almost realtime collaboration of likeminded music lovers. A few of the contributors in fact have notched their own centuries of contributions. So many regulars now a days provide me with lyrics, write ups, information, suggestions etc that I believe we are on to something special as a community of music lovers. We could well be creating a list of Hindi movie musical gems that may become a valuable source for people seeking reliable information on this topic. And I am happy that we have made good progress in the past three years and more. During this period, I have become acquainted with so many people online and I have even met a couple of them (namely Raja and Sudhir). I hope that this blog will help bring daily cheer in the lives of its followers and will continue to contribute its mite in the cause of music lovers. I take this opportunity to thank all the well wishers of this blog and I hope that this musical caravan will continue to move on and on.

Nazar se karne chale hain,

hamein bhi dekhna hai
aaj hausla dil ka
kehne waale tu bhi keh le,
kehne waale tu bhi keh le
jo dil ki baat hai
kehne waale tu bhi keh le
jo dil ki baat hai
qawwali ki raat hai,
qawwali ki raat
qawwali ki raat hai,
qawwali ki raat
kehne wale tu bhi keh le,
jo dil ki baat hai,
haay
kehne wale tu bhi keh le,
jo dil ki baat hai
qawwali ki raat hai,

tera roop ek kali hai
mera dard bekali hai
tujhe rang-o-boo miley hain
mujhe arzoo mili hai,
mili hai
meri aarzoo ne lekin
jahaan jal ke aah ki hai
wahin shaam pad gayi hai,
wahin raat ho gayi hai
jahaan dil jala hai mera,
aa aa
wahin roshni hui hai
wahin roshni hui hai,
hui hai,
wahin roshni hui hai
magar ishq shola hai,
shabnam kahaan
magar Ishq shola hai,
shabnam kahaan
Jo mujhmein ada hai
wo tujhme kahaan
Jo mujhme ada hai
wo tujhme kahaan

zubaan se uff na niklegi,
mita kar dekh le hamko
Yakin tujhko na ho to

aur zubaan teri
zubaan par hum nahin
laaye hain ab tak daastaan teri

Gosh, I am honored that you made this the 5700th song, it took me days to copy it down, the big problem was the repetitions which were hard to count as the song goes at a breakneck pace.
Like I said in my letter, I was so keen on having this qawwali in Tom’s video compilation that when he gave up on cleaning the video at one time,my heart sank. But luckily he rallied and managed to clean it up. it was really really hard for me to translate it. i had to watch the qawwali countless number of times and each time I marveled at the poise and confidence of Mumtaz. This was a very early film for her, she was new to this world, yet she was to the manner born and I have never seen her look gauche in ONE video. I have seen quite a few of them along with Tom.
Thanks for providing so much information about the lyricist and the music director. If I hear the words Iqbal Qureshi now, I know I am going to listening to some lovely music

Wow, it must have been a phenomenal effort to write down the lyrics of this one. Especially if you consider the repetitions, the different singers (and therefore colours), it’s one hell of a job. Kudos to Ava for her effort on this one.
I love to listen and watch qawwalis, there’s so much life in them, it’s like a party atmosphere. There’s hardly a qawwali I do not like.
And congrats to Atul for the 5700th. This might have been a slightly slower century than more recent ones but that does not matter. What matters is that we are still discovering gems and there’s now quite a bunch of contributors keeping the pace on the blog going. That’s a wonderful feeling. But Atul, it all started with you – and we are therefore most thankful to you for creating this treasure in cyberspace, not just for us but for future generations too.

I am not a great fan of qawwalis except a few such as the iconic one from ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1964. This qawwali is one of such exceptions and is worthy of making it to 5700th post.
Ava Suri,
I must admire your dedication and patience in jotting down one of the longest lyrics with multiple singers for this blog. I would not have even attempted it. 🙂

I could be mistaken, however there is only one line sung by him.
Thank you Sadanandji. I can imagine how hard the person who wrote down the lyrics for the iconic “Na to caravan ki talaash hai” worked. Was it you, Atul? That one was a marathon.
I love filmi qawwali’s with all the style and glamour.
Have you seen this movie Atul? I do wish to now. Your appreciation of a song increases when you see it in context.

Atul ji,
Great going – one more century, and the bar is at 57 now. Congratulations.
Well 6000 songs, here we come. 🙂
Regarding the singers, I would also agree that it must be Balbir and not Manhar. Generally, Manhar’s debut song is considered as the duet with Suman Kalyanpur from the film ‘Vishwaas’ (1969) – “Aap Se Hum Ko Bichhde Huye Ek Zamaana Beet Gayaa”.
Ava ji,
Great effort, and a lovely qawwaali; was just waiting for this to appear here on the blog.
Thanks a lot 🙂
