Jaane kyun preetam na aaye

Posted on: April 11, 2012

“Ek Thhi Reeta” (1971) is a recent movie by the standards of this blog, yet that has not prevented it from becoming an obscure movie nearly as soon as this movie was released. This movie was produced and directyed by Roop K Shorey. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Rehman, Yogiraj, I. S. Johar, Tanuja, Pompi, Mona Mullick, Manmohan Krishna, Madhu Kumar, Lolita Chatterjee, Daisy Irani, Faryal etc ion it and the movie must have sunk without a trace seeing that I had not heard of this movie during 1971 when I was a precocious kid keen to know about everything.

I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. Here is another song from the movie. Only the audio of this song is available. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Prem Jullundhari is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jaidev.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Jaane kyun preetam na aaye (Ek Thhi Reeta)(1971) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Prem Jallundhari, MD-Jaidev

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

jaane kyun preetam naa aaye

jaane kyun preetam naa aaye
pyaar ki dhadkan badhti jaaye
jaane kyun preetam naa aaye

gumsum paayal
bichhuaa ghaayal
baat nihaaren
paanv bekal
gumsum paayal
bichhuaa ghaayal
baat nihaaren
paanv bekal
tadap rahe hain
sukh dukh chal chal
rom rom ko naain banaayein
jaane kyun preetam naa aaye
pyaar ki dhadkan badhti jaaye
jaane kyon preetam naa aaye

gajraa chanchal
mehndi sheetal
haath ko tarse
haath ye komal
gajraa chanchal
mehndi sheetal
haath ko tarse
haath ye komal
pyaar pukaare
aa mil aa mil
aas kaa aanchal
chhootaa jaaye
jaane kyun preetam naa aaye

mann mein hulchul
preet hai nirbal
sochein sooni
saansein bojhal
mann mein hulchul
preet hai nirbal
sochein sooni
saansein bojhal
thham gaye jaise
har chhin har pal
pyaas milan ki
badhti jaaye
jaane kyun preetam naa aaye
pyaar ki dhadkan badhti jaaye
jaane kyun preetam naa aaye

Atul ji,
EK THI RITA-1971 was produced and directed by Roop K Shorey.
After the eternal Hit film EK THI LADKI-1949,Shorey never could forget its success. After partition, when Meena Shorey decided to migrate to Pakistan, he resisted, but finally they both went there.Roop Shorey came back to India but Meena decided to stay in Pakistan.
After waiting for her endlessly,Roop gave her the divorce and Meena married 4 times in Pakistan, before dying without a husband and in sheer poverty.
Roop Shorey never ever forgot Ek thi Ladki. He decided to remake the film with his Mascots of that film-namely I.S.Johar and Majnu. He produced EK THI RITA in 1971 with almost the same story, but the film flopped terribly and disappeared without a trace within no time.
This was his last film.Soon Roop K Shorey died disillusioned and a sad person,in 1973.Till the end he loved Meena.
Madame Sunita(I S Johar) and Anita(Majnu) are in reality heads of a smugglers gang.Under the guise of social service these ladies(?) donate and find rich persons to loot.On one such visit to a Hospital, they meet Mohanlal,a murder convict who is almost dying. He tells them abut his daughter. They find out Rita(Tanuja) and bring her to their palatial house.
With a false charge of murder they blackmail her to help them.Rita knows their reality and escapes only to land in a posh office, where she is mistaken for a candidate from Employment Exchange and appointed secretary to Ravi Kumar(Vinod Mehra) the GM of the firm.Meanwhile Mohanlal gets well and is released.he searches for Rita.
Ravi and Rita come to another town to meet a client Mr.Diwan,Not getting Hotel room, they work as cook and bearer and as husband wife in the house of Diwan.
Neelkamal(Faryal) engaged to Ravi, comes to Diwan’s house with her father-Ravi’s boss, while searching for Ravi.
All the confusion is sorted out,Mohanlal meets Rita and Johar-Majnu go to jail.
Such a complicated story went over the head of the audience and it got rejected.

Thanks a lot for the story of this movie. I was not aware that this movie was a remake of “Ek Thi Ladki” (1949). The songs of “Ek Thhi Ladki” are still remembered especially the “Laara Lappa” song, whereas the songs of ‘Ek Thhi Rita” have been forgotten alongwith the movie.

prakash ji,
After I declared that I have no answer to your query,I was very uneasy and I determined to get the answer to your query at any cost.
Here is the answer-

K.D.Shorey hails from Jallunder and was working as Excise and Taxation officer in Punjab Govt.He left the job and came to Bombay to enter film industry.he started as a Story and Dialogue writer in Zinda dil-1975.Then came Bereham-80 in which he wrote the story and produced the film under the banner of K.D.S.Films.In Bad aur Badnaam-1984,he wrote story and s/play.He then produced and directed Mahayudh-1998.
meanwhile he also became the General Secretary of Film Federation of India.
He is the father of Ranvir Shorey, the actor and Lokesh Shorey who is a businessman in USA.
I hope I have answered your query successfully.
