“Raakhi” (1962) was a Prabhuiram Pictures production. It was directed by A Bhimsingh.The movie had Ashok Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Pradeep Kumar, Raj Mehra, Randhir, Shivraj, Mohan Choti, Ameeta, Mehmood,Malika, Lalita Pawar etc in it.
A title like “Raakhi” makes me guess that it was one of those tear jerker movies that were especially patronised by female audiences. Our inhouse expert Mr Arunkumar Deskmukh tells us that female audience use to cry at emotional scenes of such movies. This would enable the movie makers to laugh all the way to the bank as a result.
I have discussed two songs from “Raakhi”(1962) in the past. Here is another song which I do not recall hearing earlier. I may have heard it in the past without paying much attention to it. This song shows Ashok Kumar, alongwith his daughter and a servant travelling on a train. The picturisation also shows Waheeda Rehman, holding her son missing him at home.
The song, which plays in the background is sung by Rafi with his usual feeling and involvement. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and music is composed by Ravi.

‘Raakhi’ was worth a good cry. It was a remake of the Tamil hit ‘Paasa Malar’. It was the story of a man and and his sister and how the strong bonds are tested to breaking point. Ashok Kumar and Waheeda Rehman were the lead pair as the siblings. Pradeep Kumar had an equally important role of Ashok Kumar’s close friend who marries Waheeda and is the cause of all the troubles. Ameeta had a small crucial role as Ashok Kumar’s wife who dies during childbirth. She did the role memorably. By the way, Sivaji Ganesa was the producer of this hit movie!
