Posted on: April 12, 2012

“Nartaki” (1963) was a Film Bharti Production. It was directed by Satyen Nitin Bose. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Nanda, Om Prakash, Agha, Preeti Bala, Nana Palsikar, Chandrima Bhaduri, Moni Chatterjee, Aruna Irani etc in it.

Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is another song from the movie. this song is a piano song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Preetibala, who was also known as Zeb Rehman in subsequent movies.

Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Aaj duniya badi suhaani hai (Nartaki)(1963) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
kaisi rangeen zindagaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai

jaane kyun aaj dil mein reh reh kar
meethe meethe khayaal aate hain
jaane kyun aaj mere honthon par
kuchh adhoorey sawaal aate hain
yeh haqeeqat hai ya kahaani hai
yeh haqeeqat hai ya kahaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
kaisi rangeen zindagaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai

yoon nazar aa raha hai jaise koyi
aaj mere qareeb aata ho
aur dil ki haseen raahon mein
zindagi ke diye jalaata ho
jaane kis ki yeh meharbaani hai
jaane kis ki yeh meharbaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
kaisi rangeen zindagaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai
aaj duniya badi suhaani hai

This is such a sweet song. I love these kind of soft, romantic numbers.

The (deadly)combination of Ravi and Asha Bhosle never disappointed me.
Thank you Atif ji for the song.

Atul ji,
NARTAKI-1963 was directed by Phalke award winner NITIN BOSE and NOT Satyen Bose.
Nitin Bose who started life as a cinematographer in 1928 with Devdas-28,later started directing at the behest and encouragement(order ?)of B.N.Sircar of New Theatres, where Nitin was employed. His first Directorial venture was Chandidas-1934.He was also the director of Dhoop Chhaon-1935,in which the FIRST Playback Singing was tried by R.C.Boral.After disputes with BNSircar,Bose came down to Bombay and directed classics like Ganga Jamuna,Deedar,Kathputli,Waaris etc.He retired in 1972,got Phalke Award in 1977 and died on 14-4-86 at the ripe age of 90 yrs.
Though Nitin Bose was a noted director, the story of Nartaki was so commonplace and out of tune with the social atmosphere in India that time, that it was rejected by the audience. Many better and more popular films on this subject had come same time.somehow the magic of Nitin Bose did not work here.
Laxmi(Nanda) is a singing tawayef in the Kotha of Mausi Rampyari(Chandrima Bhaduri) who was very possessive and strict with her ‘girls’ They were not allowed to talk to outsiders,or even read anything.Laxmi was getting suffocated here.In a chance meeting of Prof.Nirmal(Sunil Dutt),her world changes.Nirmal babu shows sympathy and is ready to also teach her.Nirmal is a Professor in the local college run by Seth Jamunadas(Omprakash),who wants to wed his daughter Rajani(Pritibala).Nirmal however is not interested in this alliance.
When learning becomes difficult from the Kotha,Lqaxmi dares and escapes to the house of Nirmal, who keeps her in his house. This causes criticism in social circles as well as the college summons him to the Managing committee to answer few questions on his anti-social and blasphemous behaviour.
In reply to all charges and challenges,Nirmal declares his will to marry Laxmi to give her a social status.
Though some songs of this film were good, but the film flopped.

hullo Arunji
recently i saw the Dharam- Hema- Ashok Kumar movie “Sharafat”. that movie too has a similar story line. there they have also added the sub plot of Hema being Ashok Kumar’s long separated daughter. and being a Hema movie there were a lot of dances. probably that was the difference between the 2 movies. and i think “Sharafat” came much later to “Nartaki”

SHARAFAT was a 1970 release and Nartaki was of 1963.
I have seen Sharafat also and the similarity in major set up of the story was noted by me then also.
But I am not surprised. This type of “inspiration”,be it in the script or a Lyric or even a Tune is not uncommon in Film Industry. Tune thefts are widely publicised because songs remain in circulation for a longer time in public memory, while failed movie scripts are deliberately and with an attempt, forgotten .The movies also get spaced out considerably.

The story of Sharafat is credited to Mahesh Kaul, the s/play is by the famous Nabendu Ghosh and Dialogues are by Krishna Chander. All well known and respectable names in their field.
May be,they had thought that since Nartaki was a flop, hardly anybody would notice the similarity in script !
Laxmi became Chanda/Chandani,Rampyari was Kesarbai,Nirmal is Rajesh,Jamuna Das is Jagatram babu and Ratna is Rekha.
