Ab to jee hone laga kisi ki soorat ka saamna
Posted on: April 14, 2012
In 1950s, we had a genre of songs where a lady, alone or accompanied by other co workers carrying basket on her head would be going on her way to her work while singing a song. The hero and heroine would be at hand to listen to the song. The song in a way would express the feelings that the leading duo have for each other but are too shy to express themselves. alternatively the song may set the tone for the movie. Such a song is there in “Aar Paar” (Kabhi aar kabhi paar ),”Do Aankhen Barah Haath” (Sainya jhoothon ka bada sartaaj nikla), CID (Boojh mera kyaa naam re ) etc. I am trying to think of a name that describes such songs, but I am unable to find an appropriate descriptive name for such a genre of songs. I request our readers to help out in suggesting a name for such songs.
One can notice that Shamshad Begam is a popular choice for singing songs of this genre. Or this could be because the Shamshad Begam songs mentioned above are all from movies where O P Nayyar had composed music.
Here is another song of the as yet unnamed genre. This song is once again sung by Shamshad Begam and composed by O P Nayyar. The song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The movie is “Mr and Mrs 55” (1955). One can identify Guru Dutt and Madhubala, the lread actors of the movie who are on hand to listen to the song and identify with the contents of it. But who is the lady who lip syncs the song. Initially I thought she was Nirupa Roy, but that dioes not appear to be the case. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.
PS-She is Rooplaxmi. I thank Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh for identifying her.
Here is this extremely hummable song from “Mr and Mrs 55” (1955). I had discussed as many as eight songs from this movie and it was pointed out to me by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh that only this song from the movie was missing. so here is this song and with this now we have all the songs from this movie in the blog. It feels nice to know that all the songs of a movie have now been discussed. I eagerly look forward to that day when all the songs of several other movies will have been discussed in the blog. I think we have come a long way in this direction. There are many other movies too where majority of songs are already discussed and perhaps one or two more songs need to be discussed there. I request our knowledgeable readers to hlp point them out so that we may be able to fill these gaps.
For now, let us enjoy this wonderful song from “Mr and Mrs 55” (1955).
It has been pointed out by Khyati Bhatt that Shamshad Begam was born on this day (14th april) in 1919. So today Shamshad Begam is celebrating her 93rd birthday. We all wish her a very happy birthday on this occasion.

Song-Ab to jee hone laga kisi ki soorat ka saamna (Mr and Mrs 55) (1955) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
ab to jee hone lagaa kisi ki soorat kaa saamnaa
gori-gori goriyon ko pade na kahin re dil thaamnaa
ab to jee hone lagaa kisi ki soorat kaa saamnaa
gori-gori goriyon ko pade na kahin re dil thaamnaa
thhandi-thhandi sheet mein dekho pawan chale
dheere-dheere-dheere kaahe man mein jale
thandi-thandi sheet mein dekho pawan chale
dheere-dheere-dheere kaahe man mein jale
aajaa kaahe door jaaye
dekho tere paas aaye
gori tere saajnaa
ab to jee hone lagaa kisi ki soorat kaa saamnaa
gori-gori goriyon ko pade na kahin re dil thaamnaa
hansi-hansi-hansi gori man-man mein
khilaa-khilaa-khilaa pyaar tan-man mein
hansi-hansi-hansi gori man-man mein
khilaa-khilaa-khilaa pyaar tan-man mein
kaare-kaare nain khole
sainyaa jee ke paas dole
hamen batlaaye naa
ab to jee hone lagaa kisi ki soorat kaa saamnaa
gori-gori goriyon ko pade na kahin re dil thaamnaa
jab-jab-jab nainaa piyaa se mile
dhak-dhak-dhak moraa jiyaraa hile
jab-jab-jab nainaa piyaa se mile
dhak-dhak-dhak moraa jiyaraa hile
duniyaa naa jaan jaaye
koii pehchaan jaaye
aisaa kare raam naa
ab to jee hone lagaa kisi ki soorat kaa saamnaa
gori-gori goriyon ko pade na kahin re dil thaamnaa
ab to jee hone lagaa kisi ki soorat kaa saamnaa
gori-gori goriyon ko pade na kahin re dil thaamnaa

Here’s wishing Shamshad Begum Many Happy Returns of this Day! She has sung songs that’ll make our eyes well up—‘Peeke ghar aaj pyari dulhaniya chali..’ from ‘Mother India’, chirpy ones like ‘Kabhi aar kabhi paar laaga teer-e-nazar..’ from ‘Aar Paar’, romantic duets like ‘Mere neendo me tum, mere khwabon me tum..’ with Kishore. The list is endless…….

Atul ji,
Thank you for posting this song, that too on Shamshad Apaa’s Birthday.
A very peculiar habit of Guru Dutt was , picturising songs on extras, junior artists and less known/one time actors. Many of the popular songs are filmed on such artists. Two examples come to mind readily are that of Kumkum(Debut song),and Yasmin(Vinita Bhatt).
In the above song also the song has been filmed on ROOPLAXMI,a junior artist.
