Wo din yaad karo

Posted on: April 18, 2012

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The moment we see the caption for this song “woh din yaad karo, woh din yaad karo ” the mind somehow produced the image of Mehmood and Shobha Khote singing this. I dont know how it happened to me, because I dont remember seeing this song before. I havent seen this movie either. This song was frequently played on vividh bharati. May be my mother had told me that this was a Mehmood -Shobha Khote song, and the information was stored somewhere in the deep recesses. Similar thing happened the other day with ‘Ajahun na aaye baalma saawan beeta jaaye”. This song from ‘Saanjh aur Savera’ has roughly the same team of Mehmood-Shobha, with only S. Kalyanpur replacing Lata. It is a classical, sort of jugalbandi song. When I saw the video I knew I had seen it on T.V. in “Chhaayageet ” or “Chitrahaar”.

If there was a category called “going down memory lane”, this song “woh din yaad karo” would be a suitable candidate for this category. It is a duet song of Lata and Rafi. Written by Hasrat Jaipuri and music is by Shankar Jaikishan. I know that this movie had Rajendra Kumar as hero and heroine was Jamuna, as I have seen other popular songs of this movie. Mehmood and Shobha Khote were there to provide variety and comedy. So here in this song too Mehmood is trying to be funny and Shobha Khote is trying to be coy.

The language in the song is very simple, such songs also have an appeal of their own. One can understand and remember the words without concentrating too hard. This was a very popular song, at least I think it was, because I have heard it on radio many times in the 80’s. I was surprised that it was not posted yet. But then maybe it was waiting to me. This reminds me of a nice anecdote, which took place sometime in 1990-91. The classic movie “Gone with the wind”, with Clark Gable and Vivienne liegh playing Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara, was running at Regal Cinema at Colaba. I had booked tickets to see this movie alongwith my friends and cousin. We were four of us, one friend from Thane, another from Bombay, the cousin came with me from our home in Central suburbs. Since we were going into the city we had planned some shopping.

We were late reaching the theatre. One of my friends who has a second name of “Tarannum” has a very lilting musical voice, she asked the usher as we were entering “has the movie started ?” . Pat came the reply from the usher “No ma’am, it’s waiting for you.” As we were anxious not to miss a single frame of the movie, I was just ahead of “Tarannum” , I saw her making a face at that person. I asked her what happened. She told me the reply the usher had given and said “so haazir jawaab naa”.

Such memories of those carefree times come back to me from time to time.

Song-Wo din yaad karo (Hamraahi)(1963) Singers-Rafi, Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

woh din yaad karo
woh din yaad karo
woh chhup chhup ke milna
woh hansnaa hansaana
woh din yaad karo
woh din yaad karo
woh din yaad karo
woh phoolon ki chhainyyaan
woh mausam suhaana
woh din yaad karo

phirte thhe azaad ham to chaman mein
chaand aur sooraj hain jaise gagan mein
phirte thhe azaad ham to chaman mein
chaand aur sooraj hain jaise gagan mein
ab to yeh jeewan hai uljhan ki seema
dhadkhe mera dil ab dheema dheema
woh din yaad karo
woh din yaad karo
woh din yaad karo
woh phoolon ki chhainyyaan
woh mausam suhaana
woh din yaad karo

jab main kali thhi
tab hi bhali thhi
tab hi bhali thhi
koyi na gham thha
main manchali thhi
main manchali thhi
meri gali se teraa guzarnaa
nainon ke raste dil mein utaarna
woh din yaad karo

woh din yaad karo
haay
woh din yaad karo
woh chhup chhup ke milna
woh hansnaa hansaana
woh din yaad karo

ham to wohi hain
din woh kahaan hain
dil to hamaare
ab bhi jawaan hain
ham to wohi hain
din woh kahaan hain
dil to hamaare
ab bhi jawaan hain
dil mein hi tadpe yeh armaan saare
pyaase ke pyaase hain nadiyaa kinaare
woh din yaad karo
woh din yaad karo
woh din yaad karo
woh phoolon ki chhainyyaan
woh mausam suhaana
woh din yaad karo

Ha ha, lovely anecdote there, nahm ji, towards the end.

I think the write-ups here make the blog so special because the experience is much more than just listening to a song. You always get some information or anecdotes from write-ups. Or lovely translations of Urdu words, if you are Sudhirji. 😉

And of course the comments section of this blog is unique for the minefield of information there, thanks mainly to our one and only Arunji.

Such a treasure-trove this blog is.

Thanks for the choice of song too, nahmji. I’ve seen this film – it was a typical South Indian production. Typical = family story, lots of melodrama, misunderstanding, some weeping, a message, good songs! 🙂

This is a nice song too.

Lovely song Nahm and a lovely write up. The movie is waiting for you, haha. My son and I also like to exchange silly talk. I often call him after he has reached home from school and ask ‘Ghar Pahunch gaya?’ He usually says something like “Nahi abhi raste me hoon” in a sarcastic tone to say “Mom, how can I pick up the phone unless I am home”

I love the song ‘Ajhu na aaye balma’ and was surprised when I learnt that it had a sort of a comic picturisation. It seems like such a heartfelt love song that the hero and heroine would sing.

I just saw this lovely article on one of my favorite songs which I missed as I was travelling around the days this article appeared on the blog. Not only the song even the article is nostalgic.

The fact that Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi lip sync for Shubha Khote and Mehmood shows how important this pair was on those days.
