Ek lali ghar se chali

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
The title of the movie “Cha cha cha” is unique and one of its kind. It also indicates great songs. Four songs from the film are already posted here, which include songs like “woh ham na thhe woh tum na thhi”, “ek chameli and mandve tale” & “subha na aayi shaam na aayi”. There are more such gems still to be discovered from this movie.
I recognise the movie name and that these songs are written by Neeraj. Rafi could be heard, radio announcer need not mention it, as far as I am concerned. What had never registered was name of the music director. In fact I am positive I had not heard of or read about the music director Iqbal Qureshi, before I started visiting this blog. Same is the case with the names of Husnlal Bhagatram and Sajjad Hussain. “yeh hawaa yeh raat yeh chaandani” was the only song of Sajjad Hussain I knew, without knowing his name. Madan Mohan’s inspired song “Tujhe kya sunaaun main dilruba” is a favourite since when I dont remember. I dont recall Vividh bharati (Bombay) ever playing any of the melodious songs of Husnlal Bhagatram. The reason for now knowing these songs could be that in our household, putting the radio on early in the morning was a No No. And Radio Ceylone was only for Binaca Geetmala. We had that big wooden rectagular box Philips Radio, with separate knobs for Treble and Bass. I have seen radio of the same model in “Barsaat ki Raat” from which Madhu Bala is shown listening to the song “zindagi bhar nahin bhoolegi”.
Major part of my song listening experience is from that radio. It worked till late 80’s then it became defunct. For many years I made may mother keep it, and not throw it away. I had fun trying to find different radio stations ‘s with that radio.
The song under discussion is written by Neeraj, composed by Iqbal Qureshi and sung by Rafi. It is a bhajan, which the hero Chandrashekhar is singing in a temple accompanied by musicians. For some reason Helen who arrives in the temple as the bhajan is in progress is very angry and embarassed. She is under the mistaken(?) impression that the singer is referring to her in the song, and as the song ends, she slaps Chandrashekhar. As far as the Chandrashekhar is concerned there is no indication or expression that he has even seen Helen, let alone sing words to describe her. What could be the reason ? Has the hero lost his memory and did not recognise the heroine or has he lost his sight. In the song “subha na aayi shaam na aayi” Helen is shown as a cripple and is seen trying to reach out for the singing hero. If all of the above is happening in the film, than the Hero/Heroine are too prone to accidents 🙂 .
Rafi is in his elements in this bhajan. Though this is not a hugely popular song, it deserves to be known better. If the movie and its music were hits, then it must be a high point in Iqbal Qureshi’s career. Poet Neeraj of course had better success with S D. Burman, with films like ‘Gambler” and “Prem Pujaari”.

shyaam virah ko seh na saki woh
gup chup ghar mein reh na saki woh

shyaam vireh ko seh na saki woh
gup chup ghar mein reh na saki woh
man mein jo meethhe sapne thhey

apne munh se keh na saki woh

Bharat Vyasji was the lyricist, not Neerajsab. There were other lyricists too for this film. Iqbal Qureshi was reasonably accomplished and well known. If we do not know/remember many of these artists , it is a sort of intelectual limitation on our part. No one knows everything. No one needs to know everything. Certainly we need to apreciate the work of these gifted men and women. Arunkumar Deshmukhji may/would/should clarify the doubts and answer the queries of the writer because he does it so well.

The lyricist is ‘Bharat Vyas” and not ‘Neeraj, as pointed out in the comment above.

Same situation was carried out in Hamdard where the blind ghazal singer Shekhar sings a ghazal. Nimmi who is in audience feels that the ghazal is directed to her. Not knowing that he is blind she slaps him.
