4476 Post No. : 15980

Today, October 19, 2020 is the 25th Remembrance Day of Baby Naaz, one of the super child artists of Hindi films who has enthralled the Hindi cinema buffs with her memorable roles. She was a destitute child in ‘Boot Polish’ (1954), the young Paro in ‘Devdas’ (1955), an orphan girl in ‘Do Phool’ (1958), a teenage daughter caught in the marital discord of her parents, Guru Dutt and Veena in ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ (1959) and many more roles.

Baby Naaz’s life from her childhood days to teenager has been traumatic and unhappy. Baby Naaz’s undated interview which appeared in ‘Stardust’ magazine sometime in mid-1970 is an indication of how a child has been exploited by her mother by pushing her into Hindi films as a child artist depriving her of schooling and a good childhood to make the family’s life comfortable. In today’s world, Baby Naaz’s case would come in the ambit of child abuse by her mother. From the age of 4, she has been the bread winner for her family when she started performing as a dancer on the road side stage shows. At the age of 8, she became a child artist in Hindi films which continued till her adulthood. In this process, Baby Naaz struggled with her 3-4 shifts of shooting a day depriving her of a normal childhood.

Based on Naaz’s interview mentioned above and also on Khalid Mohamed’s article in ‘The Daily Eyes’- July 8, 2020 and an article which appeared in December 29, 2017 issue of ‘Jansatta’, the life story of Naaz has been sumarised below:

Baby Naaz, (Real name: Salma Baig) was born in Mumbai on 20/08/1944 in a poor family. Her father, Mirza Dawood Baig was a story writer who was trying his luck to sell his stories for Hindi films but was unsuccessful. He remained unemployed beside being a sickly person. Baby Naaz’s mother was an ambitious lady who pushed Baby Naaz to Hindi films as a child artist so that with her income, she can run the house and have a comfortable life. Her father was against his daughter working in the film. But due to the extreme financial problem faced by the family, he reluctantly agreed to his friend, Lekhraj Bhakri’s request to let her do a childhood role of Suraiya in ‘Resham’ (1952). Salma Baig was given a screen name, ‘Baby Naaz’.

Due to her busy shooting schedules, Baby Naaz could not attend the school regularly for which she was rusticated. For the same reason, she had no time for enjoying her childhood. On the other hand, there was constant fights between her father and mother. Deprived of a normal childhood with love and affection from her parents, Baby Naaz twice attempted suicide by jumping into a well at the age of 10 but was saved by her maid servant.

When Naaz was 12, her parents separated and she started living with her mother. About 4 years later, her mother remarried to a film cameraman and shifted to her husband’s house. Slowly, she realised that she was the sole bread winner not only for her mother but also for her lover who had now become her step-father.

Baby Naaz came into limelight as a child artist in ‘Boot Polish’ (1954) in which she played the role of a destitute child along with Master Rattan. She enacted the emotional scenes as well as comedy acts very well. The film was shown in Cannes’ International Film Festival in 1955 where both Baby Naaz and Master Rattan were tied to receive the special commendations from the Jury. With this, Baby Naaz became the most sought-after child artist and worked in a spate of films during 1954-59. Around 1960 onwards, Naaz started getting roles as a major, mostly as a character actor though in a few films, she had also got the lead roles in ‘B’ grade films.

During the shooting of ‘Mera Ghar Mere Bachche’ (1960), Naaz became close to Subbiraj, a nephew of Prithviraj Kapoor. Both of them had the second lead roles and decided to convert their closeness into a marriage. However, families from both sides were against this marriage. Their courtship continued for 5 years. It was during the shooting of ‘Dekha Pyaar Tumhaara’ (1963), in which they were in the lead roles, they got married during the outdoor shooting of the film in Pratapgarh Fort. They returned to Mumbai as a married couple.

After the marriage, Naaz felt for the first time that she had got the love and affection which she had missed in her childhood. After the marriage, Naaz had to cut down her assignments in the films due to household responsibilities. In the 1970s, she started working with Kalyanji-Anandji for their musical programmes as a compere. In the 1980s, she almost stopped acting in the films as she had become a dubbing artist for some actresses from the south especially for Sridevi.

After a traumatic childhood and teens, Naaz was happy with her married life. When the time came for her to enjoy a life of contentment with her husband and two children, a tragedy struck in her life. In 1995, Naaz was diagnosed with cancer which was on a terminal stage. She breathed her last on October 19, 1995 when she was 51.

Baby Naaz worked in around 125 Hindi films during 1952-86 of which she worked as a child artist in about 50 films. In the 1960s, Naaz got opportunity to work as a lead/second lead actor in ‘Lambe Haath’ (1960), ‘Mera Ghar Mere Bachche’ (1960), ‘Gangu’ (1962), ‘Dekha Pyaar Tumhaara’ (1963), ‘Chaar Darvesh’ (1964), ‘Rocket Girl’ (1965) and Chhaila Babu’ (1967). However, these films did not do well at the box office.

After her marriage in 1963, Naaz restricted her film appearances by choosing the films in which the roles interested her. I find that post-marriage, most of the films in which she acted belonged to big banners and under good directors like M Sadiq in ‘Bahu Begum’ (1967), Sateyn Bose in ‘Raat Aur Din’ (1967), Lekh Tandon in ‘Jahaan Pyaar Miley’ (1969), Manmohan Desai in ‘Sachcha Jhootha’ (1970), Dulal Guha in ‘Dushman’ (1972). Hrishikesh Mukherjee in ‘Phir Kab Milogi’ (1974), Asit Sen in ‘Bairaag’ (1976), B R Chopra in ‘Karm’ (1977), Basu Chatterjee in ‘Sheesha’ (1986) etc.

On the occasion of the 25th Remembrance Day of Naaz, I present a song from ‘Gangu’ (1962) which was one of her films with a lead role for her. The film was directed by Promod Chakravarty. The song is ‘kya kaha zara phir kaho’ which is a duet sung by Subir Sen and Geeta Dutt. The song is written by Prem Dhawan is picturised on Chandrashekhar and Naaz which is set to music by Kalyanji-Anandji.

“Street Singer”(1966) was directed by Chandrashekhar for Bhavdeep Films, Bombay. The movie had Chandrashekhar, Sarita, K N Singh, Manmohan Krishna, madan Puri, David, Sundar, ratna, Jeewan Kala, Keshav Rana, Agha, Tuntun, Polson, Bimal Chadha, Brijmohan, Ridku, Kundan, Sheikh, Amrit Patel etc in it.

This movie had seven songs in it. One song from the movie has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Street Singer”(1966). This song is sung by Rafi. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Suraj.

It is popularly thought that Suraj was Shankar of Shankar Jaikishan. But Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia tells us that Suraj was a pseudonym taken by Dattaram, Sebastian D’souza and Enoch Daniels. All these musicians, who were assistants of Shankar Jaikishan had only this movie to their credit under the name of Suraj.

Shankar had given music in a Marathi movie “Tee mee navhech” (1970) under the name of Suraj, and that is how this confusion about Shankar being the music director of “Street Singer” (1966) arose.

This song is picturised as a studio recording song on Chandrashekhar.

‘ग’ – गोरी नागन बन के ना चला करो॰ ॰ ॰

याद ना जाये बीते दिनों की ॰ ॰ ॰

Some solace that we have a treasure of your songs to live by. Else the memories of the past would have been a difficult thing to live with.

The 1960 film ‘Naache Naagin Baaje Been’ is turning out to be a treasure hunt. The film is packed with such wonderful melodies. I pick today’s 9th song of the series from this film.

On screen this song is performed by Chandrashekhar and Kum Kum. Kum Kum is at her bewitching best in this dance sequence, as she is in practically all dances she has performed on screen. Throughout the entire dance sequence, one does not see her let up the ‘बलखाना’ as she takes on the challenge thrown by the hero, that she should not move like a ‘नागन’ – wonderfully executed dance steps.

The song is from the pen of Majrooh Sb, and the lilting composition is from the mind of Chitragupt. Enjoy this wonderful song, and the enchanting dance that accompanies it.

[Author Note: There are three lines in the second antaraa, that have been spliced out, most likely a damaged portion of the original celluloid film. I tried to check out more video versions of this song, but apparently, this error seems to be very old, and is propagating through all available versions that I could check quickly. I then tried to bring in the audio of this song. However unfortunately, the audio version of this song from the 78 rpm recordings contains only two antaraas. The antaraa that is not present in the audio version, is the very antaraa that has the missing lines in the video. So no luck. 😦 🙂 .]

Blog Day : 3535 Post No. : 14200

Yesterday (22 march 2018), the blog was having a dot day till about 8 PM and then three articles were published just as the day was getting over, duly taking care of the “debutant” movie song as well as the YIPPEE movie for the day. Today (23 march 2018), we have had four songs discussed already, and that covers the “debutant” movie song as well as the YIPPEE movie.

But we are not done for the day. People have not noticed that we are onto another landmark. These days we mention the post number in the beginning of the post. The last article had its post number as 14199. So the next article has to be the net century post for the blog, viz post number 14200.

This century post occasion must be the most uneventful as well as the most underprepared century post. I was not sure about the song I was going to pick for the occasion till very late. I thought that I had chosen the song. But that song got changed in the afternoon. In the evening that song got changed again. This song, the 14200th song for the blog will appear at around 11 PM IST, after being finalised at about 8 PM ! In fact I discovered this song and heard it for the first time at 8 PM !

I had decided that this century post would cover a song penned by Kaifi Azmi. so the songs that I kept chosing and changing were all penned by Kaifi Azmi.

It was yesterday evening that I had decided on Kaifi Azmi as the artist to feature for the century song. So I began to research on the songs of Kaifi Azmi. I found, much to my surprise that the list of all songs penned by Kaifi Azmi is not available online, unlike the case for many other artists. Kaifi Azmi has an official site but I found that site a half hearted attempt and there I could not find what I was looking for.

So I spend my time from yesyterday evening till this evening compiling the list of all Kaifi Azmi songs that he has penned in HFM. I arrived at a figure of 351 songs from 88 movies. I was under the impression that Kaifi Azmi was on 199 in the blog and so I was hoping that this song would combine blog century will Kaifi Azmi’s 200th song in the blog. But I found that my earlier calcutaion was incorrect. Kaifi Azmi is on 189 and not quite 199. Nevertheless, now I have a fairly good idea about Kaifi Azmi’s output in Hindi movies.

I find that the music directors with whom Kaifi Azmi worked could be broadly categorised in two categories- First category was those who were lovers of urdu. Second category were those who did not have command over Hindi/ Urdu but they realised the value of a good lyricist.

In the first category, we have music directors like Madan Mohan, Ghulam Mohammad, Khayyam, Jaidev, A R Qureshy, Pt Lachchiram, O P Nayyar, Roshan etc etc. Kaifi Azmi worked with Madan Mohan in 14 movies, which is the highest number of movies for him with one music director. On the other end of the spectrum, he worked with Roshan and O P Nayyar in just one song each. The first song in the blog was sole Roshan composition that Kaifi Azmi penned. So this blog was starged with a rare song though it was not realised at that time. 🙂

The only O P Nayyar composition that was penned by Kaifi Azmi was the lilting title song of “Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi” (1966).

The other category of music directors with whom Kaifi Azmi was associated in HFM were those who had poor command over Hindi/ Urdu. They were mostly Bangla speakers. But what compositions they created with Kaifi Azmi. This category of music directors include names like S D Burman, Hemant Kumar, Kamal Mitra, Bappi Lahiri, Aparesh Lahiri, Robin, Kanu Roy, Dilip Roy etc.

For this occasion, I have chosen a song that must be regarded as a rare song on many counts. This song is a rare song per se, in the sense that I had not heard this song till now, even though this song was composed in 1970, when I as a precocious music loving kid would listen to all HFM that would get played on Radio, loudspeakers etc.

This song can also be desribed as rare because it is a club song as well as a Helen dance song. One does not associate Kaifi Azmi with a Helen dance song, but this song is very much a Helen dance song.

Though the song has dance by Helen, she does not do any lip syncing. The song is a male solo song. It is sung by Mahendra Kapoor, regarded uncharitably as poor man’s Rafi by some. The song is lip synced as a party song in Shammi Kapoor style. No, it is lip synced neither by Shammi Kapoor nor by Vishwajeet, whom many people rather uncharitably regarded as poor man’s Shammi Kapoor. the song is lip synced by Chandrashekhar who could well be described as a poor man’s Vishwajeet. That would make him poor man’s poor man’s Shammi Kapoor. 🙂 The song does have such self effacing lines as

dekh ke mujhko munh pher lete hain sab
mera chehra gareebi ka hai ishtihaar

The picturisation also shows some well known villains in attendance. K N Singh and Jeewan are present on the occasion. Jeewan seems to have understood every word of this heavy duty lyrics, going by his facial expression. 🙂

I got to listen to the song a few times in the process of noting down of the lyrics. I found the song growingon me. It is that kind of song.

So here is this unsung song as the rather unnoticed 14200th song in the blog. This century took a sedate 26 days. Hopefully we will pick up speed in the coming days and weeks.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their continued support, good wishes and encouragement that keep fuelling this musical bandwagon. Let us hope that this bandwagon keep on rolling, like the mythical perpetual motion machine.

Song-Chaand bhi hai sitaare bhi hain bazm mein (Daghabaaz)(1970) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Dilip Roy

Lyrics

chaand bhi hai sitaare bhi hain bazm mein
chaand bhi hai sitaare bhi hain bazm mein
jaane kya raaz hai kyun ujaala nahin
chhed di maine dil ki ye baaten kahaan
dil ki baaten koi sun’newaala nahin
chaand bhi hai sitaare bhi hain bazm mein

dekh ke mujhko munh pher lete hain sab
mera chehra gareebi ka hai ishtihaar
dekh ke mujhko munh pher lete hain sab
mera chehra gareebi ka hai ishtihaar
apne sar pe chita apni rakkhe huye
apne sar pe chita apni rakkhe huye
thokaren khaayin duniya ke aage hazaar
thokaren khaayin duniya ke aage hazaar
aur kisi ne bhi badhke sambhaala nahin
dil ki baaten koi sun’newaala nahin
chaand bhi hai sitaare bhi hain bazm mein

sar agar phodna hai to sar phod lo
saaya dhoondho na chaandi ki deewaar mein
sar agar phodna hai to sar phod lo
saaya dhoondho na chaandi ki deewaar mein
pyaar ka geet honthon tak aaya to thha
pyaar ka geet honthon tak aaya to thha
kho gaya aa ke sone ki jhankaar mein
kho gaya aa ke sone ki jhankaar mein
dard patthar ne seene mein paala nahin
dil ki baaten koi sun’newaala nahin
chaand bhi hai sitaare bhi hain bazm mein

raat dhalti rahi
jashn hota raha
raat dhalti rahi
jashn hota raha
log hanste rahe
koi rota raha
shukriya kis jubaan se ada keejiye
shukriya kis jubaan se ada keejiye
dil mein kaanta zamaana chubhota raha
dil mein kaanta zamaana chubhota raha
mujhko mahfil se lekin nikaala nahin
dil ki baaten koi sun’newaala nahin
chaand bhi hai sitaare bhi hain bazm mein
jaane kya raaz hai kyun ujaala nahin
chhed di maine dil ki ye baaten kahaan
dil ki baaten koi sun’newaala nahin
chaand bhi hai sitaare bhi hain bazm mein
