Song-Gore gore chaand se mukh par (Anita)(1967) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Aarzoo Lucknowi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
gore gore chand se mukh par
kaali kaali aankhen hain
gore gore chand se mukh par
kaali kaali aankhen hain
dekh ke jinko neend ud jaaye
woh matwali aankhen hain
gore gore
munh se palla kya sarkaana
munh se palla kya sarkaana
is baadal mein bijli hai
door hi rehna
door hi rehna
door hi rehna
in se qayamat
dhaanewaali aankhen hain
gore gore chaand se mukh par
kaali kaali aankhen hain
gore gore
we jinke andher hai sab kuchh
we jinke andher hai sab kuchh
aisi baat hai inmein kya
aankhen aankhen
aankhen aankhen
aankhen aankhe
sab hain barabar
kaun niraali aankhen hain
gore gore chaand se mukh par
kaali kaali aankhen hain
gore gore
be dekhe aaraam nahin hai
be dekhe aaraam nahin hai
dekhe to dil ka chain gaya
dekhne waale
dekhne waale
dekhne waale
yoon keh den hai
bholi bhali aankhen hai
dekh ke jinko neend ud jaaye
woh matwaali aankhen hai
gore gore chaand se mukh par
kaali kaali aankhen hain
gore gore

Like raja-ji, I too am surprised that this song is just making an appearance! Think ‘Anita’ and the two songs that come to mind are this one and the beautiful number by Lata…”Main dekhu jis or sakhi ri, samne mere sawariya…” Khair, Atul-ji, is baar maaf kiya! 😉
‘Anita’ may have become a hit if there was no movie named ‘Woh Kaun Thi’! Sadhana’s role was almost repetitive in ‘Anita’.

I thought LATE RAJA MEHDI ALI KHAN is the lyricist of this movie for all the songs of this movie except for one song it is ANAND BAKSHI(for the song “Hai nazar ka ishaaraa”)

Another gem from Aarzu Lakhnawi, a non-filmi ghazal sung by the incomparable K L Sehgal, merits recollection is “Ghar te tera sada na mera hai”. AS Sri AD has pointed out simple words were his strength.

Khyati ji,
I know this song, but “Tum bin jeewan kaise beeta” is the song i knew and liked from this film. It had my favourite pair of Sadhana and Manoj Kumar, had it released again i would have tried to see it. But now i find it difficult to see a whole movie on T.V. at home. Thanks for reminding of this song.

ANITA was among the last films by Raj Khosla who had a very long career in which he made all sorts of film, lastly he settled for suspence, I don’t know why. His forte was music. In all his films music was always a winner. WOH KAUN THI, MERA SAAYA, ANITA and not to forget MERA GAON MERA DESH all had great music. I would like Arunji to do a breif bio on Raj Khoslaji.
Regarding Arzoo Lucknavi, I think this lyrics are NOT by him. This is too modern to be written by him. I agree this is more likely to be Raja Mehandi Ali Khan or Anand Bakshi.

I have read all the contributions made by readers in this blog. Arzoo Lakhnavi was one of our foremost film lyricists and also reputed Urdu poet, but, unfortunately, there is no precise information available about his life. For instance, in this blog his date of birth is mentioned as 26.2.1893, but somewhere else it is given as 1874. It is said that in his middle age he was doing well as Urdu poet in Lakhnow, so he went to Calcutta in the 30s and joined there Corinthean Theatrical Company. He wrote several plays for this company and all of them were successfully staged.
Then he joined New Theatres and wrote songs for films like ‘Mukti’, ‘Street Singer’. ‘Doctor’, ‘Adhikar’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Kapal Kundla’, ‘Lagan’ and a few others. When New Theatres’ economy was in doldrums in the early 40s because of the World War II, Arzoo shifted to Bombay, like other New Theatres artists like K L Saigal, Kidar Sharma, Prithviraj Kapoor. Even Pankaj Mullick and K C Day also tried their luck in Bombay as music composers, but the music composed for films in Bombay was of a different genre. So, they could not last long there.
Arzoo wrote songs films made in Bombay like ‘Milan’, ‘Beqasoor’ ‘Raat Ki Rani’, ‘Sawan Aaya Re’ and few others. But he was now and old man, and young lyricists were then more in demand now.
Arzoo shifted to Pakistan sometime in 1951. It is said that he died there only three months after his arrival. He was a lonely man, for in Karachi he was almost like a stranger.
But the songs that he has written are immortal. Each and every song of ‘Doctor’ is a gem. Then, the non-film ghazals he wrote and K L Saigal sang are classics of light music. ‘Matwale pane se o ghata jhoom padi hai, chhati se dooan utha hai jo boond padi hai’, ‘Idhar phir bhi aana udhar jaane wale’, and many others.

The date of birth and some other details of his life are taken from the well researched book “Hindi filmon ke Geetkar” by Shri Anil Bhargava.
It is confirmed that he shifted to Pakistan after the partition, otherwise he could not have participated in the national Anthem for Pakistan contest in which he was invited.
His info while he was in Pakistan has been based on Pakistani sites.

If Arzoo Lakhnavi migrarted to Pakistanat the time of Partition, then how come that he wrote the songs of the1950 film ‘Beqasoor’, starring Madhubala and Ajit? The music for this film was scored by Anil Biswas. After shifting to Bombay from Calcutta, he wrote the songs of quite a few films. Though most of the songs of ‘Milan’ (1947) were written by Pandit Narinder Sharma, Arzoo Lakhnavi also wrote some. ‘Suhani beliya beeti jaye..’ sung by Parul Ghosh was one of them.
According to my source of information, he migrated to Karachi, Pakistan in January 1951 and only a few months after this, he died. He was then 81 years old. He wrote some evergreen lyrics which were used by filmmakers after his death. For instance, the song, ‘Gore gore chaand ke mukh par kali kali ankhen hain’ was used for the film ‘Anita’ (1967).

Tuli ji,
Not only beqasoor-50,but after going to Pakistan following Partition his songs continued to appear in films like Sawan aaya re,Duniya,Raat ki Rani and Sipahiya-all 49,Khel-50,Nakhre-51 and Mukti-60.
if he had died in 1951,how his songs came in post 51 films ?
If you want, you may see the site mazhar.dk (Train to pakistan-what happened to film people gone from India to Pakistan?),a famous Pakistani site for confirmation that he died on 16-4-1961.

Not just one book. If I remember correctly, a collection of his poems by the heading ‘sureely bansuri’ in urdu and nagri scripts, is widely admired for its language, simple and devoid of all Arbi-Persian words which are not popular in Indian masses. There might be others. He was also a successor of Jalal Lucknavi and in the capacity of ustad, he devoted enough time to correct the kalaam of new and upcoming poets. Persons 75 and above, specially in north India not only remember him but love and adore him as a poet of their own. He was responsible to rid Urdu of its foreign frills and bring it close to Hindi and played a very special role.

I had read a caption on Radio Pakistan page on Facebook dated April 13, 2013 that ‘this year April 16 will mark the 62nd death anniversary of poet Arzoo Lucknowi’. That gives his date of death as 16/04/1951. http://www.rekhta.org also gives his year of death as 1951.
After migration to Pakistan, it is stated that Arzoo Lucknowi joined Radio Pakistan at Karachi. From the website of Radio Pakistan, it is observed that the Karachi station of Radio Pakistan was opened sometime in 1950. So it is quite possible that Arzoo Lucknowi migrated to Pakistan some time in 1950-51. If so, this clarifies that he continued to write lyrics for Hindi films produced after partition up to 1950-51.
As regards Arzoo Lucknowi’s participation in writing poem for the National Anthem of Pakistan, entries from poets were invited sometime in 1950. I feel that he could have participated in 1950-51 only. It was only in 1952 the poem written by Hafiz Jullundari on a pre-set tune was selected and it was officially adopted as National Anthem of Pakistan in August 1954. Till then, National Anthem of Pakistan was played only as tune without poem on formal occasions.
The song ‘gore gore chaand se mukh par’ in ‘Anita’ (1967) was picked up from Arzoo Lucknowi’s collections of ghazals. The original ghazal has five she’rs of which only first 4 she’s have been utilised for this song with some changes in wordings. In fact, the original ghazal is written in pure Hindi.
I also note that the matla she’r of this ghazal was used by Arzoo Lucknowi while writing a song https://atulsongaday.me/2013/05/05/matwaale-nainon-waale-ke-main-waari-waari-jaaun/ in ‘Beqasoor’ (1950). So it is apparent that Arzoo Lucknowi may have written this ghazal in 1950 or earlier.

This song wasn’t posted yet? I’m noticing one trend recently. A lot of songs are being posted from movies that I’ve seen but a long time ago. When the song is posted, it revives memories of the movie. And since I have only vague memories (contrary to what some people think, my memory’s very poor :-)), I feel like seeing the movie again. I remember Anita was a mystery plot (somewhat along the lines of Woh Kaun Thi) but I don’t remember much more than that.
Now I need to see this one again.
Thanks, Khyatiji.
