Ujad gaya panchhi ab tera baseraa

“Ghar Ki Laaj” (1960) is quite an obscure movie. This movie was a Navkala Niketal Production. It was directed by V M Vyas. The movie had Sohrab Modi, Feroz Khan, Nirupa Roy, Kumkum, Sheela Kashmiri, Johnny Walker etc in it.
I have no idea how the movie fared at the box office, but it must be siad that the songs of this movie are quite nicely composed and picturised. Take this song for example. This song is a background song sung by Rafi and the picturisation shows Nirupa Roy as she hears the news that Feroz Khan, her husband is no more. Women come to her to share her grief. The song, playing in the background paints a vivid picture of what lies ahead of her in her future life as a widow and the picture is not at all pretty. She realises that her life as a widow will be hell.
Rajinder Krishan, as usual excels in his penmanship and writes extremely effective lyrics which is bound to move the listeners.
Ravi is the music director.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Ujad gaya panchhi ab tera basera (Ghar Ki Laaj)(1960) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi
Lyrics
ujad gaya panchhi
ab tera basera
ujad gaya panchhi
ab tera basera
toot gayi woh daali jis par
tu ne daala dera
ujad gaya panchhi
ab tera basera
aaya woh toofan
bikhar ke reh gaya tinka tinka
liya hai tujh se qismat ne
yeh badla haay kis din ka
yeh rang birange pankh tod de
yeh rang birange pankh tod de
apna pinjra ab tod de
aayi woh gham ki raat
na hoga jis ka koyi savera
ujad gaya panchhi
ab tera basera
saath chhod gaya saathi tera
reh gayin us ki yaadein
saath chhod gaya saathi tera
reh gayin us ki yaadein
chup ho ja
aa aa aa
chup ho ja
teri kaun sunega
dard bhari fariyaadein
haar singaar mita de apna
aa aa
teri khushiyaan ho gayin sapna
aa aa
haar singaar mita de apna
teri khushiyaan ho gayin sapna
chhoti si ik jaan ko gham ke
toofanon ne ghera
ujad gaya panchhi
ab tera basera
raaton ki kya baat
tere ab din bhi ho gaye kaale
raaton ki kya baat
tere ab din bhi ho gaye kaale
door teri parchhaayin se bhi
hatenge duniya wale
koyi na dekhe toota taara
aa aa
dukhiya se sab karen kinaara
bairi hua ujaala
ab to dega saath andhera
ujad gaya panchhi
ab tera basera
toot gayi woh daali jis par
tu ne daala dera
ujad gaya panchhi
ab tera basera

Have you noticed how everyone is wearing black in this scene? Now-a-days they show everyone wearing white in a similar situation. The reason is that it was difficult to shoot “white” in B&W era. Even in ordinary shots the artists were given yellow or blue clothes which used to come out as white. Actual white was not shot. Hence in shots depicting death related events, the mourners were given black.
Another comment I would like to make is that this song resembels “chal ud ja re panchi” from BHABHI.

It is an interesting point about black showing depicting mourning in Black and white movies.
I also noticed the resemblence of the lyrics with the “Chal ud ja re panchhi” song. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist in both the cases.
