Chala dildaar wai wai

“Duniya Na Maane” (1959) was a Vishwadeep Production movie. It was directed by V Avdhoot. The movie had Pradeep Kumar, Mala Sinha, Bhagwan, S. K. Prem, Sheikh Mukhtar, Sulochana, Daisy Irani, Mohan Choti, Rajen Haksar etc in it.
I have discussed one song from this movie. Here is another song from the movie. this song is sung by Lata and chorus. it is picturised on Helen and others as a dance song. so that makes it one of the earliest Helen songs. And as can be noticed, here she sings in Lata’s voice, and not in her more usual voice of Asha Bhonsle.
Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Madan Mohan.
The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt who was quite intrigued by the words uttered by the chorus in this song. any idea what these words ( ho ya raffi raffi ya raffi ) mean ?
PS-Sudhir jee now informs that the words are ‘ho ya-rabb rabb ya-rabbi’

Khyati ji,
Gosh, what an absolute favorite song you have unearthed. This song has been with me in my memory from ages ago. Thanks for bringing it up for posting here. Helen is oh so enchanting in this song, absolutely ravishingly delightful.
The chorus line that sounds like
‘ho ya raffi raffi ya raffi’
actually is
‘ho ya-rabb rabb ya-rabbi’
As you may be familiar, ‘rabb’ is an Urdu word, and a name for God.
‘ya-rabb’ is an invocation to Him – in the same tone as ‘Oh God’, or ‘Haaye Allaah’.
The formation of this line is (e.g. ‘ya-rabbi’ at the end) is most likely the poetic license invoked by the lyricisit-music director team, to match the flow of the melody. 🙂
Thanks again
Sudhir

Sudhirji,
I knew that I was “messing up” with the chorus part. I pay same attention to chorus part as the main. Sabhi mil ke jo gaate hai to achha lagta hai. Kaash roj baroj (everyday life) ki zindagi mein hum sab ye bhi kar paate. Ek saath sur milake, taal milake chal sakte.

At the age of 12 years, Helen started as a chorus dancer in Awara (1951) and had songs filmed on her in Kasturi (1954) and Mayur Pankh (1954), but the major break came with Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu from Howrah Bridge (1958). So, she had been dancing for almost 8 years and by the time this movie came up in 1959, she had worked in more than 70 movies.
