Jaao na sataao rasiyaa

Posted on: April 28, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The mention of the title “Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja” would immediately bring to mind the 1993 film starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. But no, we are talking about an earlier incarnation of this title, well almost 32 years earlier. Even though the year was 1961, and even though the lead pair of Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman were well established in their careers, yet this film, ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ (1961) failed to make an impact on the box office. And now, when one mentions this name, people do not readily connect to the earlier film. In other words, it has become an obscure entity, that many people do not remember now.

Some years back, almost 20 years back, I came across this film in VHS format at an Indian video rental store in Michigan, USA. Being an avid fan of Dev Anand, and of the old movies, I immediately picked it up, and wondered about the newness and the obscurity of this title. Later when I watched this film, I could make out the reason why this film got the response that it did. The storyline did not flow well and was unconvincing. HS Rawail could have done much better with the concept of this film – the transformation of a sinner into a good person, at the hands of extreme circumstances in life. The situations seem contrived, as one can see in this song also. Good effort and good talent – all going waste.

But then, let us talk about music. As always, films that remained obscure, or even films with lot of promise that tanked on the box office, almost invariably carried music that creates legends. Over a period of years, the film, its title, its cast of actors is all forgotten. But then, when a song from the film plays, it is always a surprise – say, what film this song is from?

The same is the case with this film also. And be it so, for the music is created by that successful team of Shankar-Jaikishan, Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri – a team that was at its peak of popularity in the early 60s. So far, only one other song of this film has made it to this blog – “Tum To Dil Ke Taar Chhed Kar, Ho Gaye Bekhabar” , an absolutely wonderful two version song in the voices of Talat Mehmood and Lata Mangeshkar. And there are more really good songs sitting hiding behind this film title.

The film is produced under the banner of Rahul Theatre, India and is directed by HS Rawail. (I think the banner name Rahul Theatre comes from HS Rawail’s son’s name – Rahul Rawail). Music creation is by the team mentioned above, and this song is penned by Shailendra. The star cast is impressive and includes Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, Sunder, Sahira, Heeralal, Manorama, Randhir, Shiela Kashmiri, Indira Bansal, Jagdish Raj etc. The storyline is built around a pilgrimage travel, going from Calcutta to Gangasagar in a large boat. Dev Anand plays the role of Chhagan, a petty thief, and he is on the boat to seek opportunities for stealing from the pilgrims who might be carrying money and gold for pooja offerings. He is actually following a Seth and his family, with whom he has seen some gold ornaments. Waheeda is a dancer of some importance, and she is also traveling on the same boat with her matron (Manorama) and other companions. Dev Anand plays the role of a brash and bullish young man, who gets smitten by the beauty of Waheeda Rehman, and decides to fall in love.

As is apparent from this clip, he forces his way into Waheeda’s cabin and demands to see a live performance of a dance song. As I mentioned earlier, the situation and the dialogue seem to be non-natural, and are contrived. But aside from that, the song itself is a gem of a semi-classical creation by Shankar-Jaikishan, and is wonderfully rendered by Asha Bhonsle. Enjoy.

chaand gayaa, taare gaye, gayee milan ki raat
paaon padoon mein jaao piyaa, chhodo hamraa haath

(The night, it is coming to its end)
The moon is setting
And the stars are beginning to fade away
Our night of tryst is passed
I pray at your feet, o my dear
Please let go of my hand
And go your way

jaao na sataao rasiyaa, tum sang jaagi saari rainaa

Go away
Bother me no more
O please, I have already spent
A sleepless night with you

kabhi dil mein bal khaaun mein, ghadi bahr phir pachhtaaun mein
ke chhal gaye tere meetthe bainaa

My heart, it vacillates
One moment it flips with joy
And the next moment
It overflows with regret
O why
O why was I misled by your sweet words

sajan mein sochoon khadi khadi, kahaan mori bindiyaa jaaye padi
kidhar gayo kajraa, pheeke nainaa

(My presence, it is all ruffled)
And I pause and wonder
Where did I drop the red bindi from my forehead
And kohl, its missing from my eyes
And my eyes, they look lost and uncared

balam hamraa jiyaraa dhadke, kahin hamen dekh na len ghar ke
bhed ye jag pe khul jaaye naa

(Shush and go away now)
O dear, my heart flutters
Fearing others at home
They may see us together
And this secret would then
Be known to the world
O go away
And bother me no more

I remember seeing this movie when I was a very young boy. My only recollection is that reasonably famous song “tu ne dil ke taar chhed kar”. This is a very nice song too (hearing it for the first time). It was lovely to see the bit of dialogue before the song. Always great to see Dev-Waheeda together, they had lovely chemistry! Thanks, Sudhirji.

Sudhir ji,
The songs from this movie are nice and your posts are interesting as all the others too. I also have watched this on VHS back then in Oz. Caught up on quite a lot of oldies. Nowadays internet gives us many old movies but occasionally not the full version. You know when they say 2hrs or a little bit longer that it is not -literally- the complete picture(crooked smile, I do not know the sign for that)!
I was recently watching the dance sequence by Waheeda ji. The tune for that song is familiar and has been bugging me. Do you recognize the original song?

Thank you Atul ji and all the contributors for a site with these lovely old
MELODIOUS songs. I may not comment but I follow your site.
