Ye umar hai kyaa rangeeli

Posted on: May 1, 2012

Among all the regulars of this blog who discuss songs from Hindi movies, I may be the one who has seen the least number of movies, especially during one’s best movie watching days (viz during 8-12 years of age) :).

And now I do not feel like watching movies even though I have hundreds of VCDs of these movies lying around with me. Watching the movie now appears a waste of time to me. In any case, watching these movies now is no substitute for being able to watch these movies during one’s childhood.

When I talk knowledgeably about movies these days, then my knowledge of these movies is most of the time based on the picturisation of the songs and the subsequent comments on the writeups of the songs. Then I also read up the reviews of these movies on other blogs etc.

Armed with all this knowledge, I feel that I know enough about “Professor” (1962) even though I have not seen the movie. I know, I know that I should see this movie. I will search for the VCD of this movie which is gathering dust somewhere and I will try to play it.

I know the story of the movie alright. Shammi Kapoor needs a job and the job available required an old teacher. Shammi Kapoor masquerades as an old teacher and gets the job. He finds Lalita Pawar, his employer, falling for his old man charms. When he is not wearing his old teacher’s hat, he sheds his disguise and flirts with Kalpana.

Here is a song from “Professor” (1962) where Shammi Kapoor is in his old man’s disguise. Kalpana and her sahelis, obviously in the prime of their youth boast that the world belongs to them. Shammi Kapoor tells them that the world belonged to him too in the past. The girls mock him calling him “Buddhaa” :).

All these exchanges take place in the form of a song ofcourse. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar and Manna Dey. Yes , Shammi Kapoor, who sings in Rafi’s voice when he is without disguise decided to disguise his voice and go for Manna Dey’s voice instead :).

I had a whale of a time ogling at Kalpana and her sahelis. All salwar clad, most of them looked quite well built. I cannot identify most of them, but I feel reasonably confident that Bela Bose is one of the sahelis. The blue kurta clad lady (whom a YT comment singled out for her looks) appeared to me to be Ameeta. Knowing my inability to identify the ladies of those days, I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify them so that I may be able to ogle at them more knowledgeably :).

Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan. When I listen to the music, I can find some similarity with the “Gumnaam” (1965) song “hum kaale hain to kyaa hua dilwaale hain” which came three years later.

I have always believed that all characters in Hindi movies, no matter what their age and no matter how they look (and not just the good looking lead actors)have the right to fall in love and sing romantic songs. Why just characters in Hindi movies, even real life people, no matter how they look and how old they are have the right to fall in love and sing romantic songs. That way this song stands for the rights of buddhas to fall in love. I am sure we will need this song when we become buddhas :).

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Today (1st may) also happens to be the 93rd birthday of Manna Dey. I take this opportunity to wish him a very happy birthday and many happy returns of the day.

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

ye umar hai
kya rangeeli
ye nazar hai
kya nasheeli
pyaar mein khoye khoye nain
hamaara rom rom bechain
hamaari hi zamaana hai
haay
ham par thhi jawaani
aur duniya thhi deewaani
kisi ke ham hi thhe dildaar
koi karta thha hamse pyaar
hamaara bhi zamaana thha
haay
ham par thhi jawaani

ye matwaali
chanchal aankhen
dekhen sapne
paagal aankhen
guzra bachpan
chaayi bahaaren
guzra bachpan
chaayi bahaaren
chaal huyi mastaani
ae ae ae ae
ye umar hai kya rangeeli
ye nazar hai kya nasheeli
pyaar mein khoye khoye nain
hamaara rom rom bechain
hamaara hi zamaana hai
ye umar hai kya rangeeli

dam hai jabtak
oho
jeewan apna
hmm hhmm
arre jaan hai jabtak
phir
sab kuchh apna
waah re budhhe
dil ki baaten
sun lo ab to
dil ki baaten
sun lo ab to
aankhon ki jubaani
o ho ho ho
haay
ham par thhi jawaani
aur duniya thhi deewaani
kisi ke ham bhi thhe dildaar
koi karta thha hamse pyaar
hamaara bhi zamaana thha
haay
ham par thhi jawaani

jeewan kya hai
hanste rehna
man maujon mein
behte rehna
chhup ke baithho
maane na ham
chhup ke baithho
maane na ham
baaten wo puraani
ae ae ae ae
ye umar hai kya rangeeli
ye nazar hai kya nasheeli
pyaar mein khoye khoye nain
hamaara rom rom bechain
hamaari hi zamaana hai
ye umar hai kya rangeeli

hamne maana
ham pe nigaahen
achcha
dil to apna
chhe chhee
phir bhi jawaan hai
aha buddhe
yoon na dekho
dil to dekho
yoon na dekho
dil to dekho
chhodo ye naadaani
oh ho ho ho
haay ham par thhi jawaani
aur duniya thhi deewaani
kisi ke ham bhi thhe dildaar
koi karta thha hamse pyaar
hamaara bhi zamaana thha
ye umar hai kya rangeeli
ye nazar hai kya nasheeli
pyaar mein khoye khoye nain
hamaara rom rom bechain
hamaari hi zamaana hai
hamaara bhi zamaana thha
hamaari hi zamaana hai
hamaara bhi zamaana thha
hamaari hi zamaana hai
hamaara bhi zamaana thha
hamaari hi zamaana hai
hamaara bhi zamaana thha

I identified Aruna, Sheila ramachandran on the basis of Gretaji(Memdidi)`s Photo Gallary.

Therefore the credit should go to MEMDIDI
