Mere pyaar mein tujhe kyaa milaa

A seashore with sand beaches and sun shine with some outcroppings of rocks and trees of palms or coconut is a dream destination for a holiday. And if the climate is moderate and not too hot, one can just keep looking at the blue gold and green black hues and not bother to disturb anything, not even the waves.

Another view to look at a beach is endless sand and sand dunes with the waves lashing the shores with not a tree or anything else in sight. Infinity of that vision when you can see absolutely nothing but the horizon, and even that is not clear as where the earth is meeting the sky. How terrifying it can be dawned on me when we had gone to a beach at Alibaug some years ago. My son was two or three years old. It was low tide and water had receded far. It was rainy season, so the sky, sea and the wet sand every thing looked grey. I just wanted to go upto the water and get our feet wet. But my son just didnt want to come. When I tried to pick him up then I realised that from his height of two feet or so, all he was able to see was the greyness and nothing in front of him.

The murky grey water of the sea was not visible to him at all. It must have seemed like nothingness and empty to him. So it was a natural reaction of not wanting to venture out to nothingness.

This song from the film “Suhaagan” has a similar infinite beach. Guru Dutt is singing this song at home and then he goes to this deserted beach and and tries to drawn himself in the sea. He is saved by Feroz khan who manages to prevent the suicide. The song “mere pyar mein tujhe kya mila” was there is my short list of Madan Mohan songs to discuss. I had not seen or heard this song before but saved the link just as a Rafi/Madan Mohan song.

When I heard it for the first time, it sounded so depressing, Then after seeing the video and listening to song again,it has grown on me. And today it is reminding me of another song “mujhe raat din yeh khayaal hai, tu nazar se mujh ko giraa na de” by mukesh.

This pathos laden song is sung superbly and with feeling by Rafi Sahab. Lyrics are by Hasrat Jaipuri and the music as mentioned above is by Madan Mohan.

Song-Mere pyaar mein tujhe kya mila (Suhagan)(1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

mere pyaar mein tujhe kyaa mila
tere dil ka phool na khil sakaa
mere pyaar mein tujhe kyaa mila
tere dil ka phool na khil sakaa
mere pyaar mein tujhe kyaa mila

tera rang roop ujad gayaa
yeh haseen chehra utar gayaa
na bahaar hai na singaar hai
na koyi khushi na qaraar hai
mujhe apne aap se hai gila
mere pyaar mein tujhe kyaa mila

raheen dil ki dil hi mein hasraten
baneen zehar pyaar ki raahaten
tujhe khaa gayeen yeh khamoshiyan
bani choodiyaan teri bediyaan
ke ghamon pe kuch bhi na bas chalaa
mere pyaar mein tujhe kyaa mila

mere dil yehaan se tu chal kahin
mujhe koyi jeene ka haq nahin
main karoonga teraa hi khaatma
tere saath apnaa bhi khaatma
meraa aaj hai yehi faislaa
yehi faislaa
yehi faislaa
yehi faislaa

That is a beautiful write up Nahm. Alas, I am in the office and cannot hear the song right now. I will surely try to listen to it this evening.
