“Pagla Kahin Ka” (1970) was produced by Ajit Chakravorty and directed by Shakti Samanta. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Sunder, Helen, Prem Chopra, Madhumati, K. N. Singh, Murad, Manmohan Krishna, Madhavi, Mohan Choti, Viju Khote etc in it.
Shammi Kapoor played a different role in this movie. Instead of playing a larger than life role where everything falls in place for him, here Shammi Kapoor played the role of a mortal who finds the going tough for him. Playing the role of a helpless man did not go down well with the audiencs who wanted to see him in him in his trademark roles. Though the movie was critically acclaimed and this movie has been acclaimed as one of the best performances by Shammi Kapoor in his acting career, the movie flopped at the box office and with this Shammi Kapoor’s days as a hero of Hindi movies came to an end.
The music of this movie, like most movies of those days, was memorable and continues to be so. As many as four songs from this movie have been discussed in the blog in the past. Here is another song from this movie.
In India, mentally challenged people have often been treated with insensitivity. They have traditionally been described as “paagal” and their hospital is called “Paagalkhana”. The fact that it is an illness and such patients deserve to be sympathised has been by and large lost on majority of people. In Hindi movies, mental asylums have often been shown as places populated by comedians.
I have not seen this movie, but I suppose that this movie takes a sympathetic look at the mentally ill. At least that is true for this song. In this song, Shammi Kapoor, playing a “paagal”consoles a fellow inmate. A “paagal” too has feelings and if his feelings are hurt, then his pain is just as real as that of other healty people. The lyrics of this song as well as the picturisation of this song underlines this fact.
The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Song-Ae mere dil yahaan tu akela nahin (Pagla Kahin Ka)(1970) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics(Provided by nahm)
na ro tu yahaan aise
pagla kahin kaa
museebat ko apne
gale se lagaa le
tere gham ki duniya
tujhe de gaye hain
yahaan se wahaan
rooth kar jaane waale
ae mere dil yahaan
tu akelaa nahin
aur bhi hain bahut
gham ke mare huye
ae mere dil yahaan
tu akelaa nahin
aur bhi hain bahut
gham ke maare huye
ae mere dil yahaan
tu akelaa nahin
har qadam par yahaan
aur har mod par
gham ki ek daastaan
keh rahi har nazar
keh rahi har nazar
kitni be-chainiyaan
reh ke khaamosh bhi
de rahi hain sadaa
bin pukaare huye
ae mere dil yahaan
tu akelaa nahin
pyaar jis ne kiya
uss ko paagal kahaa
apni duniyaa mein yeh
zulm hotaa rahaa
zulm hotaa rahaa
saikdon baar yeh
khel khelaa gayaa
saikdon baar aise
nazaare huye
ae mere dil yahaan
tu akelaa nahin
aise insaan bhi
maine dekhe kayi
maut jin ke liye
ae ae
zindagi ban gayi
jin ki aahon se hai
goonjti yeh fizaa
jin ke aansoo gagan
ke sitaare huye
ae mere dil yahaan
tu akelaa nahin
aur bhi hain bahut
gham ke maare huye
ae mere dil yahaan
tu akelaa nahin

True ‘Pagla Kahin Ka’ did have a very un-Shammi Kapoor Shammi Kapoor. Sadly, like in most movies, here too there were a lot of ‘comedy scenes’ involving the mentally ill inmates. By the way, this movie fared quite well thanks to the lovely songs, and good acting by Shammi, Asha Parekh and Helen.
As for Shammi’s decline it was due to his weight problems.
