Nazar mein bijli badan mein sholey

“Puraskaar” (1970) was produced and directed by Ram Kumar. This movie had Joy Mukherjee, Sapna, Fariyal, Abhi Bhattacharya, Farida Jalal, Mahendra, Nigar Sultana, Helen, I. S. Johar, Bipin Gupta, Ram Kumar etc in it. This movie may not be remembered today, but it was quite an interesting movie as Memsaab found.

After being introduced to this movie thanks to Memsaab’s review, I have discovered that this movie is full of some awesome songs that sadly failed to get popular, mainly because the movie flopped at the box office.

Two fantastic songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the third song from this movie.

This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and it is picturised on Joy Mukherji and Sapna. From the picturisation it is difficult to make out if it is a teasing song or a romantic song. The expression of Sapna gives nothing away as she appears to be an actress who would give Vimmi a run for her money in being wooden faced (or being “patthar ki moorat”, as a “Hamraaz” song would describe her.

Mahendra Kapoor has sung the song nicely but the picturisation of this song could have been better. But then we need not complain, seeing that this movie was meant to contain “every story cliche known to man and then some” (Memsaab’s words).

The song was written by S H Bihari and music was composed by R D Burman.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Nazar mein bijli badan mein sholey (Puraskaar)(1970) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

nazar mein bijli
badan mein shole
mila hai dilbar
nayi ada ka
sitam hai zaalim
ka muskurana
hai is ka ghussa
ghazab khuda ka
nazar mein bijli
badan mein shole
mila hai dilbar
nayi ada ka
sitam hai zaalim
ka muskurana
hai is ka ghussa
ghazab khuda ka

tumhaari tamanna mein
ae jaan-e-jaana
main nafrat ke yeh ghoont
peeta rahoonga
tumhaari qasam hai ke
main zindagi bhar
yeh hi aarzoo le ke
jeeta rahoonga
tumhaari yeh zulfon ko
chhoo ke hi aaye
kabhi to koyi jhonka
idhar bhi hawa ka
nazar mein bijli
badan mein shole
mila hai dilbar
nayi ada ka
sitam hai zaalim
ka muskurana
hai is ka ghussa
ghazab khuda ka

agar yeh jawaani ki
shokhi na hogi
to kis ko yeh duniya
qayaamat kahegi
kisi ke mitaaye se
kab mit saki hai
mohabbat rahi hai
mohabbat rahegi
bala se yeh adaayen
meri jaan le len
mujhe to in adaaon se
pyaar hai bala ka
nazar mein bijli
badan mein shole
mila hai dilbar
nayi ada ka
sitam hai zaalim
ka muskuraana
hai is ka ghussa
ghazab khuda ka
nazar mein bijli
badan mein shole
mila hai dilbar
nayi ada ka
sitam hai zaalim
ka muskurana
hai is ka ghussa
ghazab khuda ka

What can one say about Sapna? I saw her in ‘Kahin Din Kahin Raat’ where she was paired with Biswajeet. It was a thriller with fantastic songs by O P Nayyar. The producer would have saved a lot of money had he used a cardboard cutout of any beautiful young woman as the heroine. And I bet it would’ve acted much better than Sapna! Poor Helen too was in this movie and she had a meaty role that she did full justice to!
Can you really blame Sapna and Vimi? If they were bad actresses why did the producers continue shooting for their movies unless there was some sort of ‘hanky panky’?

Ah I heard the phrase Hanky panky after a long time. Lovely Mani.

Vimi was a headstrong Punjabi girl who first rebelled against her parents when she married Shiv Agarwal, a Marwari industrialist’s son. But a second shock was in store for her in-laws. Though married and a mother, Vimi was so beautiful that she attracted attention despite keeping to herself at a party in Calcutta. Music director Ravi took the initiative, invited Vimi and Shiv to Bombay and threw a party to introduce her to B. R. Chopra. And so, she became the heroine of ‘Humraaz’.

Against the wishes of her in-laws, but supported by husband Shiv Agarwal, she entered films. The Agarwals disowned the couple. As Sunil Dutt sang to her (Na Sar Jhuka Ke Jeeo, Na Munh Chhupako Jeeo) the enchanting image of Vimi won the viewers’ hearts. The film was a hit but Vimi seemed to be more interested in what she was wearing and her make-up rather than in the character.

Producers slowly heard how she had to give take after take before giving a passable shot. Husband Shiv too was found to be ‘interfering’. Vimi did a few more films (‘Vachan’,’Patanga’, ‘Aabroo’) but the money was peanuts for the couple who was used to an expensive lifestyle. Finances from their family had long back dried up. The couple split.

The husband returned to his family and Vimi started living with Jolly, a dubious film maker. The wooden but beautiful actress was no use to the producers, and she found solace in alcohol – cheap alcohol which ultimately killed her. She had even taken to prostitution to make money to quench her ‘thirst’.

When she died, there was not enough money to even cremate her. She was taken on a ‘thela’ by Jolly and a couple of other well-wishers to the Santacruz crematorium. But she is still remembered for her fragile, out-of- the- world beauty.

This song, rather uncannily, sounds like Shammi Kapoor’s Nazar Mein Bijli Ada Mein Shole from Prince (1969). https://atulsongaday.me/2011/03/27/nazar-mein-bijli-adaa-mein-sholey/

Not only is the opening line very similar, the tempo, tune & beat is also alike. Furthermore, acting-wise JM is seen trying to do a Shammi (as were many other heroes in that period of time), while Mahendra Kapoor is seen trying to do a Rafi (can’t blame him).

JM’s brother Deb Mukherjee was marketed as Shammi’s clone & tried to ride on Shammi’s immense popularity in those days. Needless to say, he failed miserably.

Mahendra Kapoor was peddled as Rafi’s alternative, he did achieve some success but never touched the great heights Rafi had.

i completely agree with Atif saab.
even i felt the opening tune resembled “Nazar Bijli Ada Mein sholay”. & is everyone dead sure this song was a RD Burman creation? sounds more like something from SJ basket
