Ae chaand sitaaron

Posted on: May 9, 2012

“Daaera”(1953) is an obscure movie by now. This movie was a Kamal Pictures Production. It was produced and directed by Kamal Amrohi. The movie had Nasir Khan, Meena Kumari, Kammo, Pratima Devi, Roopmala, Jankidas, Kumar, Nana Palsikar, Nisar Ahmed Ansari etc in it.

The songs of this movie are equally obscure. I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. Here is another song from the movie.

This song is sung by Talat Mehmood. Kaif Bhopali is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jamal Sen.

Only the audio of this song is available but it can be safely guessed that the song was picturised on Nasir Khan.

On the occasion of Talat Mehmood’s death anniversary (9th may), here is this song as a tribute to Talat Mehmood.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Ae chaand sitaaron (Daaera)(1953) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Kaif Bhopali, MD-Jamal Sen

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

ae chaand sitaaron
ae chaand sitaaron o o o
khaamosh nazaaron
ae chaand sitaaron
main woh hoon ke
tum bhi na mere
saath guzaaro
main woh hoon ke
tum bhi na mere
saath guzaaro
ae chaand sitaaron

ghanghor
andheron mein kiyaaa aa
maine basseraa aaa
woh raat hoon
jiss raat ne
dekhaa na saweraa aaa aaa
taqdeer ki bikhri huyee
zulfein na sanwaaro
ae chaand sitaaron
ae chaand sitaaron

sookhe huye
dariyaa kaa hoon
veeraan kinaaraa aaa
jiss mein koyee kashti hai
na toofaan
na dhaaraa aaa aaa
ab tum na meri laash ko
reh rehke pukaaro
ae chaand sitaaron
ae chaand sitaaron
khaamosh nazaaron

In my schooldays, Radio Ceylon had played such a pivotal role in our lives. Every morning, we used to be enthralled by beautiful songs from Hindi movies. I used to love one song from ‘Daaera’, “Devta tum ho mera sahara..” a beautiful duet by Rafi and Meena Kapoor ( I must confess I’m not sure about the female voice)..

It is not Meena Kapoor,it is Mubarak Begum.

Atul ji,
DAAYERA-1953 is surely the most forgotten, least known and a very mournful film by Kamal Amrohi. After the runaway success of MAHAL-1949,Kamal Amrohi(KA) was obsessed with the theme and a thought that what Madhubala did in Mahal,Meena Kumari could do better in Daayera.
Daayera was a ‘subkuch’ KA film.He not only produced and directed it,but also he wrote the Dialogues and S/play also, besides making it under his own Banner-Kamal pictures. The role of Meena k. was written such that there was no scope for the Hero(unlike Ashok K. in Mahal),and hence Nasir Khan was taken.Though the brother of Dilip K.,Nasir was a real B grade actor, who, even if he strived hard, could not have overshadowed Meena K.
Actually the film was very effective with its haunting scenes and ‘darawana’ background music. The overall impact of the movie was successful in creating a mystery atmosphere, but unfortunately, comparisons with Mahal were unavoidable. In 1953,Madhubala was a greater star than Meena K. ,who blossomed in the 60s and 70s mainly.
Meena K was Sheetal,a young lady, married to a very old and ailing husband(Nana Palsikar),who looks more like her father. There are some scenes where this has been emphasized too.To vent her emotions, she has an affair with Shravan Kumar(Nasir Khan).
The film depicts the death of Nasir khan, falling off a balcony, while Meena K watches it.This affects her mind and she can not come out of it,finally succumbing to the emotions and committing suicide by falling off the balcony, just like her lover.
After this, the viewer is so much confused about the story(at least I was),that whether there is a reincarnation or repeat scenes of the Hero/Heroines was not clear.
Anyway, those days, the reviews in the papers and magazines were also unfavourable and very soon the film went off the theatres.
I remember,Meena K.,in an interview once had said ‘ I would like to forget that I acted in a film called Daayera.’
It sums it all !

Thank you arunji for this information. I dont know if they were trying to make a “hat ke” film, but after watching “devta tum hi ho” song recently, I just could not figure out what they were trying to portray. It is really horrible. It just didnt add up. There is another song in the movie and i believe its 4-5 minutes long. Only thing that they show is just bunch of lights (roshni created during festivals) and just decided to freeze the camera there and play the entire song! If songs are these bad, no need to ever watch this movie, especially after reading ur thoughts on it.

There were many mysteries about Daayera, the first was why was this film made.
In this film a sort of World Record was also attempted. There was a close-up shot of Meena Kumari and it remained on the screen for
6 minutes and 30 seconds ! Try watching a still image on any screen for 2-3 minutes and you will realise what must have been the viewer’s condition in the theatre(with all doors closed and nowhere to go).
Poor Jamal Sen,the MD,with the help of his younger brother,Roop sen, tried to alleviate viewer’s discomfort in the cinema hall by giving some melodious songs.

I wonder if this movie has anything to do with:

which in turn inspired this:

(Even though its based in a different setting, and is kinda Sci-Fi types).

As Raja ji has confirmed, the Meen kumari’s husband’s role is indeed done by Kumar and NOT Nana Palsikar.

I guess one man’s food is another’s poison. 🙂
I happened to recently see this movie and I quite liked it. 🙂
Yes, it is slow – but I don’t mind a slow movie if it can involve me enough. And, with all its misery, this one did.

The story is a bit different from what Arunji has said above. 🙂 I’ll try to summarise it.

A very young Meena is married to a very old man (Jankidas, I think. Not Nana Palsikar, for sure). He is suffering from a chronic disease. They’ve moved newly into town and happen to be tenants of Protima Devi (mother of Nasir Khan), who lives next door. Nobody knows they are husband-wife, everybody thinks they are father-daughter. Nasir sees Meena on the balcony one day and falls head over heels for her. He becomes hellbent on marrying her. She is however totally loyal to her husband and informs Nasir accordingly. When Nasir’s mother and Jankidas (family counselor) take up Nasir’s case with Jankidas, they get a rude shock when they realise that he is Meena’s husband. Nasir is heart-broken, they try to fix his alliance elsewhere. There is another twist in the story (I will not reveal all of it).

I wouldn’t call it a great movie – certainly now. But it has Kamal Amrohi’s stamp on it, and I like that. But if you’re looking for an elaborate storyline or any humour or fun, forget this movie! 🙂

Sorry, in my above comment, the family counselor is not Jankidas but Nana Palsikar.

Ok, last comment on this post. 🙂
I’m not sure the husband is Jankidas. It could be a person called Kumar. His name figures prominently in the credits but I don’t know how Kumar looks. He is not even in memsaab’s artist gallery. 😦

M Kumar is the one singing this song:

Thank you very much. Then I think it is indeed Kumar who plays Meena Kumari’s husband in Daera.
