Tum apni yaad bhi dil se bhula jaate to achcha thha

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

‘Yaasmeen’, a film from 1955 is well known for some wonderful gems coming from the pen of Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and the music composition by C Ramchandra. The film has ten songs out of which four are already represented on this blog, including the evergreen iconic rendering of “Bechain Nazar Betaab Jigar” by Talat Mehmood, and “Mujh Pe Ilzaam e Bewafaai Hai” by Lata Mangeshkar. Here is the fifth offering from this film – another iconic song that would qualify for the tag ‘how come this song was not posted earlier’.

‘Yaasmeen’ is produced and directed by A R Kardar, the famous Mogul of Hindi cinema. This film is remembered as the breakthrough for its poet, Jaan Nisaar Akhtar. The runaway success of the music of this film, made popular the name of Akhtar Saab, and established him as a poet of repute in the Hindi film industry. Although the lyrics credits were shared with Tanveer Naqvi, the contribution of Akhtar Saab is significant, in that he wrote nine of the ten songs of this film, with Tanveer Naqvi contributing just one song in the film.

The film is produced under the banner of Musical Pictures, Bombay. The main star cast includes Suresh, Vijayantimala, Jayant, Sham Kumar, SN Bannerjee, Maruti, Rajan Haksar, Mumtaz, Rashid Khan, Amrit Rana, Habib, Wahid, Bakshi, Nawaab, Baajid Khan etc. On screen, the song is performed by Suresh and Vijayntimala. This particular creation is a sad song of separation. The video clip starts with Suresh finding a ring in his deserted pavilion. From the scenario, it is apparent that he was expecting to see Vijayntimala, but instead finds this ring, as a parting token. Realizing that she is gone, he breaks out into this song, lamenting her departure.

As is with many other songs on the screen, the duet is being performed by two stars who are physically in different locations, and yet the words, and the melody is being shared as if they are right next to each other.

In the video clip referred, it appears that the sound track is being played back at a speed that is greater than normal, and hence the rendering seems somewhat unnatural. I have also included below, a link for the audio version of the song, that is apparently the better sounding version.

Enjoy this wonderful gem of a song from Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, tuned to a wonderful melody by C Ramchandra. A lovely creation.

tum apni yaad bhi dil se bhulaa jaate to achhaa thhaa

(As you have gone away)
O wish that you would erase
Your memories also from my heart

ye do aanso lagi dil ki bujhaa jaate to achhaa thha
O wish that these tears from my eyes
Could douse the burning in my heart

mere armaan bhi le jaate, meri hasrat bhi le jaate
nazar se chheen kar apni haseen surat bhi le jaate
andhere aur in aankhon mein chhaa jaate to achhaa thhaa

Wish you would take
My aspirations and my desires away
And wish that you would take
The image of your beautiful face
Out of my eyes and my memory
O wish that the shadows in my eyes
Would become deeper and darker

mere dil ki mohabbat ka yakeen kab tum ko aaya thhaa
jahaan sau zulm dhaaye thhe jahaan dil ko mitaayaa thhaa
mujhe bhi apne haathon se mitaa jaate to achhaa thhaa

Never had you trusted
The truth of the love in my heart for you
A hundred merciless deeds
My heart suffered at your hands
O wish you would have
Wiped away my existence
With the very same hands

mera dil pher de meri nishaani pherney waale

O please
Return my heart to me
Same as you have returned my keepsake

jo mumkin ho to lautaa do meri aahen mere naaley
hum apne dil ka khoyaa chain paa jaate to achhaa thhaa

If you can
O please return to me
All my sufferings, my tears and my sighs
O wish I could redeem
The peace and comfort of my heart
(That I lost to you)

Atul ji, as I’m a ‘johny come lately’ to this blog, I don’t know which are the three songs you’ve discussed in the past. My favourite song from ‘Yasmin’ is the very very soft..”Aankhon me sama jaao, iss dil me raha karna…” Have you discussed this song? What makes this song so beautiful is the tune with hardly any instruments intruding into the song. Hats off to C Ramchandra! And for the major part of the song, there are sharp close ups of the lovely young Vyjyanthimala and the handsome Suresh. I wonder what happened to Suresh. Can anyone give me more info about him?

Menon ji,
SURESH (real name Nazim Ahmed) was born in Punjab on 13-11-1928.Initially,he did child roles in films of 41/42 and then he became a Hero.He was a favourite of A.R.Kardar and featured in many films of Kardar productions, like Dulari,Jadu,Deewana and Yasmine etc.
He was very handsome and worked with most leading ladies, specially Suraiya,Geeta Bali,V.Mala and Madhubala.Around 1955 his market value started sliding and films became rare.
He tried his luck by going to Pakistan also and acting there in 2 films Do Kinare and Eid.he was not accepted there.Back in India,he made his biggest mistake of becoming a producer in 1975 and launched Ganga aur Sooraj.the main villain,Anwar hussain was paralysed and was replaced with kader khan. The film got delayed and was released finally in 1980.It flopped miserably.
Suresh was now a broken man and very poor too.He died unsung, unwept and unnoticed in Bombay 14-7-1979.
