‘Begaanaa’ is a 1963 production from the banner of Sadashiv Chitra, produced and directed by Sadashi J Rao ‘Kavi’. The main star cast includes Dharmendra, Supriya Choudhry, Shailesh Kumar, Madhavi, Manorama, Tarun Bose, Chandrima Bhaduri, Badri Prasad, Rajan Haksar, Babloo, Agha. This is one of the earlier films of Dharmendra who had made his debut with Arjun Hingirani’s film ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’ in 1960.
This film, however, is notable as the debut Hindi film for the music director duo Sapan Jagmohan. Jagmohan Bakshi had already made is appearance as a singer in the 50s. Readers will recall his duet, “Dekho Maane Nahin Rootthi Haseenaa. . .” with Asha Bhosle, from the film ‘Taxi Driver’ (1954) filmed on Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik. And another of his famous duets is with Mohammed Rafi, “Ghir Ghir Aayre Badarwaa O Bhaiyyaa” from Kishore Sahu’s film ‘Hamlet’ from 1954. He teamed with Swapan Sengupta, and the first film which the duo composed music for is the Punjabi film ‘Jija ji’ (1961).
‘Begaanaa’ is their first Hindi film for which they composed the music. In a career that lasted well into the 1990s, Sapan Jagmohan composed music for 50 plus films, some in regional languages also. Besides independent music directors, the duo is also known as a the music assistants to RD Burman for almost two decades. As assistants to RDB, their notable contributions are recognized in the film ‘Sholay’ (1975), especially the title track and the mouth organ tune that is played by Amitabh Bachan in the film. As per records, their last films are ‘Ghar Ka Kanoon’ (1995) and ‘Kumwaari Maa’ (1996). Jagmohan Bakshi passed away in 1999.
One gem of a song from this film, a melancholic solo by Mohammed Rafi, is already posted on this blog – “Phir Who Bhooli Si Yaad Aayee Hai” . Here is a second very pleasing offering from this film. It is a duet sung by Lata and Usha Mangeskar. The lyrics are written by Shailendra.
Only the audio clip is available, and so it is not feasible to comment on the picturization of this song. From the music arrangement, it appears to be a dance song performed by two or more ladies. The lead dancers would be performing to the voices of Lata and Usha. The song is apparently influenced by the rural folk music. The mood is very lively, a lilting foot tapping melody.
The lyrics tell about young hearts experiencing love for the first time. Two friends are telling about how someone has entered the heart, and what are the new emotions and moods they are now experiencing. The words by Shailendra are so very descriptive, and in three stanzas, he has so graphically captured the condition of a new heart facing the onslaught of love for the first time. And the music is so uplifting, it will make you feel like getting up and prancing a few steps. A lovely song which I am sure you will enjoy.
aaye gayo, morey mann bhaaye gayo
dil mein samaaye gayo raam, balam moraa
jiyaa uljhaaye gayo re
Oh, he simply walked in (into my life)
And my heart has taken a fancy to him
He just blended into my heart,
And has bewildered the emotions therein
My dear one
raaton ki neend gayee, din kaa chain gayaa
kahin bhi jee naa lagey, lagaa ik rog nayaa
The nights now are sleepless
And the days are restive and impatient
Nothing catches my interest any more
Seems like a new malady has overtaken me
chaandni raat jaley, morey chandaa ke binaa
aa ke mil jaa re sajan, aur taare na ginaa
phaagun aaye gayo re
The moonbeams at night
Feel like a burning fire
When he is not with me
O dear, please come and meet me
I have counted enough stars in the nights
See, the colorful season of spring is here
raat din un ke hamen, sapne aane lagey
meetthi meethi si agan, dil mein sulgaane lagey
Now I dream of him
In night, and in daytime
And a pleasing agony
Begins to burn in my heart
donon ke jee bhi nayaa, geet jab gaane lagey
baat jab badhne lagi, log samjhaane lagey
kaun bharmaaye gayo re
Both the hearts are now singing a new song
And then things came to pass
That now others dissuade me
And ask
Who is it that has smitten your heart so
har ghadi jaane lagi, chaand taaron pe nazar
bhoolne hum bhi lagey, jaani pehchaani dagar
All the while, my eyes, my thoughts
Stray amongst the stars in the sky
And I am beginning to forget familiar pathways
apni duniyaa hai nayee, kis ko duniyaa ki khabar
din-b-din badhtaa gayaa, dil pe chaahat ka asar
papihaa gaaye gayo re</font.
Seems as if I am in another new world
So who cares for this world
Day by day, this love is
Ensnaring this heart more and more
All the while the papihaa bird
Is merrily singing its songs
