Dukhiyaare naina dhoondhen piyaa ko

Today (25 june) is the birth anniversary of Madan Mohan. We in this blog already have discussed as many as 278 Madan Mohan compositions, which work out to about one third of all Madan Mohan compositions in Hindi movies. Today gives us a reason to add up a few more songs to this tally.
Here is a lovely semi classical song from “Nirmohi” (1952). This song, which is based on raag Gaud Sarang (as per YT entry) is sung by Lata. Uddhav Kumar is the lyricist.
Only the audio of this song is available, but going by the starcast of this movie, it is almost certain that the song was picturised on Nutan.

I was expecting an informed write up on Uddhav Kumar in this blog. He was a highly talented lyricist who has written some of the finest melodies in the fifties. It was not easy to find opportunities to write lyrics in the golden decades of films, but Uddhav was such a good lyricist that he never experienced dearth of work. He came in the lime light with Ham Log by Zia Sarhadi, the doyen of Hindi lyricists. It speaks volumes for his talents that he was chosen by an eminent lyricist to contribute to one of his own films and he did not disappoint him. Later, he wrote in a number of films and some of his songs became extremely popular. I have a faint idea that he too had a connect with I PTA but I am not sure. I shall keep scanning this blog with a hope to come across a note on the lyricist who I treat with lot of respect.
