Hindi movie music of the golden era was enriched by a large number of music directors. They include not only the well known names but also those who struggled to get assignments and got to work in very few movies.
We in this blog have discussed songs of several talented but out of work music directors.
Sardul Singh Kwatra, whose death anniversary falls today (6 july) was one of those music directors who got far less movies as a music director than what his talent merited.
Here is a song from “Pilpili Sahab” (1954). This lesser known song from this forgotten movie is sung by Shaminder and Lata. Shailendra is the lyricist.
This movie was a family affair. It was a Kwatra Films production. H S Kwatra, brother of Sardul Kwatra was the producer and director of the movie. The movie had Shyama, Raja Kapoor, Sunder, Pran, Mehmood, Agha, Shyama, Lalita, Mumtaz etc in it.
I heard this song for the first time only jusy now and I was quite overwhelmed. This is a song that deserves to be much better known among music lovers.

Sardul Kwatra composed music for about two dozen movies, mostly Punjabi movies.
Here same film…one of my favorite….
VERY VERY VERY nice duet of Mohammed Rafi and Meena Mangeshker.

SHARDUL SINGH KWATRA was only the 2nd SIKH Composer in Hindi films,after S.Mohinder.
Shardul kwatra(SK) had a very handsome ,well built,6 feet tall attractive personality.No wonde the young Lata had a crush on him,once(ref-Raju Bharatan’s book).
He first gave music in Ek Teri Nishani-49.Then came Jalte deep-50 and Shagan-51.The Kwatra family established a production company-Kwatra Art productions and their first film was Goonj-52 with SK’s music.in this film he used Suraiyya,Hawaiian Guitar and violin to create melodious songs.
SK gave music to 22 Hindi films and 13 Punjabi films in which Kode Shah-53 was the most popular.
Some of his Hindi films are Pilpili saheb,Teesmar khan,Son of Alibaba,Char Minar,Kala Chor,Air Mail,Dekha Jayega,Mirza Sahiban,Lady Robinhood(his best music film),Gypsy girl,khiladi,Deccan queen-62,kala chashma,Chandrashekhar Azad,accident-65 etc.Then there was Daku Maan singh in 71 and last film Khel muqaddar ka-1980.
After this he migrated to USA and died there on 6-7-2005 in San Hose.
In the late 50s SK’s name also was in news for the quarrel he had with Mohd.Rafi.Kwatras had taken the First floor of Rafi’s bungalow in Bandra,Bombay,on rent for few months.When they were asked to vacate they refused and the matter went to police,kwatra complaining that Rafi’s family tried to kill him.It went to court.Finally,the bigwigs of the industry settled the matter.

See, now that makes sense to me…few years back I read somewhere that he owe some money to Rafi saab. But SK always denied that.
After moving to America, he tried to enter in American music industry…but no luck.
Also, he married to some American lady later end up in divorce. Than he had live-in-girl friend but that relationship didn’t work out, he turn into heavy drinking. He died suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, neurological problems, renal disease + dire financial situation.
