Chheen ke dil kyun pher lin aankhen

Today (31st july) is the day when Rafi left for the heavenly abode, and the world of Hindi movie music was no longer the same again.
It is difficult to believe, but it has been 32 years already without Rafi. How time flies !
Rafi made his debut as a playback singer in 1940s. The singing style of that time was almost diametrically opposite to his singing style. And as such Rafi was hardly getting many assignments at that time.
It was in 1949 that Rafi’s voice was first noticed on a big scale in the “Dulaari” (1949) song Suhaani raat dhal chuki. With this song Rafi arrived on the Hindi movie playback singing scene and from then onwards he stayed the undisputed number one male playback singer of Hindi movies for the next two decades.
Here is a song from “Chaandni Raat” (1949). This song is sung by Rafi and Shamshad Begam. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad, one of the earlier mentors and backers of Rafi.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)
chheen ke dil kyun pher lin aankhen
jaan gaye hum jaan gaye
laakh adaayen dekhne waale
yeh bhi ada pehchaan gaye
hum hain tumhaare chaahne waale
hum ko na tum barbaad karo o
dil ne kiya thha dil se jo waada
yaad karo haan yaad karo
haaye zara si baat ka bolo
aaj bura kyun maan gaye
aankh mein shokhi
dil mein muhabbat
o o o o
dil hai kahin nazren hain kahin
aise chale ho bhed chhupa kar
jaise hamein maaloom nahin
tum ko qasam hai
ab na sataao
aaj tumhen hum maan gaye
chheen ke dil kyun pher lin aankhen
jaan gaye hum jaan gaye
ho na kahin
badnaam mohabbat
dekho dekho
zubaan se
kuchh na kaho
kuchh na kaho
pyaar ka naghma hum ko suna ke
lootne waale tum hi kaho
tum ne hamein pehchaan liya to
hum bhi tumhen pehchaan gaye
chheen ke dil kyun pher lin aankhen
jaan gaye hum jaan gaye

Beautifully worded and composed song. Heard this after a long time. This song reminded me of the days in early 70s when I used to play my 78 rpm gramophone record of this song quite often.

Yes, like Sadanandji said, this wonderful Rafi/Shamshad Begum duet takes me back to the days of 78rpm records and gramaphones.
Mohammed Rafi was not only gifted with a heavenly voice, he was also such a simple, decent human being. He lacked the pompous airs of a successful playback singer. I think of him as an angel sent down to earth.
I’m not too sure but he debuted in ‘Shahjahan’ where he sang alongside the great K L Saigal himself in a qawwali “Mere sapnon ki rani…” Rafi’s voice, even then, stood out with its clarity and mellifluousness. We’ll never ever have a human being like Rafi in our movies. Even after so many years after his early death, he lives in our hearts. Forever.
