Mat ro maata laal tere bahutere

“Bandini” (1963) was a movie based on pre independence days when Indian was still under British occupation. “Bandini” (1963) is the story of Nutan who is serving jail sentence in a jail. The jail also has a freedom fighter who is to be hanged. This song is sung by the freedom fighter as he is being led to the gallows.
This song is sung by Manna Dey. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.
I am unable to identify the actor lip syncing the song. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify him.
This song is a poignant reminder of the fact that India, who is celebrating her 65th independence day today (15 august 2012) is free thanks to the sacrifices made by many unnamed and unheralded freedom fighters.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
mat ro maata laal tere bahutere
mat ro maata laal tere bahutere
janambhoomi ke kaam aaya main
bade bhaag hai mere
mat ro maata laal tere bahutere
ae ae
mat ro
ho o o
hans kar mujhko aaj vida kar
janam safal ho mera
ho o o o
hans kar mujhko aaj vida kar
janam safal ho mera
rota jag mein aaya
hansta chala ye baalak tera
mat ro maata laal tere bahutere
ae ae
mat ro
dhool meri jis jagah teri mitti se mil jaayegi
ho o o
o o
dhool meri jis jagah teri mitti se mil jaayegi
sau sau laal gulaabon ki
phool bagiyaan lehraayegi
mat ro maata laal tere bahutere
ae ae
mat ro
ho o o
kal main nahin rahoonga lekin
jab hoga andhiyaara
ho o o o
kal main nahin rahoonga lekin
jab hoga andhiyaara
taaron mein tu dekhegi hansta ek naya sitaara
mat ro maata laal tere bahutere
ae ae
mat ro
phir janmoonga us din jab
azaad bahegi ganga
maiya
aa aa aa
phir janmoonga us din jab
azaad bahegi ganga
unnat bhaal himalay par
jab lehraayega tiranga
mat ro maata laal tere bahutere

Ever since i saw this movie on TV years back and this song it has been permanently there in my heart.
Salute to Shri.Shailendra ji who wrote such words!
A great composition by Dada Burman and Manna Dey Sahab .. (i have not words to express my feelings )
One can feel these words…. The song brings tears, inspires us, fill us with patrotism, shake our hearts, and reminds us of the great souls who sacrifice their lives for us – for our freedom..
Today on on the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat singh, Shaheed Rajguru and Shaheed Sukhdev, we pay our tributes… !! Jai Hind !

Thank you so much, Atul-ji & Khyati-ji for this wonderful song! I’m afraid I can’t identify the freedom fighter being led to the gallows. But, I think the woman is actress Dulari. There’s another song from ‘Bandhini’ that always manages to bring tears to my eyes. It’s that song..”Ab ke baras bhej Bhaiyya ko babul…” sung so poignantly by Asha Bhosale.
