Few people today remember this movie called “Ahsaas” (1979). This movie was a quicky movie produced by G P Sippy in the interim period between his two big movies viz. “Sholay” (1975) and “Shaan”(1980). “Ahsaas” (1979) was produced with newcomers with names that no one had heard of. Who were the lead pair in this movie ? Frankly no one seems to recall including me. It was one of those few movies that I had watched first day first show ! And what a disaster of a movie it was. Now others who are into watching first day first show (FDFS), like for instance Santosh Ojha, watch blockbusters like “Trishul”. On the other hand, it is my misfortune to watch dud movies like “Ahsaas” (1979) and “Shalimaar” (1978) in FDFS. Bahut naainsaafi hai.
“Ahsaas” (1979) incidentally was an A certified movie. Those days a 21 year old was considered adult whereas I was not even 18 and looked like 12. But such things did not matter much in the place where I was growing up. And I could not believe my luck when I actually managed to get a ticket for the FDFS and even managed to enter the movie hall without being questioned.
Being a youngster, I was full of preconceived notions. I knew that the movie was a teenage love story. So I was expecting it to be something heartwarming on the lines of say “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye” (1978) which I did not watch initially for several weeks, but once I did, I ended up watching that movie five times.
When I watched “Ahsaas” (1979), I quickly realised that the movie was made with a lead pair who were extremely lucky to be signed up for a movie like this. They did not seem to possess the qualities that are required for movie actors. How they managed to get selected to play the lead roles of this movie remains a big mystery to this day which has not yet been satisfactorily explained to this date.
Perhaps G P Sippy knew that he needed some big names to help sell the movie. So he had signed up a host of big names as guest artists in this movie. And curiously enough, the posters advertised these names instead of the names of the lead actors and very conveniently omitting to mention the fact that these big names were only making guest appearances. This movie was thus advertised as featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Bindiya Goswami, Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Amjad Khan, Bindu, Simi Garewal, Rakesh Bedi, Chand Usmani, Sunder, Asha Potdar, Simple Kapadiya, Leela Mishra, Kiran Vairale etc. Now tell me where are the names of the lead pair in this lengthy list !
The movie had a ridiculous story line and discussing it would be a waste of effort.
Since I did not like the movie, so other things, viz songs of this movie also suffered. And I was not alone. And now I find that the songs of this movie are listed as rare songs ! That too when the movie is a “recent” movie by the standards of this blog.
Those who have not watched the movie and who have just heard the songs have not been subjected to the letdown that I felyt and as a result they have a more favourable opinion of the songs of this movie.
Prakashchandra, who obviously did not watch the movie, this being an A movie and all, only watched the posters of this movie and he listened to the songs of this movie. He has sent me the lyrics of this song from “Ahsaas” (1979). Those days when he only listened to the audio of this song, he imagined it to be a seduction song sung by the leading lady for the hero. Now that he has watched the audio, he is suprised to find that it is Simple Kapadiya, playing an older lady, who is seen seducing the hero of the movie in this song.
I had watched the movie and as a result this song too, but I had forgotten all about this picturisation too, though I recall this song as being perhaps the most popular song from this movie at that time. Now when I watch the picturisation of this song once again after more than three decades later, I realise that this song is a fantastic song. It is perhaps one of the finest seduction songs in Hindi movies. But it has ended up becoming a rare song because this movie flopped big time.
When one listens to the other songs of this movie, one realises that the movie had some superb songs it which few people are now aware of. And when Bappi Lahiri decided to compose Chaalu songs, those songs became hugely popular. So why should one blame Bappi Lahiri for the deterioration in the quality of Hindi movie music in the subsequent years.
Simple Kapadiya (15 august 1958- 10 november 2009) was the younger sister of Dimple Kapadiya. She left for her heavenly abode quite young at the age of just 51. She was born on Indian independence day and it was her birthday anniversary two days back. Prakashchandra in fact had sent me the lyrics of this song for that occasion. But seeing how many songs I discussed in the last two days(20 songs), I was unable to discuss this song on those days.
The song is picturised on Simple Kapadiya, Parwez (the lead actor) and Dina (the lead actress). I have become aware of the last two names thanks to Prakashchandra. He must be one of the very few people who can identify the lead actors of this movie. 🙂
So here is this song, a forgotten gem, that would have become an all time classic had it featured in a hit movie. But make no mistake, this song deserves to be ranked among the best songs in the careers of Asha Bhonsle and Bappi Lahiri both.

On our family tour to Tirupathi shrine(On the occasion of my elder brother` s thread ceremony at Tirupati temple)we stopped at Mysore to have our lunch, at then famous Dasprakash restaurant .
In front of that Hotel one big Movie theatre was there(If my memory serves me right, I remembered its name “Prabha”.At that time I must be in my primary school.) I saw in front of that movie theatre, a big poster of This “Ahsaas”Movie showing a young hero in shorts and heroine also short pants on beach side.
I don`t know the exact reason why that hand- painted hoarding was registered in my mind.(The reason must be my obsession with Hindi movies at that time, because as children we are strictly allowed to watch only Amithabh`s movies or Children movie or religious movies, that too once in a 3 months)
After many years, I think I heard this Ahasas song through radio.Then onwards whenever I listened this song, I always think that this song must have been picutrised on teenage hero and heroine at beach
side .
Then via internet When I got a chance to see the video clip of this song – Eventhough I like Simple kapadia , but the picturisation ????? is a bit letdown for me.
But this song still rules my heart.
(My parents and 2 brothers still make fun of me,by calling “Poster Crazy Guy”)
That`s my loo….oo…..ong story of this song.

I Knew this Parwez Jamal guy in my growing up years. he was a PG at my neighbours’ place (which was famous as the place for all FTII graduates who were struggling to get a foot hold in the industry. i heard from my mom that subhash ghai also lived there & then there was this Premdra who acted in “Holi Ayi Re”) he used to play good cricket & badminton. he was a Kashmiri. & when he got this movie we could see him strut around but with us he was very humble. we were happy for him when we saw him in the Bajaj Bulb ads those days– he appeared in the line “Ab Bilkul Buudha Hoon Goli Kha Kar Jeeta Hoon ” segment. then when after the 1st movie Ahsaas he didn’t get any for quite some tym, thats when he did ads & worked at some ad agency. then he thought being Sunjay Dutt’s friend in “Rocky” was good enough for him. & he got stuck in that slot for years. last i heard abt him was when he married a friend of mine and moved out of our building (as apartments were called then). then i lost touch as we were always shifting btw cities.

This Premendra was there in another movie called Duniyaa kyaa jaane opposite Bharathi(south). (one Asha Bonsle song was there picturised on Bharathi and Premendra in Duniya kya jaane)Am I right??? Whether Premendra played Mala sinha`s son in Holi Aayee re ???

The period of the Sixties was a popular one for filmmakers, after end of 70’s just had no good story…rich girl/poor boy/triagles/caste…etc…was gone…now the story puts the valued on material possessions and some times just. ‘Twisted Seduction’.
Here no surprise that Dimple’ little sister Simple was eager to followed her big sister’s footsteps in acting. Some what she does look like her sister, but no match with Dimple for sure.
I have never seen her on screen. So this was interesting to me.
Ashaji is singing like a canary bird, more with the ‘up lifted, voice.

This song was quite popular in its time – I remember I had made up my version of the first line “kuchh khaane ko dil karta hai, kuchh peene ko dil karta hai”. 🙂
I haven’t seen this movie – and from the looks of it I haven’t missed anything. 🙂 Like Atul says, it was an A movie – so the question of my watching it at time of release did not arise (Unlike Atul, A was pretty much A in my area. :-)). And I did not even have any particular urge to watch it.
I liked that other song in this movie very much – “sapnon ke sheher”. I guess this is one of several movies which are best not watched but whose music is very much worth listening to (that too maybe only audio, not even video). 🙂

Thankfully this movie I did not see FDFS. (The other one, Shalimar, I did see FDFS, at Liberty in Nagpur). Ahsaas has some truly wonderful songs. I could have liked this song as well, but one of my friends in the hostel would sing this day in day out in his terrible, terrible voice! I have hated this otherwise good song ever since!!

Guys, you all seem to have got the wrong idea about this movie. Granted, the lead pair was a disaster but the movie was a coming of age movie and the problems of adolescence. Just check the song Jo Na cchote hain na bade badi mushkil mein woh pade (the lyrics, not necessarily the picturization) and you will get an idea of the movie. The female lead was Dina, daughter of the star Ramola from the earlier years of Bollywood. The hero’s name is lost in history. It was the usual boy meets girl, they love each other, parents get in the way but eventually true love triumphs. The songs were brilliant, Kitne Ranjhe Tujhe, and Sapno ke sheher by Kishor at his peak, and Rootho na, besides the song you mention. This was probably Bappi’s best work if you DISCOunt his synthesized fare. I was 18 and looked 15 or so when I saw this movie, but the songs do stand out.

Premendra played Mala Sinha’s brother in Holi Aayi Re. The role of Mala Sinha’s son was played by Shatrughan Sinha. Incidentally the actor in Ahsaas (and the Bajaj bulb ad) was Benjamin Gilani and not Premendra. Gilani also acted in Alaap and Devta.

No the actor featuring in the song is Parvez (with Simple Kapadia)and not Benjamin Gilani, I am 100% sure,
Benjamin Gilani played Farida Jalal`s Lover in Alaap and in Devta he played as Shabana Azmi`s Lover. You can identify Benjamin Gilani in one of Lata Song from “Devta”->”main to kaare badrwaa se haari”

Benjamin Gilani was not there in “Ahsaas”. I had seen the movie first day first show in my town. In any case, Benjamin Gilani was an “oldtimer” by then whereas the hero of this movie was a debutant.

You were not the only victim of this film,even I saw this film(in Patna) and repented like anything.I went there to pass time,instead I passed out-almost !
AHSAAS-79 like films raise many questions like,why people think that they can become actors?,why is there a need to produce such films?,and above all why some people see these films ?
Anyway,this film was written,s/pla and dialogues were done by Surinder Suri,in addition to Directing this film.Surinder Suri also did the same thing(i.e.Story,dialigues,s-play and Direction) with another weird film called ” RIKKI TIKKI TAVI” in the same year.This was a songless film with music by some Arthur Sintake.
This was a film involving two love stories and 3 friendly couples.Sudershan Sahni(Shammi Kapoor) wants his son Raju to marry his friend’s foreigh returned daughter,while Raju(Parvez) is in love with Dina,which is not liked by his father.
Parvez has acted in several films like beimaan,jugnu,Rocky,Mera Jawab,& saal baad,Jaane Jigar,Badshah,Johnny,Corporate etc.Afterwards,he became a Production manager in the industry.
Raju and Dina elope and go and stay in a remote village.They are helped by another love bird pair of Harry(Rakesh bedi) and Poly(Kiran Vairale).There is a third love pair of Kicky and Chakku (What strange names).
After few monthe Dina is pregnat.meanwhile their parents trace them to the villege etc etc.
The music to this film was by Bhappi Lahiri with assistants like Anil,Arun-who later became composer pair themselves and Bansari lahiri.The songs were reasonably good,the best being the above song.
There were many Guest artists in this film.One may wonder why so many.The reason is simple.The financers are never ready to support a film where only unknown actors are there.To satisfy them such tricks of guest artists is used in the industry.this happens with many films.Amjad khan has done the role of Dina’s father.
