“Daastaan” (1950) was a Musical Pictures Production, which was a joint venture of A R Kardar and Naushad. The movie was directed by A R Kardar. The movie had Suraiya, Raj Kapoor, Murad, Al Nasir, Veena, Suresh, Protima Devi, Shakila, Banerji, Lakshman, Surinder, Baby Anwari, Swartha, Krishna Kumar etc in it.
As many as seven songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the eighth song from “Daastaan” (1950).
The song is sung by Suraiyya and chorus. The song is picturised on Suraiyya and others as a dance song on a stage. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad. The picturisation shows Suraiyya and others performing in front of a King who has presumably captured Suraiyya and is forcing her to entertain him. So our hero, Raj Kapoor enters, unnoticed by all but the audience, and replaces the person falling the king. As the song comes to an end, he single handedly defeats all the guards and rescues Suraiyya.
But that comes later. The song itself is quite fascinating. If one just listens to the music without knowing the details about it, then no one will ever imagine that it is a Naushad composition. It is as western a composition as any. And I can guess that lots of midnight oil must have been burnt to compose this song which is so much different from the usual Naushad compositions.
