Lovely greetings for a wonderful Eid celebration today, to one and all.

Today, we celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzaan. Today is the first day of the month of Shawwaal, the tenth month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. Ramzaan, which is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar, is observed as a fasting period by Muslims who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset. Fasting during Ramzaan, helps in developing self-control and is a way of getting closer to Allaah. It is historic record that the Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) in the last ten days of the month of Ramzaan. Today’s festivities mark the end of the fasting period.

The festival of Eid ul Fitr is synonymous with joy and thanksgiving. The term ‘Eid’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘oud’, which means ‘the return’. This signifies the return of this festival of happiness each year. Today marks the beginning of three days of celebrations and merriment. Everyone will wear new dresses today, and at homes, the ladies prepare sweets for sharing with all who visit to meet and greet the family on this day. The spirit of this great festival knows no religious boundaries.

This wonderful song of Eid celebration is from the 1943 film Najma. It is a Mehboob Productions film, produced and directed by the famous Mehboob Khan. Although not the first film directed by him, this film is the first one to be produced and directed by him under the banner of Mehboob Productions. The star cast includes Ashok Kumar, Veena, Sitara Devi, Murad, Agha, Yaqub, Rajkumari etc. The music composition is by Rafique Ghazanvi and the lyrics are penned by Aarzoo Lucknowi.

The song is depicts the happiness of joy of today’s celebration within a family household. A large gathering of friends and visitors can be seen. The clip begins with the view of the special offering of Namaaz (prayers), and then it shows the men-folk greeting each other with the customary embrace. The elderly gentleman can be seen placing ‘eidi’, a gift of money, in the hands of the younger ones. Then follows this wonderful composition, performed by a group of young girls, who are presumably the family and visiting friends in the household. The lady of the household is seated on a ‘dewaan’, and watches the performance with a smile on her face.

The words of the song are a simple and a wonderful expression of warmth, friendship and a feeling of close fellowship between all who are present for the occasion. Pray that this spirit of joy and sharing remains with all of you, all through the year. Be well, and do well. Amen. 🙂

Children and grown up alike
All celebrate this joyous occasion today
Together singing songs of happiness
The gentlemen meet and greet their ladies today

The seniors in the family
Bow down to greet the youngstes
And dear friends will embrace
With arms around each others shoulders

HAPPY EID TO ALL.
Mehboob productions was established in 1942 independently, fulfilling the long cherished dream of this Movie Mughal. His start of filmi career with work as an Extra-doing the role of one of the 40 Thives of Alibaba,in the film “Alibaba and 40 thieves”-1927 produced by Imperial films co.-stopped at the owner of a leading studio, making a new begining in life.
mehboob was having a communist leaning from the begining, but it was not an open case.Slowly he turned to softer version to the nehruvian Socialism. When he founded his studio,he needed an emblem, which he got done from his artist friend Altaf hussain. You will see that in the emblem too there are the famous communist “Sickle and Hammer”.
The Catch line of mehboob productions” Muddai lakh bura chahe to kya hota hai, vohi hota hai jo manzoor-e-Khuda hota hai” was voiced by his friend,Singer/Music Director RAFIQ GAZNAVI.Here it is-

His first film NAJMA was a Muslim social. Why did mehboob choose a Muslim theme as his first film ? That is because, basically mehboob was a person of Modern thinking and was aware of the shortcomings of his community, which he believed were inhiting their growth.in almost all his films, one can make out,he tried to bring this point that any social segment must change as per the time requirement.
Najma was a 1943 film, but in 1947 he made a film ELAN which was blatantly against some of the customs of his social segment. The film was so pro-change that it was banned for some time fearing the ire of fundamentalists.
NAJMA-1943 was produced and directed by Mehboob. The music was by his close friend Rafiq Gaznavi (described as “The Ladies’ Man” by Saadat Hasan manto in his book) and the Lyricist for 10 songs was Anjum pilibhiti and 2 songs(including the above) was by Arzoo Lacknovi. The story,s/play and dialogues were by Agha Jani Kashmiri-the younger brother of actor Nawab kashmiri
The story revolves around Dr.Yusuf(Ashok Kumar) who is in love with Najma(Veena) daughter of a rich Nawab in Lucknow circa early 20th century.Due to the difference in the monetory and social status of both lovers, they can not marry each other and they get married to other partners in due course of time. This does not diminish their love.It is not acceptable to Mukarram(Kumar) husband of Najma and he goes to murder Dr.Yusuf.On his way,he meets with an accident and brought to yusuf’s hospital.Dr.Yusuf,true to his orofessional ethics does an intricate operation and saves Mukarram.
Peace is established in both families and they realise that one must accept the fate….etc etc.
Six singers were used for 12 songs in the film Ashok kumar, parul ghosh,Mumtaz,Sitara,Amirbai and Rafiq gaznavi.

Eid Mubarak to all!!!

What a lovely Eid song this is. I’m hearing it for the first time – and really like it a lot. And as usual, Sudhirji’s write-up is a pleasure to read.

And of course, Arunji’s comments. I’ve seen Elan (1947) – Mehboob laments the social mores of the time which spoil the rich child resulting in him becoming a wastrel, an irresponsible adult. He highlights the importance of education and upbringing – I really liked the social message of this movie.
