Bhai battoor bhai battoor ab jaayenge kitni door

Today (23 august) is the birthday of Saira Bano. Saira Bano made her debut in 1960s and when one thinks about it, her career was mainly confined to the decade of 1960s, with a few sporadic appearances in 1970s.
Her career was at its zenith in the mid 1960s. Movies like “Shagird”(1967) and “”Padosan” (1968) were big hits of their time. Music, which was the major reason for the success of these movies remain popular to this day.
“Padosan”” (1968) was a memorable movie on many counts. This movie had Mehmood as a South Indian music teacher of Saira Bano, and Kishore Kumar as Sunil Dutt’s “playback”” singer. The tiffs of Saira Bano and Sunil Dutt, assisted/fuelled by Mehmood on the one hand and Kishore Kumar, Keshto Mukherjee and two others (whom I am unable to name) amused movie goers no end.
And it was with this movie that Kishore Kumar earned his breakthrough as a playback singer. The song “Mere Saamne waali khidki mein” worked like a magic charm and Kishore Kumar found himself becoming the number one male playback singer of Hindi movies, a position that he held for the next two decades till his death.
On the occasion of Saira Bano’s birthday today, here is a song from “Padosan”(1968). This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Saira Bano. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
This song is literally a bathroom song in the sense that Saira Bano lip syncs this song in the bathtup while Sunil Dutt enjoys this bathroom singing from outside.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

There was a Tamil movie ” Aduththa Veettu Penn” ( meaning The Girl next door) starring TR Ramachandran, Anjali Devi and Thangavelu. I am not sure this was the fore runner of both the Bengali and Hindi versions. However Padosan was not welcomed in Tamil Nadu because of caricaturing of Mehmood

I adore Saira. She was not a great actress, but she was EVERY INCH a star, with nakhra and naaz and glamour that you expect a FILMSTAR to have.
She was also lucky to be in some really fun flicks.

Saira is a granddaughter to one of the most accomplished classical vocalists of her time, daughter to one of the most ravishingly beautiful actresses ever, and wife to the greatest actor our time, herself she was top heroine of 60’s-70’s and later producer…
She is a blessed lady…so have a blissful of b’day to lovely lady sairaji.

Hello Atul
As a long-time lurker on this blog, I’d first like to thank you for this amazing site! I have learned so much about Hindi film music and heard so many great songs (while still only scratching the surface) on this site. I hope you and all your contributers keep your enthusiasm for this incredible work for a long time.
I also wanted to ask whether you knew this song, sung by Asha Bhosle and Usha Khanna (I feel a bit daft asking if you know a song, but there are a lot of them), as it is my most recent favourite song and I would be thrilled to see the lyrics appear on this site at some point in the future. Here’s the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fEKy5OptTg
Thank you again for the wonderful site.
