Sometimes I find it hard to remember when I saw a particular movie. Was I in college or in school? A quick look at the year in which the movie released is the best way to find out.
In 1973 I was definitely in school. A movie as enjoyable as Yaadon ki baraat created a buzz, with my classmates discussing scenes from this film and singing its songs.
I was crazy about Zeenat Aman and loved her completely in this film, even though she was paired opposite Vijay Arora. Of course, it is later that we went ‘ugh’ when we saw him on TV serials, but in those days, with movies like Yadoon Ki Baraat, Phagun and Ek Mutthi Asmaan, he was quite likeable to us.
Even though the movie was a multi-starer with Dharamendra (loner), Vijay Arora (with Zeenat), Tariq (with Neetu), the lead romantic pair was surely Vijay and Zeenat.
This song is a simply beautiful composition by RD Burman, set to amazingly beautiful lyrics by Majrooh, and sung with almost whispery longing by Asha and assisted most ably by Rafi.
This is a perennial valentine favorite and will remain so for many years to come.
It is Asha Bhonsleji’s birthday today. It is hard to describe her contribution to film music. It is indeed impossible to imagine what it would have been like without her. Her sensuous, rich voice has given us countless songs, and woe betide the person who tries to choose a favorite few.
Yet, I dare to choose this song as my favorite because I have loved it ever since I was a young girl. It is also a favorite of my daughter who was equally captivated by both the song and Zeenat!

Prakashchandraji, I have seen the third stanza too, on this video titled `Yeh Hai Zeenat,’ but am drawing a blank as far as the lyrics are concerned. And there is a remix version with a third stanza, the name of the artiste eludes me, but the lyrics are not of the same standard as the preceding ones, so obviously, those were made up.
I can only hope one day some kind soul will share a link which has that missing stanza.

Atul-ji, you were in school in 1973?! Hey Ram! I feel like I’m some sort of a T rex! I was working as a Medical Representative in 1973! Anyway, back to this song….. R D Burman very cleverly…ehem….lifted this tune from the title song of a Hollywood comedy called ‘If It’s Tuesday This Must Be Belgium’. At least the first two lines! But ‘Chura liya…’ will always remain my favourite song from ‘Yaadon ki Baraat’! Because of ‘Zeenie Baby’ perhaps…….

Yes , I was in school too at that time but I was not lucky enough to be taken to the movie hall to watch this movie.

Nice one, Ava. And a bold step to name ONE Asha favorite. I wouldn’t be able to do that – just too many Asha songs that would be contending with each other.
I like this song also – it was VERY popular. I heard it a zillion times in those days. Zeenat’s pic with that guitar became iconic. The movie was a massive hit too. I think it was competing at that time for public attention with Bobby.

According to Box office results,during the decade of 1970 to 1979,the First five films were-
Sholey-75
Bobby-73
Mukaddar ka sikandar-74
Roti kapda aur Makan-74 and
Amar Akbar Antony-77.
Yadon ki barat 73 was a distant 29th film.
However for the year 1973 the first 5 films were-
Bobby
Jugnu
Daag
Zanjeer and
Yaadon ki Barat. It was declared a Hit picture,however.

Ashaji and Lataji both had phenomenal talent, during early cinema days it was lacking in the female playback singers. So with their talents + they were @ right time and right place.
But now they are icons and national treasures.
I knew Lataji from Baiiju Bawara…(1952)…But for Ashaji…it was the song from film Ragini (1958)…”Mein Bengali Chokara”..the way she sing that song, in it her voice so heart throbing to listeners…I remember…people was dancing in street near paanwallas shop when they played in Binaca geetmala…for so many weeks.
I remember we used to put our radio @ loudest during that duet 🙂

Originally, I believe this song had 3 stanzas – two by Ashaji and on by Rafi saab.

I remember we had seen it Mumbai Doordarshan’s “Aarohi”. But I don’t think it was ever used in the movie

I don`t know exactly but I have (very faint memory of listening)heard another extra 3rd stanza starting
“akele mere armaan tadap tadap ke kyon rote….meri bhi haalat.wo hoti..jo tumhaari…?????something something.”
I have heard this stanza through a casstte recording of Asha Bhonsle ji`s concert at some foreign nation.
Am I right, someone who know this stanza please Help.
Or is it my “Wahen” or “Fertile imagination” 🙂
