Ye raat bahut rangeen sahi

Posted on: October 1, 2012

“Shagoon” or “Shagun” (1964) was a Shaheen Art production. It was directed by Nazar. The movie had Kamaljeet, Waheeda Rehman, Neena, Achla Sachdev, Libi Rana, Nazir Hussain, Nana Palsikar, Pratima Devi, Rajdeep, Chand Usmani etc in it.

As many as seven songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the eighth and final song from the movie. This song is sung by Rafi. It is a stage song which is picturised on Kamaljeet. It is a hard hitting song which protests against the fact that money is freely available for misdeeds but education of kids is required to be funded through public “khairaat” (alms). The video version is hard hitting, but the audio version of the song is far more hard hitting and the movie makers perhaps thought it better to include a rather toned down version of the song in the movie.

It comes as no surprise that the lyrics are written by Sahir Ludhianvi. He was known to raise such inconvenient questions through his lyrics.

Khayyam is the music director.

With this song, all the songs of “Shagoon” (1964) have now been covered in the blog.

ye raat bahut rangeen sahi ee
ye raat bahut rangeen sahi
is raat mein gham ka zehar bhi hai
naghmon ki khanak mein doobi huyee
fariyaad o ?? ki lehar bhi hai
ye raat bahut rangeen sahi

tum raks karo main sher padhoon
matlab to hai kuchh khairaat miley
is kaum ke bachchon ki khaatir
kuchh sikkon ki saugaat miley
lekin is bheekh ki daulat se
kitne bachche padh sakte hain
ilm aur adab ki manzil ke
kitne zeene chadh sakte hain
ye raat bahut rangeen sahi
is raat mein gham ka zehar bhi hai
ye raat bahut rangeen sahi

daulat ki kami aisi to nahin
phir bhi gurbat ka raaz hai kyun
sikke to karodon dhal dhal kar
taksaal se baahar aate hain
kin gaaron mein kho jaate hain
kin pardon mein chhup jaate hain
ye raat bahut rangeen sahi
is raat mein gham ka zehar bhi hai
naghmon ki khanak mein doobi huyee
fariyaadon ?? ki lehar bhi hai
ye raat bahut rangeen sahi

ye zulm nahin
paise se to kaale dhandhe hon
aur mulk ki waaris naslon ki
taaleem ki khaatir chande hon
ab kaam nahin chal sakne ka
reham aur khairaat ke naare se
is desh ke bachche anpadh hain
daulat ke galat bantwaare se
badle ye nizaam e zardaari
badle ye nizaam e zardaari
keh do ye siyaasatdaanon se
ye masla hal hone ka nahin
kaaghaz pe chhape ailaaon se

The star cast mentions a Libi Rana. She was better known as Nivedita. The lovely song “Tum apna ranj-o-gam, apni pareshani mujhe de do…” is sung by Jagjit Kaur and lip synced by Nivedita in this movie. She had a small yet crucial role in ‘Dhundh’……

These are the missing words :
kin ” ghaaron ” mein kho jaate hain
kin pardon mein chhup jaate hain
ye zulm nahin ” to phir kyaa hai ”

ye ” masa’ala ” hal hone ka nahin
kaaghaz pe chhape ailaaon se

naghmon ki khanak mein doobi huyee
fariyaad o ‘ phuha ‘ ki lehar bhi hai

‘ghaaron ‘ – caves

masa’ala – problem , issue puzzle

‘phuaa or phuha ‘ – Here it means ‘ satirical laughter’ or ‘ ironical fun ‘

it doesn’t mean Phuha it’s a farsi word

fughan meaning Distress or pain

faryad o fughan meaning cry out with pain and distress the G is silent in Fughaan not phuha or phoaa
