Mere baapu se ye kehna

Posted on: October 2, 2012

Today (2 october) is the 143rd birthday anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 october 1969 – 30 january 1948), popularly knows as Mahatma Gandhi, Bapu, or just Gandhi (especially in Western media).

Mahatma Gandhi had a huge following among public and leaders. Mahatma Gandhi died within a few months of Indian independence. It was soon noticed by public that the leaders who were professing to follow in thefootsteps of Mahatma Gandhi were taking the public for a ride. This frustration was manifested in various forms.

It was noticed that the Hindi movie songs on Gandhi were more upbeat but songs on Gandhi from 1960s onwards began to express the disillusionment of the public as far as the activities of the so called followers of Gandhi were concerned.

Here is one such song from “Matlabi Duniya” (1961). This movie was a Chetana Production movie. It was directed by Radhakant M Thakore. The movie had Damuanna, Anant Kumar, Asha, Satish Vyas, Dhumal etc in it. Most names in the movie do not ring any bells.

The musical team of this movie was just as obscure as the movie itself. There were as many as four music directors in this song.

Here is this song from “Matlabi Duniya” (1961) which complains to Baapu that the nation that Baabu left behind has forgotten his teachings.

Talat Mehmood is the singer. Ramesh Gupta is the lyricist and music is composed by Sushant Bannerji.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Mere Baapu se ye kehna (Matlabi Duniya)(1961) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Ramesh Gupta, MD-Sushant Bannerji

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

mere baapu se ye kehna
tumhaara desh rota hai
tumhaari kalpnaaon ka yaha per khoon hota hain
mere baapu se ye kehna

watan ki tumne phulwari
ko seenchha khoon se apne
tumhaari kalpnaaon ke
adhoore hain abhi sapne
adhoore hain abhi sapne
tumhaare kalp satt yug ka
nahi aabhaas hota hai
mere baapu se ye kehna

ye abb insaan ki badli
wahi irshaad barbaadi
sisak kar ro rahi dekho
ahinsa aur aazaadi
ahinsa aur aazaadi
a-niti aapki hai
desh ka aadarsh rota hai
mere baapu se ye kehna

pehankar wastra khaadi ke
bane bahuroopiye neta
ahimsa na-neeti ka
yahaan har aasra leta
yahaan har aasra leta
tumhaare naam ka baapu
yahaan vyapaar hota hain
mere baapu se ye kehna
tumhaara desh rota hain
