Chhod aakaash ko sitaare zameen par aaye

Posted on: October 9, 2012

When one looks at the yearwise list of songs in this blog. One finds that the oldest songs that we have in this blog are from 1933. Though Hindi talkies began to be produced in 1931 itself but the records of songs of these movies were not produced. It was only in 1932 that the idea of issuing gramophone records for songs was thought about. But as happens with most new ideas, the potential behind this concept was not immediately realised and only a few movie makers opted to have records of songs of their movies issued.

One of the early pioneers movie maker in the field of Hindi as well as Indian movies was Prabhat Talkies of V Shantaram. Prabhat Talkies became one of the earliest to adopt this newer technology and they issued recordings of their pathbreaking movie called “Maaya Macchindra” (1932). The movie “Maaya Machhindra” (1932) itself was quite a sensation during its time as it employed then unheard of innovative special effects etc that had the movie goers enthralled.

This movie had Govindrao Tembe, Durga Khote, Master Vinayak, Baburao Pendharkar, Leela Chandragiri, Nimbalkar, Hirabai etc in it.

Today (9 october) is the death anniversary of Govindrao Tembe (June 5, 1881-October 9, 1955) who had played the title role of Machhindranath in this movie. Govindrao Tembe was not just the hero of this movie, he was also the music director of this movie. Since those were the pre playback singing days, so he had sung in this movie for himself as well.

On the occasion of Govindrao Tembe’s death anniversary, here is one of the oldest Hindi movie songs of this blog ever. With this song, now we inch closer to the beginning of Hindi movies. Hindi movies began to be produced in 1931 and records of Hindi movies began to be produced in 1932. This song is from 1932.

This song is sung by Govindrao Tembe and composeed by him. The lyricist of this song is known simply as Kumar. No other details are known about him. This song is a gramophone recording. Those days the gramophone recordings and picturised recording were done separately. The picturisation of this song was obviously done separately and it was picturised on Govindrao Tembe himself.

Here is this song which is in surprisingly well preserved state. Govindrao Tembe sings this song wonderfully well. He was a largely self taught musician and an accomplished harmonium player. He in fact was the music director of the first few movies of Prabhat Films, including “Ayodhya Ka Raja” (1932). The Marathi version of this movie namely “Ayodhyache Raja” (1932) was the first Marathi talkie, with music by Govindrao Tembe.

Here is this superbly sung song from “Maya Machindra” (1932), which becomes the oldest Hindi movie song in this blog.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath.

Atul ji,
Thanks to you and Kamath ji for posting a song of a 1932 movie.
Today is the death Anniversary of Govindrao Tembe, the MD of this film.Let us find out something more about this man.
Govindrao Tembe was born on 5-6-1881 in Kolhapur, which was a bastion os arts and culture in those days. From the childhood tembe became an expert singer and Harmonium player, both these arts came handy when he entered the Film industry. Before films,Tembe-who had passed the basic exam as a Pleader(less than a lawyer) worked as a Clerk,Pleader and also as a Circus Manager !
Tembe then joined a Natak Mandali and learnt music from Bhaskar buwa Bakhale and Alladiya Khan.He worked in Balgandharva Natak Mandali and afterwards formed his own Mandali-Shivraj natak Mandali, which came to a nought soon and he joined Prabhat Film Co.In Prabhat,he was a writer, composer,Actor and Dramatist too.
His music was highly influenced by the Marathi Natya Sangeet. He gave superb music in Prabhat’s film AYODHYA KA RAJA-1932(Ayodhyecha Raja in Marathi),Jalati Nishani-1932 and Maaya Machhindra.-1932.In all these filmshe acted too. Then he went to Calcutta and did a film ‘SEETA’,along with Prithwiraj Kapoor and also sang few songs.
He gave music to all the above 4 films and also to Sairandhri,,Usha,Raj mukut,Aseer e havas,Vishvaman,Pratibha,Saathi, vasanti,Nandkumar etc.
The problem with him was that he could never make a difference between Natya Sangeet and Film music,so he was relegated soon.He wrote many Marathi dramas and gave music.
He died In Delhi, due to a Heart attack.

Arunji,
Was Govindrao Tembe trained under V.D.Paluskar? (Father of D.V.Paluskar) This song and his style reminds me of DVP and his bhajans, Paayoji maine….Chalo mana Ganga Jamuna teer…Raghupati Raghav Raja Raam…Jab Jaankinaath Sahaay kare….

Atul ji,
MAAYA MACHHINDER -1932 is a Prabhat Film Co. Poona movie.
This was their 3rd Talkie film after AYODHYA KA RAJA-32(Ayodhyecha Raja in Marathi), and JALTI NISHANI.
This film was based on the story from the NAVNATH POTHI (Book).V.Shantaram had visited Germany and learnt new techniques of Cinematography. He made full use of that knowledge as it was the first film after his return. The cinematographer of MM was Keshavrao Dhaiber, another founder and owner of Prabhat co.
Machhindranath is the First among the NAVNATHs or the 9 incarnations of Narayana to help Lord Narayana(Vishnu) for smoother running of this world. The 9 incarnations or the Navnaths were-
Machhindranath,Gorakhnath,Jalandernath,Kanifnath,Gahaninath,Bhartharinath,Revannath,Charpatinath and Naagnath.
The mention of NATH SAMPRADAYA is available in Bhagwat puran,Mahabharat and some Upnishads too.It combined Bhakti,Gyan and Yoga.Only the Yoga part was understood by the common people and all the Naths were revered as great Yogis with special powers.
Govindrao Tembe had given 17 songs in this film,in the practice in those days.
The story of MAAYA MACHHINDER was that Saraswati a rich woman without issues goes to M.Nath(played by Govind rao Tembe) and begs for his blessings. He gives her BHASMA(Magic Powder). Not happy with this ,the lady keeps the Bhasma in an empty dust Bin.In due course a child is born in the dust bin.It is named as GORAKHNATH (born from Raksha-Bhasma-Powder) played by master Vinayak. After 12 years M.Nath comes there with a loud call” Chalo Gorakh,Machhinder Aaya “.he takes him away as his disciple and teaches him bhakti. The time comes to give him the Gyan.M.Nath tells him that hewill go to the STREE RAJYA (Women’s Kingdom) ot Tilottama(Durga Khote) to convert her.But once he goes there,he is swayed by her beauty and marries her forgetting his vows of celibacy. When Gorakhnath learns about this he decided to bring his Guru back.he secures entry into the kingdom thru a dancer-Kalinga.Instead i=of meeting Guru directly he waits till the celebrations of VASANTOTSAV begins. Then Gorakh changes himself as a woman and with kalinga-the dancer goes to the Darbar. While she dances Gorakhnath plays the Mridung in such a way that the call of
“CHALO MACHHINDER GORAKH AAYA” is produced loudly.M.Nath hears it and suddenly comes to his senses.
When both try to leave,Tilottama captures them and beheads Gorakhnath. His head tumbles down far off.(This scene was terrific). After this Machhindernath restores his head-it comes flying and sits on his shoulders.(all the audience in the theatre would clap and whistle loudly in joy). Then he explains to Gorakhnath that nothing is real and all this is his Maaya jaal to teach Gorakhnath the Gyan of the truth………
The trick scenes of this films were superb and people must have seen the film several times in 1932.I saw this film almost 20 years later but I remember I was thrilled to see the scenes.
After this film the dialogue of CHALO MACHHINDER GORAKH AAYA became very popular and used by people for fun.

I think I saw this film in late forties. There was a character Gorakhnath in it-I vaguely remember.
