Today (13 october) is the birth anniverasry of Ashok Kumar as well as the death anniversary of Kishore Kumar. After Kishore Kumar’s death on this day 25 years ago, Ashok Kumar stopped celebrating his birthday, naturally. The two brothers, alongwith their third brother Anup Kumar were quite close to each other and we were privileged to see the three brothers together in all the movies that were produced by Kishore Kumar.
“Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958) was a Kishore Kumar production, but it is said that Kishore Kumar, believing that this movie was going to flop gave all the rights of this movie to his secretary Anoop Sharma who is officially the producer of this movie. It is another matter that the movie ended up as being a big box office success, easily the biggest commercial success of Kishore Kumar’s career as a producer. I have no idea if he had entered into any understanding with Anoop Sharma about how to share the profits of this movie. The fact that Anoop Sharma continued to be his secretary means that some amicable undestanding may have been struck up between them. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.
On the occasion of the anniversaries of the two brothers, here is a song from “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958). This song is in fact the first song of the movie which gets played after the movie credits have stopped rolling in. So this movie narrowly escaped qualifying to be described as a movie opening song.
The picturisation shows the three brothers, joint owners of an automobile service centre, trying to start their family heritage car in an open ground in Bombay. The car, a jalopy of 1928 , finally gets started after the three brothers give it a resounding kick on its rear. That kick must have stung the car, because it roars to life and starts moving ahead, leaving the three brothers behind in its wake. No problem. the three brothers easily outrun the car and board it. And it is then that this much loved song “babu samjho ishaare” commences. Yes, this song is a car song, and it is a song that is picturised on the roads of Bombay of 1958. Watching the picturisation takes us to a nice trip down memory lane and we can watch some of the well known landmarks of Bombay as they looked 55 years ago.
This song is sung by Kishore Kumar (for himself), Manna Dey (for Anup Kumar) and Ashok Kumar (we guess) for himself. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.
I am surprised myself that this song has not yet figured in the blog. But that is indeed the case. Six songs from this movie have been discussed in the blog in the past. I have no idea how many more songs from this movie still remain to be discussed.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Atulji,
Wonderful post! As I have mentioned earlier, sending lyrics to you is an easy job for me, but getting all the info about the movie and actors needs patience and passion, which you express everyday through your posts. Thanks for the KK’s correct yodeling part which I could not write. Now my kids can sing the entire song 🙂 . For me, writing the sargam part in a classical song is easy than KK’s yodeling 😆 Thanks again.

This song always take back to me on Binaca geetmala days.
Very famous during those days.
We know;;;that…
KIshore Kumar sang “Koi humdaum” a yesteryears song of dadamoni.
than again “ek chatur naar” song was done by Ashok Kumar in film Jhoola (1941, than…again KK sing for Padosaan (1968)

Atul ji,
Out of the 8 songs of this film, you had discussed 6 songs already(and NOT 5).Today’s song is the 7th.
Now only 1 song remains-
Hum tumhare hai ghar se nikal kar dekho-Asha+Sudha malhotra.
