Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Tum bhi wohi ho main bhi wohi hoon

Posted on: October 16, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I am aware of the film ‘Siskiyaan’ which was released in 2005 but did not know that a film with the same name was made some time in early 50s until I stumbled upon a beautiful song ‘tum bhi wohi ho main bhi wohi hoon’ on YT a few days back. I liked the song so much that I at once sat down to decipher the lyrics for posting on the blog. But on a second thought, I got a doubt about the singer of this song which the YT uploader has credited to Kishori Amonkar. As far as I know from the various sources of the websites, Kishori Amonkar’s first Hindi film song as a playback singer was “geet gaayaa pathharon ne” in 1964. Mogubai Kurdikar did not like her daughter to venture into playback singing career. As a result, Kishori Amonkar did not sing for any films until Drishti (1990) for which she was also the music director.

The film Siskiyaan (1950 or 1952?) is not listed on IMD nor I could get details about this film elsewhere except that as per the uploader of the audio clip, the song was written by Majid Merathi, an unknown name for me and set to music by Raajan- K S Raagi. In myswar.com, the year 1952 has been shown in bracket after the film’s name. Also, this song has been accredited to Kishori Amonkar as a playback singer and for one more duet song from this film. I am clueless as to whether Kishori Amonkar who may have known as Kishori or Kishori Kurdikar did playback singing in her teens. By the way, the name Kishori is common in Maharashtra.

So the questions are: is this song really sung by Kishori Amonkar? If not then who is the singer of this song? Was this film really released? I request the knowledgeable readers of this blog to throw some light on these points.

Irrespective of whether or not the singer is Kishori Amonkar, this song is beautifully rendered by the singer with emotion and poignancy. Those who are familiar with Marathi sugam sangeet (light classical music) would get an impression that the start up and interlude orchestras of this song bear the resemblance of the kind of orchestration the music director Vasant Prabhu did in his filmy and non-filmy song compositions in the 50s.

PS- Our ever reliable in house encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh once again has all the information about this movie. Here is what he has to say on this movie:

SISKIYAN was an unreleased film of the 50s. Its 4 songs were recorded in 1952, but even the film was left half completed and not presented to the censors. It was a K.R.Films presentation with all newcomers like Shri Ram, Naaz Merathi, Madhuraj, Majid Merathi etc.

The music was by Rajan-Ragi pair, for whom this was the only film in their career.
In the period 50-59,there were many small, one time composers like Vinod Kumar, Gaur Goswami, Sauren Pal, Aziz Diwane, Arjun Hingorani, Gopal Rao, Umapati Seal, Zed Sharman, Jagannath, Kundanlal, Nachiketa Ghosh, Ramnath, Gajanan ,S.L.Merchant, Sriram, Malay Chakrawarty, Harilal Thakur, Devraj, Devichand, H Vijay, Suleman Dafrani, S.Kulkarni, Haridarshan, Dagar, Jugal Banerjee, Chandrakant and many more.

Kishori in this song was Raagi’s wife.

Kishori Amonkar’s first film song was in Geet gaya Patharon ne-64

Arunji,
Kishori Amonkar ne Hindi cinema mein koi doosre gaane gaaye hai? The only song that I am aware of is just the one you have mentioned, Geet gaya pathharon ne.

Interesting! Never knew about this movie by Govind Nihalani. Another interesting fact is that Kishori Amonkar is the MD of this movie. Megha jhar jhar barsat re is excellent. Don’t know about the Raagas, but sounds like Malhaar. My husband loves her voice (along with Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande) and has few cds of her. His fav are Mahaaro pranam baanke bihaari ji…..& Sahela re……..
Thanks Arunji for this introduction.

This song reminds me of Anmol Ratan 1950 song by Lata (MD Vinod)
“Taare Wohi Hai, Chand Wohi Hai, Haaye Magar Woh Baat Nahin”

One of the rarest numbers, available only here. The words in the beginning remind me of the song from “Anmol Ratan”

Missing word with correct stanza-
chaand sitare
kar ke ishaare
mujhko na do tum
jo de dilase (consolation, comfort)

Sixth line, last stanza sounds like “tumhaari” haar nahin as she says in the second line-
jeet huyi hai baalam tihaari

Sadanandji has said it right-
Irrespective of whether or not the singer is Kishori Amonkar, this song is beautifully rendered by the singer with emotion and poignancy.
Thanks for the melody.

I think the missing words are – ‘jhoothe dilase ‘ [False consolations ].
