Ahankaar kar ke

Posted on: October 23, 2012

“Madhuri” (1932), which was released just one year after “Alam Ara” (1931), the first Hindi movie ever, has the distinction of becoming the first movie to release records of its songs.

One song from “Madhuri” (1932) has been discussed in the blog, alongwith an extremely informative writeup by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our own inhouse encyclopaedia, accompanied by the lyrics and its translation by Sudhir jee.

Link for another song from “Madhuri” (1932) was also provided by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh with his writeup. This song “Ahankaar kar ke” is sung by Vinayakrao Patwardhan, like the song already discussed. Music is composed by Pransukhlal Nayak. Lyricist is not known.

It can be seen that the singer was a classical singer and he had to adapt his singing to the new way of singing, viz singing for a movie. For someone used to singing for long durations and suddenly asked to finish off within three minutes must have been quite a challenge. It must have been like a Test cricket batsman asked to bat in a limited overs game. We know how an Indian batting great performed during the first World cup match that India ever played. 🙂

It must be said that the singer Vinayakrao Patwardhan did a heroic job. The earlier song, discussed earlier was lovely to listen to. Now that I have been by and large able to decipher the lyrics of “ahankaar kar ke”, I have begun to admire this song as well.

Here is this fantastic semi classical song from “Madhuri” (1932), which, as mentioned was the first occasion for a Hindi movie song to be released on records. I do not how how the records of this movie fared, but it must be said with the benefit of hindsight that it was a great technological as well as artistic achievement for Hindi movies that led to the great tradition of Hindi movie recordings and its spinoffs.

I have been uable to get one line of this song (may be more) and I request our readers with keener ears to point out the missing/ incorrect words.

I believe it was a 60 overs match. India made some 130 runs losing only 2 wickets while chasing some 300 runs. Gavaskar opened and remained not out at 36* 🙂 Later on, he said, he did his best to get out, but couldnt!

England scored 334/4. India replied with 132/3 in 60 overs. I followed the match on radio.
