Plagiarism, or what is euphemistically called “taking inspiration” is nothing new for hindi movies. We have instances of movies which have been lifted frame by frame from movies from some other countries, and that too without acknowleding the fact. And in case people come to know about such acts, the makers of the plagiarised movie are often quite defiant about it and refuse to acknowledge the fact.
On most occasions, nothing happens and people forget all about it.
But there has been one case, where plagiarism was tken seriously by the aggrieved party, who took legal action. The court found merit in the case and it took an unusually stringent step. It destroyed that all the copies of the plagiarised movie by destroyed. The makers of the plagiarised movie apparently did not go to the higher courts and all the copies of the movies were destroyed.
The Hindi movie which was thus banned and its copied destoyed was “Begunaah” (1957). The movie was a Rupkamal Chitra Production. It was directed by Narendra Suri. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Shakila, Krishnakant, Helen, Raja Nene, Radha Krishan, Samson, Mubarak etc in it.
Fortunately the records of this song were not destroyed and they survived.
One song from this movie has been discussed in the past. Here is another song from this movie. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and seeing that Kishore Kumar acted in it, it is clear that the song was picturised on him as well.
Shailendra was the lyricist. Music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
The song is fantastic to listen to. I have a feeling that the picturisation too may have been great. We should at least feel fortunate that this song has survived. In any case, the original movie may not be having songs in it.

I read somewhere that Begunaah (1957) was copy of the Danny Kaye – Mai Zetterling starer Knock on Wood (1954).

The film BEGUNAH-1957 was banned only after it was released and ran for about a month.Like mr.Nayan Yagnik ji,I have also seen this film as I was a fan of Kishore Kumar films and have not missed any of his film in those days.
As far as I know the film was banned so no VDO clips are available.There awere 6 very good songs in it.The best song was mukesh number-Aye pyase dil bejuban,tujh ko le jaun kahan’
One of these days I will write about this film story.

I am another fortunate one to have seen the movie.I remember this song sequence vividly. As a young school going one, it was a sheer joy to watch Kishore Kumar’s antics.
Nayan Yajnik Ji..’Din albele ‘ was there in the movie. Sung on a beach 🙂

Interesting article. I have no idea about the movie Begunaah, but I have watched the movie “Knock On Wood” starring Danny Kaye, If I am not mistaken, Danny Kaye is a ventriloquist in the movie right?

I am a Telugu person, interested in Hindi film music since my childhood. I saw BEGUNAH two times when I was in school. once on 23-09-1957 in a small town AMALAPURAM in A.P. and again on 05-07-1960 at the same place. I am writing diaries since 1957 so I could tell this. I think the A.P. distributors must have kept the prints of BEGUNAH without destroying. It was one of my most favourite films. I love all those songs.

It is very interesting to know that you saw this movie in 1960. It means that prints of this movie was in existence till then. I wonder if they still survive now.

i think video of one song from the movie was there on youtube many years ago, but i didnt know back then it was such a rare movie or i wud have grabbed it.
from what i have heard, the person who has the print in his possession as of now is asking for king’s ransom.

It is really unfortunate that this film had to face this fate. In world where originality is at a premium, and “adapting ideas” is a the easiest and most used methods to generate “new” and “original” stuff, it is a sorry statement that the judiciary decided not only to ban the film, but to also order its destruction.
Yes, it is rumored that prints of this film are available. I would call it a rumor – it is a fact that the “said” asking price is a king’s ransom, but I also know it for a fact that there are collectors around who would pay the king’s ransom to lay hands on this print. So unless a confirmed transaction is heard of, I am skeptic that someone has this print and is selling it.
The other part of the news is that this film probably exists in the Film Archives in Pune. I have not seen this print first hand in NFAI. But another friend, who has visited the Archives, claims that he has himself seen the print, but not as projected on the big screen.

It is a fact that the prints of Begunah were in existence till 1959-60.I remember the film being shown in the morning shows in early 1960 at Hyderabad.However later there was no trace of this film anywhere.Probably all prints must have been destroyed.
It was a matter of court verdict and I am sure that the Hollywood company who went to the court must have counted the prints and destroyed them,wherever they existed.
I also feel that it is unlikely that NFAI,Pune will have a print,as that will amount to contempt of court and NFAI being a Govt.body,they will not do it.
The possibility of any VDO of any Begunah song being shown anywhere is also remote as in those days this facility was non-existent.
Some people play mischief by creating a morphed version of film songs and host them on You Tube,as a hobby.

‘Begunah’ was a straight copy of Danny Key’s ‘Knock on wood’. I was one of the lucky persons, who had seen & enjoyed this film, when it was released. I was very young at that time, but I still remember the movie! The story of the film, I think, was ‘credited’ to Mr. I. S. Johar!
This was the first song of the film & was picturised on Kishore Kumar, who had a strange disease in the movie (of having hiccups, in front of beautiful ladies!!). The film was enjoyable. I enjoyed it more than the original film, as ‘Begunah’ had some lovely music of SJ. ‘Aaja Raat Beeti Jaye..’, ‘Din albele..’ & of course its climax song ‘Aye pyaase dil bejubaan..’ were very popular. I think ‘Din albele..’ was not in the movie.
